About the six Pillars of Iman from Hadith;

قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الإِيمَانِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلاَئِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَتُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ

He (the inquirer) said: Inform me about Iman (faith). He (the Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah, in His angels, in His Books, in His Prophets, in the Day of Judgment, and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil.

Well now about your question, it was answered in Surat Al Hujurat (Chapter 49) verse 14:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

قَالَتِ الْأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا قُل لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَكِن قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْإِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ وَإِن تُطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَا يَلِتْكُم مِّنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ شَيْئًا إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

صدق الله العظيم

[14] The desert Arabs say, "We believe." Say, "Ye, have no Faith, but ye (only) say, 'We have submitted our wills to Allah, 'for not yet has Faith entered your hearts. But if ye obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not belittle aught of your deeds: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

According to Ibn Katheer those are levels from the general (Islam) to the exclusive (Iman), من الأعم إلى الأخص, they are followed by an even higher degree which is Al Ihssan الإحسان.

I have noted though that you take the issue of divine punishment and reward as black and white issues. As Moslems we know this is not the case, that the concept of punishment and reward is almost tailor made to each person according to his own deeds. Its neither absolute hell nor absolute heaven but rather infinite levels in between or even a combination of both, And that Allah (SWT) in his infinite wisdom is the one who weighs our actions and is the one who accurately allocates our position accordingly.

Isn't this the concept of judgment حساب after all?

So while we understand that just being a Moslem (the 5 pillars of Islam) is the basic requirement to get you to heaven (lets say at entry level), we do know also that aiming towards higher levels of reward requires extra work like being a Mo'men, and for an even higher promotion we need to be Mohsen, etc...

Like in a computer game you can not jump to a higher level without completing the previous one that is you can not achieve the level of Iman without completing the level of Islam and to be a mohsen you need to be a Mo'men first.

This is my own oppinion, I have to stress once more that I'm not an expert in religious matters and that my contribution mustn't be taken as a profesional one, its too big a responsibility. And God knows best. والله أعلم

I really think that as long as a person really believes in one God then it doesn't really matter how many pillars of Islam he follows or which he believes to be the right way. These are decisions made by man and they are only his interpretation of the Holy Qoran.
Man does not have the right to interpret or to change God's word.

edit: Nana 14 You are one of the worst example of a Christian I have come across.It is people like you that are turning people away from Christianity with your "Holier than thou" attitude.

Upon saying the Kalimah with conviction, you become Muslim. That much is true.
Secondly, there are SEVEN Articles of Faith: Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, The Day of Judgment, Qadar, And Questioning after death.
Thirdly, both of these must be embodied by the Muslim. Firstly, the articles of faith because he cannot be fully called a Muslim if he rejects them. This is what is entailed by "conviction." These are esoteric laws; the exoteric laws are the five pillars.
The last part, in reference to the Fire. That part means that no one who is a Muslim will forever stay in Hell. He will be hurt, in penance for his sins, but then released into the Garden.
Mu'mins and Muslims are nearly synonymous. We don't have the right to judge one another's faith, so when you convert, you're a Muslim. Don't make differentiations. A convert is Masum(sinless) until he decides to sin.

From my understanding or rather belief the six pillars of iman are a higher and deeper degree of understanding reserved for the true Momen. The 5 pillars of Islam are for every Muslim.

If i remember correctly (some one feel free to correct) there are approximately 70,000 Muslims that will enter the jannah easier than the rest of the Muslims, in this figure i believe the individuals would be classed as the true momen. So hence its all about how the person will enter heaven and in what way, i.e procedures - which is a whole discussion.

The best reading that i have found on this subject in English have been translations from the Sufi tajanniya tariqa.

The best discussion on this subject that i have heard and from the best example in modern times (And Allah knows best) is from the American Imam Hamza Yusuf Hanson. I think if you didn't already listen to his discussion about the six pillars, it is excellent and i will also try to listen to again, if i can find it on the Internet. If anyone else finds it please let me know.

The five pillars are the standard duty of all Muslims able to complete them, this is true for everyone. Ancient Muslims and Sunnis only have these five. But some sects of Shiite Islam have three or more additional duties, including:
Jihad
Amr-Bil-Ma'rūf
Nahi-Anil-Munkar
