I love my language and appreciate every opportunity to speak it, since I live in a foreign country. It's a language that echoes the seas of the Cape, the winds of the Drakensberg and the sounds of the African bush. It is the language of my mother and father and many generations of our family before them. Almost my entire life is written in it. It is the first language I ever heard as a baby and it was the language in which my father spoke his last words to me. It was the tool that taught me to read and write and it was the language in which the chansellor of my university congratulated me in on receiving my masters degree. It was the language in which I asked my first date in standard 4 to go with me to a school tiekie-aand and I hope my future wife will be okay with it being one of the languages I ask her to marry. Being denied the opportunity is to speak it is sometimes painful and I hope my future children (if I'm blessed with any) will speak our beuatiful taal. |

I'm South African. Afrikaans is not my first language, maar ek kan dit praat. I hated the language cos it was forced upon us, Blacks......but I started liking it when it was no longer forced upon me......the most thing I appreciate about Afrikaans speaking people is that they are never judgemental about the language..........they always tell me - "maar jy praat mooi Afrikaans"........for that I made much effort, en ek is nou lief vir die taal..... |

I understand every word, however, have not spoken the language for many years since that is not in my daily vocabulary at my present location.
Whenever I have contact and business dealings with South Africans, I always manage to reference the most forceful expression I know, 'Kak of betaal is die wet van Transvaal'
Amongst others I can speak five languages and can handle several on a survival basis. |

Yes I speak Afrikaans third language and somehow managed to pass it higher-grade in high school. My father only knows two phrases that he tries to use as often as possible "Jammer mar ek kan nie Afrikaans praat nie" and "gaan kak in die millies". He has those phrases pinned down 100% Afrikaans people think he is joking and can really speak Afrikaans. |

Ayiza, did you find it empowering to ridicule other peoples'mother tong? At least, if you dont speak it, you can't rape it, like you do with English. |

Uitstekend |
