Are you with or against the Death Penalty?

Please justify your answer!

El Guapo
100% Against.

I supported capital punishment for a long time, but the more I learned about it, the more I came to oppose it. In the end, several factors changed my mind:

1. By far the most compelling is this: Sometimes the legal system gets it wrong. In the last 30 years in the U.S., over 100 people have been released from death row because they were exonerated by DNA evidence. These are ALL people who were found guilty “beyond a reasonable doubt.” Unfortunately, DNA evidence is not available in most cases. So, as long as the death penalty is in place, you are pretty much GUARANTEED to occasionally execute an innocent person.

Really, that should be reason enough for most people to oppose it. If you need more, read on:

2. Because of higher pre-trial expenses, longer trials, jury sequestration, expert witnesses, and other extra expenses associated with prosecuting & defending a DP case, plus the appeals process (which is necessary - see reason #1), it costs taxpayers MUCH more to execute prisoners than to imprison them for life.

3. The deterrent effect is questionable at best. Violent crime rates are actually HIGHER in death penalty jurisdictions. This may seem counterintuitive, and there are many theories about why this is (Ted Bundy saw it as a challenge, so he chose Florida – the most active execution state at the time – to carry out his final murder spree). It is probably due, at least in part, to the high cost (see #2), which drains resources from police departments, drug treatment programs, education, and other government services that help prevent crime. Personally, I think it also has to do with the hypocrisy of taking a stand against murder…by killing people. The government fosters a culture of violence by saying, ‘do as I say, not as I do.’

4. There’s also an argument to be made that death is too good for the worst criminals. Let them wake up and go to bed every day of their lives in a prison cell, and think about the freedom they DON’T have, until they rot of old age. When Ted Bundy was finally arrested in 1978, he told the police officer, “I wish you had killed me.” Khalid Shaikh Mohammed (the architect of the 9/11 attacks) would love nothing better than to be put to death. In his words, "I have been looking to be a martyr [for a] long time."

5. Most governments are supposed to be secular, but for those who invoke Christian law in this debate, you can find arguments both for AND against the death penalty in the Bible. The New Testament (starring Jesus) is primarily ANTI-death penalty. For example, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus praises mercy (Matthew 5:7) and rejects “an eye for an eye” (Matthew 5:38-39). James 4:12 says that GOD is the only one who can take a life in the name of justice. In John 8:7, Jesus himself says, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

definitely against since im not GOD
ALLAH gave us life and he only can and will take it

Bélier
I'm against.
Who are we to take that decision? And what if the person is innocent? How many people had that penalty, were killed and later there were proofs that they were innocent?

No, Of course I'm with IF the man who killed confess that he killed in purpose, and that he meant it, so he has to be killed too,

But I think it will better if they gave him time to live and try to be a better person b4 they kill him,

In Islam, if someone for example kill my son, I will kill him, but If he doesn't mean it then it depends on law of course, but If he mean it and he is asking for forgiveness it depends on me, If I will forgive him, then he will not be killed, If I didn't forgive him then he will be killed, but I think here in Egypt we have French law, not Islamic laws, And to be honest French and Islamic laws have things I don't think it's right,

I just want to add something, there are dangerous killers, and if you talked with them forever they will not be convinced, they like to kill, they had many problems in their life, and killing is just a game for them, those guys are dangerous and must be removed from society IF you will not be able to change them to normal people again,

I think Prison is very bad idea, really, I hate prisons, I think it will be much better if they can find better punishment than prison, because in prisons the people are not changed and also they come back worse than before, I think it will be better if the punishment was by making them work for the good of the country, or by helping or building or whatever, not by putting them between 4 walls, and away from people they love,

Anyway, maybe I'm right and maybe I'm wrong, but that's my opinion,

Against, murder is always murder even when committed by the state. Two wrongs do nor make a right.

HopelessZ00
Against it. Too many innocent people sit in jail for 30 years or more on death row. Thank God that DNA testing is now available in some cases and people have been set free.

On the religious issue, If we murder a murderer back we are just the same, a murderer. God is the last judge and will have the last word. Cheers!

divazula
yep. we are not God to give Death penalty to a person.

