Any travel advice for travelling through the middle east?

after watching ewan mcgregor and charlie boorman do the long way round i'm inspired to do a bike trip, starting at bari in southern italy and travelling on to israel via turkey and syria, then on to egypt, libya and tunisa. then taking the ferry back to sicily from tunis.... anyone been in these countries.. i've only ever seen them on the news..

I travel regularly to the Middle-East for business (saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Libya, etc...). It is correct that you won't be allowed to Libya if the customs see that you've been to Israel....
An advice for your first trip is to avoid Israel (nothing wrong with the country), it's just that some Arab Customs officers will find it offensive...
I personnally have 2 passports to avoid any complications.
Don't listen too much to people who haven't been there, walking in the streets of London is a lot more dangerous than the streets of Riyadh, Tripoli, etc... crime is very low and people are very friendly...

I've been to Italy, Israel, Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Tunisia of the places you mention. Syria isn't really geared for 'sole traveller' tourism so it's the only place I would give a question mark for a trip on a bike. You'd be better off on a guided tour, you'd get more out of it.

If you enter Israel you will probably not get into Libya without another passport

Drink lots of water, bottled is best. You want to stay hydrated both while biking and in those climates.

relax, learna a few polite gestures and phrases, and a genuine warm smile cuts across language barriers

plus stay hydrated- you probably need to take more water than you think

Folin
Dont be drunk on the streets. You can end up in prison

and in some countries you do a minor theft crime you will go into prison or chop fingers off like they do in Saudia Arabia.

Crimes are so low in the middle east

Greetings Tomo. I read your profile and I can see why you want to get away from your "tongue & cheek" job even if you have to peddle away. LOL! By the way, were you also going to Ethiopia? I've never been to any of these places yet, an from the looks of it, you haven't yet gotten the definitive answer you're looking for so far...except keep low...LOL! If, however, underneath all your desire to get away you just want a real vacation, that even your wife will enjoy, and/or a real interesting career, I can help with both. P1D concierge consultants can better answer your specific questions. My only suggestion would be to read up on all these places and see what is the custom for each one so you don't offend anyone and blend in. Going to jail for something you didn't know was disrespectful etc. could ruin your life or take it?
Egypt although beautiful it has a lot of kidnapping and violence in some parts.
It sounds like an exciting adventure...I'm jealous

You and your bike, better be able to "out run" a Scud Missile.
Unless you get the proper permits in "advance." <}:-})

Do it closer to home. It's safer. Or just bike Europe. Safer... and still beautiful.

Well, with a screen name like that you should seriously consider learning how to say in a loud, CONVINCING voice in Arabic:

"There is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his prophet!"

(repeat two more times)

Keep moving and duck down, really really low
