AIDS in South Africa? |
Do you know any one personally that have died from Aids related diseases? I never did and read about the stats in the Newspapers and thought, it really cannot be that bad, because I know no one that have died from that..........but now I must admit I know of 8 people (I personally knew) who died since June 2007: Two of my domestic workers children, her sister, an admin clerk and 2 interpreters at the Dept of Justice and today I heard my best friends domestic worker died this weekend. It seems to me more people are dying now of this disease? |

Yes Lise, I have known quite a few people that have died of AIDS. What I cant understand, is that a lot of people die from it and are directly exposed, to it in SA but here in Europe, especially in this country, its unheard of ,,, very rare cases have aids,,,,, as you known what these hot blooded Greeks are like with sex,. When I tell them that this one and that one has died of aids, they look at me dumbfounded and even though I dont believe for a moment that its just luck. How can these poor domestic workers for example, get it from their husbands in just one or two encounters sexually, and these amour's Latin lovers who sleep with everything that moves, dont get it....,,,,does anyone know why the statistics are so much less in Europe than in South Africa. Why is the disease so rife in SA.... |

We lose at least 2 waged workers a fortnight from our payroll ledger from AIDS (large construction company).
Must be my imagination as Thabo Mbeki has assured us that it is impossible to die due to a "Syndrome".
Perhaps we should encourage Bettroot and Garlic for their site lunches. |

I worked with a lot of people who had Aids in S-Africa. Most of them believed that if they use the African Potato plant it would heal them but it did not help them at all. I used to feel so sorry for the Mothers specially those who contacted Aids through their husbands who worked away from home and slept around. Some of them were so skinny and still working trying to get money together for their little kids preparing for when they die. I once met an old woman she was 75 years old and she wanted to kill her husband because he slept with their maid [ both of them were black] and that is how she got AIDS. I told her it was not worth it. My heart goes out to all those kids who have lost their parents and who have to survive on their own. The worst i have ever seen was when i was driving down the N1 and saw a old black man dragging a homemade coffin behind him and the little kids following him and all of them was crying. It was so sad. The moral of the story is don't sleep around and if you do use Condoms. One of the signs i saw on our way to Groblersdal said 'Don't be a fool, use a condom on your tool'. And that is the honest truth, i wanted to take photo's but their were warning signs all over warning a person not to stop there that you may get hijacked. So take care and help the people who are suffering, it is a terrible way to die.:( |

You must keep in mind, is that you will never find a Death Certificate in South Africa that states a person has died of AIDS, it is an AIDS related illness that will be stated on the certificate e.g. pneumonia or TB etc. This is what scews the statistics, I know for a fact that my domestic worker passed away from AIDS and her Death Certificate did not state the true cause. I feel that we are living under a government that still is in denial and many people are dying as a consequence of this denial.... |

In Germany I have worked as a home nurse for 2 years in Germany nursing people with AIDS. It was one of the best and saddest experiences in my life. Dying of AIDS IS really bad. Even though you can extend the life for a certain time and make being sick bearable, in the end it's horrible. The worst thing was how sad a lot of these people were seeing themselves shitting all over the place, becoming thinner and thinner, not being able to lift a jug of water, needing help with washing and going to the toilet... the list goes on....
A couple of friends of mine are HIV positive and they get along with it very well, some of them are living with for almost 20 years now! Some have died.
And this is in Germany with a great health care system. It must be heaven compared to (South) Africa where one gets kicked out of his village because everyone is too afraid to become infected. There is still so much work to do in this country and people like Mbeki that just choose to ignore the virus really are out of their mind and dangerous.
My partner and I have made contact with a child welfare center here in Cape Town who try to give kids with AIDS some things to be happy about. They go on short trips with them, drive them to school (they're orphans, of course) and make sure they take their medications. They are always in need of helping hands, even it is just a shuttle service twice a week. So I totally agree with Rooikat - it's not too difficult to do something. It's not like they expect you to give up your former life and devote yourself to charity. |