It's a tough one I would like to say that I am on the against side but there are a few people that the world could do without. I'm against it except for cases of extreme terrorism. Let them suffer in jail I say.

we are not GOD and only GOD can decide when and how a person will die, it should not be up to our hands we had no say in that person's birth and creation so what makes us think we can have a say in their death?

MidnightRyder
Yes i am....why kill someone who killed another human being?....i say keep him alive and well in his cell...let that person feel the pain and shame that he did....if we pull the switch...then his situation is done and over with

Eterηαl
As much as I see capital punishment as a cleansing process, I still cannot agree with man made rules that decide life and death.
To me, it is a two wrongs do not make a right case. There are other alternatives of punishment. Human rights agencies around the world are working on eliminating capital punishment around the world, especially in some US states that still use that type of punishment

Destiny
I'm for it. Anyone who takes an innocent person's life voluntarily doesn't deserve theirs.

against ..

as i don't believe in free well ..i believe in determinism ..we don't exist by ourselves ..the notion of self is illusive we decide an choose nothing ..the settings around us define us completely it doesn't only affect us ..our parents ,the society ,economic status ,genetics ,complex biological an physical laws we don't fully understand ,our dreams an what become of them ,every little detail ..smell ..colour ..smile ..bitter an sweet moment every second of life formulates us ..

to say we're to sentence a man to death with our current state of ignorance regarding what motivates our actions ..

an what does it solve? ..if someone was murdered ..to kill another is the answer??

some would argue ..you won't say the same thing if one of your loved ones was killed ..that's true ..but then my judgment would be based on my emotion that's selfish ..not my critical thinking ..

Jake
for it only in the case of intentional murder where they planned it out and it wasnt like spur of the moment where a guy walks in on a man having sex with his wife so he shoots him. life for a life

ƇЯazii :§eӝii: ₭oo₤
Depends what the crime was && what kind of person they are.

like if some one raped a child ii think they should be castrated or death penalty either one...

&& like "tookie" williams, yea he was a gang member & killed other gang members and whatever, but while he was in prison he realized he phukked up && started doing things for children && stuff...i dont think he shouldve been killed.

against.. its not mans place to decide who lives or dies..

GlobalMan
An eye for an eye?

The way I see it sometimes, murder is murder which ever way you put it.

Its a bit hypocritical don't you think. Besides, death can also be construed as a relief rather than punishment for a great crime. By giving a life sentence to a murderer (without parole), you force the criminal to face his crime and suffer the fate for the rest of his life....seeing his life wasted away...

Isn't that a worst punishment than an instant death?

*Edit: Besides, I believe that it is up to god to judge us at the end

Aussie
I believe that people need to face the consequences for their actions ....if they know that the penalty for their crime could be the death penalty it becomes their choice not society's !

amo
It depends in what crime he did for example if he killed people not by accident sure he deserve the Death Penalty but if he raped specially children the no sorry he doesn’t deserve to be dead , dead is mercy for him I will punish him every day till death by putting a big stick on his @$$ and push it hard then I will remover his sicken like photos cut his fingers1 by 1 and more I wont explain for the hard feelings :)

WITH. Think about it. The US has alot of crimes and the prisons are running out of room and if they have comitted murder and taken someone elses life then.. Why can't we take theirs?

YES. the world is overpopulated. let the ones who won't be missed/ screwed up their lives die.

flackstar
i think the death penatly is nessary is certin stiuations that involve a crim that warents it and a criminal that wont change.

so the first step once the crime has been done would be to access wether there is a chance for reabilitation from a third party so that there be no bias. if found to be unchanging then death by all means.

the problem with keeping an unchanging criminal alive is that it costs money and time, and eventualy as it is now cause overcrowding in the jail system and safty issues for criminals who are also in for time of lesser convictions.

lastly it sends a message to people that certin crimes will really get punished and there for less people commit the crime.

Surely with.
Especially when we are talking about those terrorist caught in 2000 released in 2005, to attack later the army.
If they were executed they would be only bones right now.
I hope the rest of them should be executed too.
