Can Christians and Muslims tell me why......?

We Jews are a proud and ancient people of 4,000 years. For half of that time, (2,000 years) we have been opressed and murdered by Christians and Muslims based upon our religion. For the other 2,000 years (before Christ and Muhammad came about) we were killed not totally for our religion, but because of our real estate, the Land of Israel, which happened to sit at the crossroads of large empires. We were those "pesky Jews" who always got in the way of an empire's expansion. Before the genocides perpetrated against us by Christians and Muslims, we were assaulted by Egyptians, Philistines, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Romans. These people did not really hate us for our religion, but because our land Israel was always a thorn in their empires, an obstacle to total control, and we rebelled because we wanted our independence.

But tell me.....? Why have the followers of Christ and Muhammad striven to destroy us so? Is it simply religious reasons? Does you religion dictate it ?

In all frankness, while it was still not peachy at all, times were still better for the Jews before Christ and Muhammad came about. What do my Jewish compatriots think?

Prior to Christians and Muslims it was mostly about the land as God set apart the Hebrews and guided them to the promised land which was met with opposition by some of the peoples you mentioned.

There would be no Christianity if not for the Hebrews. The early church was made up of Jews and gentiles but as time passed they split and due to the dark ages where the scriptures were in the hands of only a select few IE: the Popes etc... it was their interpetation of the scriptures that gave fuel to pograms agaisnt Jews.

Way back then--the so called Christians (i use the term loosly) blamed the Jews for Christs death and being that the lifestyle of the Jew was considered "different' all added to ignorance that led to terrible things. Because much was denied the Jew--one of the only professions left to them was that of money-lenders and so how better to escape a debt than to defile the people who lent you the money?

Islam showing up much later has their roots of hatred deep in the divide when God chose Issacc over Ishmael. The fight between the Muslims and Jews will never be settled at any peace conference because the world fails to realize the deep religious roots at the core of the problem.

Most of your Christians today support Jews and Israel but I am shamed to say there are still many that adhere to what is called "replacement theology", where some Christians believe God replaced the Jews with them when Christ was rejected. The Bible does not bare this out and the theology is not only wrong but extremely dangerous to the Christians who follow it.

Last but not least--The Hebrews are Gods chosen people and human nature being what it is--a jealous nature turned many wicked and hateful.

What really puzzles me, is that the real refugees of 1948 were the Jews who fled or were chucked out of Arab countries. Nobody ever speaks of this, it seems.

Jasmine, why don't you go and read just a bit about what happened to Jewish people living in Muslim countries before Israel, before 1948. Go on, you will be shocked.

Muslim by Choice

If you are saying we have the 'victim mentality' what do you say about the Muslim demonstrations and protests across the world over a lousy cartoon?

We don't view ourselves as victims. Sadly we have been, but this is not a 'mind set' as you call it, it is history.

Da Man, you are Muslim yet you have just argued in support of Christianity? We did not change or deny anything.

happyjumpyfrog
People are people, what ever their religion. There are good people and bad people. By putting all Christians and all Muslims into a group that want to destroy Jews you are being unfair. Stalin was an atheist and set out to destroy the Jews in Russia. To say the Romans did not hate you for your religion shows a very poor understanding of Roman history, including the desecration of the temple in Jerusalem.

The Syrian Greeks of Hannukah fame were certainly intolerant of the Jewish religion. The famous edicts pronounced by Antiochus Epiphanes against the Jews went directly to the heart of the religion, outlawing such fundamental things as Brit Milah. Furthermore, the straw that broke the camels back was the saccing of the Temple and forced worship to heathen idols. This if anything is the first historical case of religious oppression against the Jews. Also, in biblical accounts, the animosity that the Edomites held for the Jews/Judaens seems to surpass a simple desire for land. It seems by Old Testament accounts to be a baseless burning racial hatred. The Edomites rejoiced when Israel was conquered, even though it was no them who took the lands or the spoils. This suggests that the desire was to harm Jews and not to conquer territory. The ancient large empires (Egypt, Babylon, Assyria) do seem to have been more interested in politics than hate or religious intolerance as you say.
From my understanding of history, while religion very often caused the violence against the Jewish people, it more often was only the excuse to allow for the violence to unleash itself. Mostly, the Jews were used as political scapegoats or sources of easy plunder. Simply put, when people have power they abuse it, and as religion gave Christians and Muslims power over the Jews, they very often abused that power for their own benefit. This includes overt acts like murdering and looting, but also more subtle acts such as economic sanctions and rights denial. I would say that religion allowed for people to act from the depths of their animalistic tendencies, but didn't cause those tendencies themselves.

Most of the wars that have ever been on this earth, most of the cruelty that mankind has caused to each other usually reverts back to one reason. Somebody has something that someone else wants and they try to take it away from them.
The basic reason Hitler persecuted the Jews was to rob them. The Basic reason we were in Vietnam was money, the basic reason we are in Iraq is money. Money is the root of all evil.

Yes, life was definitely better before J*sus and Muhammad.