A prominent person said all you needed to do after intercourse was to have a shower. What's the fuss about??? Condoms do not work for us South Africans because they are too small and, after all, it is always better skin on skin. Wat is rape?... Is it not a game that the whole family can play especially with babies.
I am being facetious... tell my gardening assistant who has aids and who has lost most of his family to aids that it does not cause death. We need to pull together to rid our country of this scourge. What irks me is that all of us just sit back and hope the next person does something about it. Where are those brave warriors that we brag about when we need them. Come on guys. This is your country and your people now do it...you can start by treating your women and children with the respect they deserve. |

Hmmm yeah it's a world endemic. |As for Africa, I think poverty is one cause, another is patriarchy culture which marginalized women. Tht's why women are often become a sex expolitation object and sadly the law doesn't support them..... |Development in every aspects of human lives is needed.... |

AIDS is epidemic there. Something like 30% of population has that there in SA. Might even be higher than that.

All I know is that we are being criticised from all parts of the world for not handing out Anti-retroviral drugs freely. (As though they are Smarties)
The problem is that they, very much like antibiotics need to be taken regularly/reliably without fail. It has to be monitored closely lest a new strain evolves and becomes resistant to the Anti-retroviral drug. If TB meets HIV (or any other serious viral infection far more contagious) then the entire world is in serious trouble
We need to work towards changing the attitudes and mind-set of many of our African men. Not enough of them understand or respect the dangers or …only too late! |

It is only through your own experiences that you will experience anywhere near the truth. As somone says it is an offence to put AIDS on a Death Certificate and there have been prosecutions of some prominent Medical Personnel who have e.g Head of the Free State Health Dept and currently Dr Colin Pfaff who has been charged with misconduct by the Natal Health Dept for doing exactly that.
You will never know the true picture about HIV/AIDS in South Africa just as you dont know the true picture about XDR TB in South Africa which is potentially an even bigger killer than AIDS.
Even if they were allowed to put AIDS on the Death Certificate you can be guaranteed the ANC would manipulate the figures downwards just as they do with crime. |

We lost a domestic worker to AIDS as well and it has hit us very hard. We loved the person and it was a sad day. I also have a good friend who is HIV positive (± 8 years) and on can see that his immune system is not what it is supposed to be. Knowing more of the disease, we can help however we ask ourselves for how long. I think we need more AIDS awareness drives in South Africa especially the youths who think they are immune. |

Sex used to be the creator of life now it is its GrimReaper, how things have changed.
AIDS in Africa is pandemic and getting worse, governments are turning a blind eye to the seriousness of the problem and yet more people are getting infected and more people are dying.
In 2001, pharmaceutical companies offered the SA government free antiretroviral medicines for babies and children with aids and wasn't it some high ranking ANC official who made a statement refusing these free drugs for children because it would present the government with an aids orphans problem?
Imagine if PW and the White Government had treated AIDS like the ANC are doing and had made a statement like that, what would the world have said then ?
AIDS in Africa is no longer a problem it is a FACT of critical proportions and it is out of control, but how do you tell that to someone who can buy whore for R 20.oo? |

Swaziland has the highest rate of HIV infection in the world.... close to 1/3 of the population. It stands to reason that S. Africa would also have a high rate of infection. Since there is no "cure" or even a "vaccine" for the virus (actually more than one strain of HIV) people are going to start dying... even with the most current meds that help people HIV positive live longer. |

In 2001 a person asked me the same question. I told him I do not know anybody that died from an Aids related illness.
I am sorry to say that now in 2008 it is different. There are too many.
It is like a plaque that is spreading with an alarming rate too fast.
It is as if people are almost self destructive. They do not want to change their lifes and ways of living. |

No Lise it's bad. The best case scenario is 33% the worst case runts to nearly 70%, 98% of whom are black. AIDS in SA is also higher in whites than it is in Europe although not nearly anywhere as bad as amongst the black population. KwaZulu Natal is one of the worst hit areas, especially rural parts. |

The government figures are always much lower than the actual statistics.
I would imagine that the infection rate is around 45% or higher at this moment, IMECO. |
