Am I still Jewish? |
My great-grandparents (moms side) stopped practicing Judaism in the 1930's, because Hitler was becoming even more powerful overseas and they were worried for my grandma and great uncles future.
My family has only recently found out this information - but for many years I have felt connected to Judaism & I always felt that I really am Jewish.
So even if the past 2 generations have not practiced Judaism, could I still be one? Or would I have to convert to really be Jewish?
Toda - I hope someone can help me! Additional Details We'll..I'm a very very curious person. I love looking up different countries, religions, languages - everything. When I came across Judaism, I was hooked. I was around 10-11 at that time.
My parents weren't religious so I grew up without a religion, I guess you could say. Although, I still had my own beliefs. I live in a very Christian environment and the things my friends would talk about made me uncomfortable, because i didn't really believe that way. I always thought I made up my own beliefs. Some I did, but most related to Judaism.
I'm not sure though if it was just a coincidence or what.. |

Same answer as kismet--you are Jewish if great-grandmother's daughter married your grandfather, and if your grandparent's child was your mother (that is, if your heritage is maternally Jewish). And please feel free to e-mail me if you have other questions as well! |

If your mother's mother was Jewish, you are too and you do not need to convert:)
If you have any more questions, feel free to email me! |

Shalom , If Judaism is based on your mother's side I would think you would still be Jewish. To be sure I would talk to one of your local Rabbi's. They could guide you to the correct areas to find this information. I am glad to see that you still feel connected to your Jewish roots. L'chaim! |

Yep, you sure are a Jew. Welcome back. :)
Can you describe a little bit more, how did you feel Jewish without knowing it? I am just interested in knowing, that's all. If you don't mind.
Edit:
How interesting. Thank you for sharing it , and once again, welcome back :)
You might still want to think twice about getting back to your roots though, cause we are the most hated people on the face of this planet. We are, however, only hated by true scum :))) |

Hi ○MiiXeD BaRbiiE○,
If your mom and grandmother are/were Jewish than you are Jewish too. I guess you just felt it in your heart.
Sincerely,

Start synagogue hopping and find a congregation that suits you. Talk to the rabbis and ask questions -- that's what they're there for. They are teachers.
The sense of community is something you must experience in Judaism. It's not something you will learn from study. Judaism is so different from what you've learned by living in the Christian community, it will take at least a year for you to even begin to understand the differences. It will take more like two or three years before you can begin to see Judaism in its entirety.
Christians chose to follow one rabbi, but Jews still study the writings of sages from throughout the centuries. There is much MORE to Christianity that "believing" you will lead a life of eternal bliss.
You have a wonderful heritage. I sincerely hope you will begin to explore it. I suggest you start with "A History of the Jews" by Paul Johnson.

If your great-grandmother was a Jew, and she gave birth to your grandmother, who then gave birth to your mother, by Jewish law you are a Jew.
If you feel connected to Judaism, excellent! I think you'll find a niche where you will be welcomed with open arms. |

If they were your Grandmother's parents (your mother's mom)
then yes, but if they were your grandfathers parents (mother's dad) and your grandmother wasnt Jewish, then no, you arent a jew. |

Yes, you still can be Jewish. As long as you marry Jewish, live your life Jewish, and raise your kids Jewish, you should be considered Jewish. |

Others have already answered you correctly. IF there is an unbroken maternal line of Jewish women leading to you, then you are Jewish with no need to convert. A pertinent story that I read recently may be of interest to you. http://www.aish.com/spirituality/odysseys/The_Secret_Diary.asp

Yep, as others have said if your mother and grandmother were Jewish you are as well. According to the Jewish faith, even if a Jew renounces religion completely they will still be considered Jewish. Congratulations on your re-discovery of your family's rich past and I wish you the best in your journey through life whatever you choose to do! |

First, being a Jew is not a matter of belief or religion, being a Jew is nationality. Most of Jews do not really practice “judaism” and many are completely atheists, and they are still Jews because they are part of the nation which you may call Hebrew or Israeli or Jewish nation.
Now, as for your question, the answer is in two different routs. Generally a Jew is one that consider himself a Jew, or other consider him Jew, or both. In your case, it depends on your will to be a part of the Jewish nation.
The second rout is the formal registration, which is relevant only if you want to be registered in Israel as Jew. Then you are Jew if your mother is a Jew. For this it does not matter who was your grand grand mother and if your father is a Jew it is not enough. And your mother is a Jew if her mother is Jew (the reason for this –some other time). To prove this you must have papers, or witnesses. For instance, if you have a Jewish name and you witness that your mother has a Jewish name and she has been speaking Yiddish with her parent – some time is enough proof. If you want to be a Jew and even fake testimony – who cares? – and go back to the first route above. |

You would still be considered Jewish--for example, you'd easily get aliyah to Israel even though the past two generations have not been Jewish--however there are certain rituals you'd now have to undertake to "really" be Jewish in a religious sense (not quite the same as a conversion, but still fairly long.) |

I'm sorry I just can't understand the way that you are thinking my child.
Do you think it is "cool" being a jew?
You have been given the blessing of Christianity.
That's a mighty fine gift and you just want to throw this away?
I just don't get it, that's all.
Take good care of yourself and don't get any crazy ideas, OK? |

You are Jewish ONLY if your mother & grandmother also where Jewish. In no way will you be Jewish just because your great-grandparents where , or you " Felt it in your heart " !!
Also , if you do not LOOK jewish or have a jewish name this is a great opportunity for you to totally abandon this defunct religion . Nobody sees the point in it anymore. Please seek some guidence through your priest or Pastor not Jews on Yahoo who you do not know .
Goodluck :) |