With them they brought the worst kind of persecution.

the two religions(islam-christianity) high priest's through most of history knew one thing :

judaism in and of itself endanger the existence and authenticity of their own religion.

only if they destroy us(jews) no evidence will stay, for the hugh cover-up they made back then.

the two rligion's are too similar to judaism , as we all know both of them have grow from the same base , the bible.

but they lack something that jews have...
heritage , a real connection to the land, the same land where the bible was written!!!

the pre-christians made the bible more suitable for them , less demanding , more peace and love kind of thing, and to justify their cover-up they actually convince themself that Mary conceive from god and that she actually a virgin.
o.k..... tha's o.k , but even my 5 y' old niece would write better STORY.

the pre-muslims saw how the christians did , and they did the same but only for the other side , they made their quran a super hard virsion with much strict rulz , to the point where people who belive it , will end their life in the name of it, or spend their life trying to convert others.

both of them through most of the history knew that while the jews or judaism is here , they will face the shadow of truth .
so they tryed in every possible way to eliminate us , destroy us and our holy sites, to distort our our belifes and our Holy Scriptures .

only the fact that they persecute us for such along time with such devotion , will bring a hugh question mark on their intention.

peace out i'm going to sleep!!!!

I don't think so Ultra N .
I would not talk about the faith of Jews, Christians or Muslims.
The christian church in the history like to dominate and don't like competition so it attend to try to destroy it's competitors : Jews, Muslims and pagans.
unlike the christian church, Muslims want for others to respect them and leave them alone so, Muslims always good to you unless you offend them. in the history Jews in Muslims land live better than christian land and some of them became minsters and prime minsters to Muslim governors.

the birth of Israel made a lot of change in Muslims-Jewish relationship. according to Muslims holy land is an Islamic land and must be in Muslims hand . to Jewish it is a Jewish land and must be in Jewish hand .so by establish a state of Israel Muslims been offended.

Before Christ didn't the Assyrians and Persians own the land? I was born in '70 so I don't know if it was better or not. Sorry. Cheers!

This is like saying I am guilty of slavery in America when my people were too poor to own slaves, and weren't even part of the confederacy.
I have said before Ultra you don't deserve America. Go to Israel and scream across the wire.
You are one of the worst hate mongers I have met. I have been to a KKK ralley too.
I won't go back as there are too many like you there.

Well, Ultra, I must say that your tone seems to have gone down a notch, so I guess I should congratulate you on that.

The second point I would make is that we all have our own readings of history. I do not claim to be a historian, but my understanding of the history of Muslim/Jewish relations is by no means as bleak as the portrait you describe. Perhaps my sources (both Islamic and secular American) are not the same as yours.

We often seek out the sources of our knowledge from those whom we deem as credible. When a person comes from an ideologically charged starting point, as you seem to do, I would suspect that your sources come from the same ideological leanings.

I do not mean any offense by saying this, but I've noticed that many Jews have this "victim mindset". Once this mindset is established, the world is viewed through its lens. So it's just a thought, but perhaps you are looking at the world and other faith groups through this prism of "everyone is out to get us".

I do not mean to imply that the Jews have never suffered, that there have never been expulsions, murders, and all the rest, but I think the "victim mindset" is a terrible place to live because it doesn't allow for an objective look at the past, present, or future. This mindset colors Israeli politics even today.

My point being, Ultra, your question at the end belies a feeling of victimhood. Looking at history from outside of that context might allow you to see that human beings are generally a bloodthirsty lot. It is not something unique to Christians or Muslims and it is not something specific towards the Jewish people.

People are easily given to division, and when there is division, "otherness" develops. and when that happens the "other" is more easily seen as less than. At that point, his rights and needs are more easily cast aside. Can you say this mentality hasn't overtaken you in relation to your feelings about the Palestinians?

To your last point, I would say this: Do you really think if Islam dictated that the Jews are to be destroyed that they would have found safe haven in the Middle East when they were being expelled from Christian Europe? Do you think that such a small group of people living in relatively small communities throughout the Middle East and surrounded by a vast Muslim majority would have survived for more than 1,400 years if Islam dictates your destruction?

EDIT: Green_Eyes: I agree with you that it IS history, but what I'm getting at is that I detect a presumption that because it IS history it will ALWAYS be the plight of the Jewish people. It's highly understandable given the events of the past, but I'm only concerned that it also shapes the future of the Jewish people in how they relate to the rest of the world, particularly through the policies of the nation of Israel.

As to the "Muslim victimhood", I absolutely agree with you. As Muslims have migrated into non-Muslim countries, a feeling of "they're out to get us" has certainly developed. That has only hightened after the terrorist incidents of the recent past. Perhaps it is inevitable for any minority group to feel this way to a certain extent. For both Jews and Muslims, I think it is generally an unhealthy way to approach the world because it leads to reactions that might not otherwise occur.

The cartoons are an example on the Muslim side and one might argue, much of the terrorism that we see today. On the Jewish side, I would point to the unyielding support for Israel, whether it is right or wrong as an expression of this need to "protect us from them" mentality. In my mind, this allows Jews to accept actions that they normally would not accept or approve of.

A case in point would be the treatment of the people in the occupied territories. I want to be clear that I believe in the right of Israeli civilians to be safe, but I do not believe that Israel has the right to deny a whole group of people their basic human rights in the process. I think part of this willingness to treat the Palestinians in this way stems from the "victim mentality" ultimately because the Jews believe they are protecting themselves from being victims yet again. I am not arguing that Israel has no security needs, but rather that the severity of the means employed are related to its conception of itself as a victimized people.

there has to be another reason why so many civilizations for so many years have hated jews, i dont think its because u were in their way, but because god sent you a true message your the people of israel rejected it and to answer ur question, life was much better for jews before they changed the true message of god and went by their own desire

EU Citizen
if the jews of back then where anything like you i woulda sent them running faster then a n-i-g-g-a on a drug raid.
