Can someone clear up my confusion please?

I was under the impression that Jesus is never mentioned by name in the Old Testament and that though there are references to a messiah, it's clear it is not Jesus.

Why do many Christians insist that Jesus IS mentioned, though? And in such a way that it's 'clear' it's him?

If I've got it all wrong, please do tell me! Thanks for your help.

you are not wrong. jesus is not mentioned at all in the OT. the references to a messiah do not remotely resemble jesus.
in fact, the whole idea of a messiah was changed by christianity (to make it more palatable to pagans whom they were trying to convert.)
the person of the messiah is not all that important. he is just the messenger. the important thing is the period of time, the messianic age. which we are not it, from all the predictions.

christians have to twist and mistranslate to find jesus in the OT, and leave out most of the prophecies concerning the messiah. the part that amuses me is that those are the same christians who prefer a literal reading of the bible. except when it doesn't suit them, of course.

There is not a single mention of Jesus in the old testament seeing as he was born thousands of years after the old testament was written!

JOHN i have studied the old testament extremely well and have never come across the fact that the messiah will be called immanuel, where did you get that fact from?

Xians insist J*sus was mentioned in the Jewish Bible (we do not call it the OT), because it gives their religion more validity.
The TANAKH (Jewish Bible) is full of references concerning the REAL messiah:
* The Sanhedrin will be re-established (Isaiah 1:26)
* Once he is King, leaders of other nations will look to him for guidance. (Isaiah 2:4)
* The whole world will worship the One God of Israel (Isaiah 2:17)
* He will be descended from King David (Isaiah 11:1) via Solomon (1 Chron. 22:8-10)
* The Moshiach will be a man of this world, an observant Jew with "fear of God" (Isaiah 11:2)
* Evil and tyranny will not be able to stand before his leadership (Isaiah 11:4)
* Knowledge of God will fill the world (Isaiah 11:9)
* He will include and attract people from all cultures and nations (Isaiah 11:10)
* All Israelites will be returned to their homeland (Isaiah 11:12)
* Death will be swallowed up forever (Isaiah 25:8)
* There will be no more hunger or illness, and death will cease (Isaiah 25:8)
* All of the dead will rise again (Isaiah 26:19)
* The Jewish people will experience eternal joy and gladness (Isaiah 51:11)
* He will be a messenger of peace (Isaiah 52:7)
* Nations will end up recognizing the wrongs they did to Israel (Isaiah 52:13-53:5)
* The peoples of the world will turn to the Jews for spiritual guidance (Zechariah 8:23)
* The ruined cities of Israel will be restored (Ezekiel 16:55)
* Weapons of war will be destroyed (Ezekiel 39:9)
* The Temple will be rebuilt (Ezekiel 40) resuming many of the suspended mitzvot
* He will then perfect the entire world to serve God together (Zephaniah 3:9)
* Jews will know the Torah without study (Jeremiah 31:33, see also New Covenant)
* He will give you all the desires of your heart (Psalms 37:4)
* He will take the barren land and make it abundant and fruitful (Isaiah 51:3, Amos 9:13-15, Ezekiel 36:29-30, Isaiah 11:6-9)

Who was Isaiah Talking about here:

Isa 53:1 Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Isa 53:2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Isa 53:4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
Isa 53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
Isa 53:9 And they[1] made His grave with the wicked--
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Isa 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
Isa 53:11 He shall see the labor of His soul,[2] and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.

How about here:

Isa 7:13 Then he said, "Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also?
Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.[2]
Isa 7:15 Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.

How about:

Isa 9:6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isa 9:7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

The Psalms:

Psa 22:1 [1] My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?

And:

Who is Lord over the King? And two of them?

Psa 110:1 The LORD said to my Lord,
"Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."

How about:

Psa 45:6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
Psa 45:7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

What God is God's?

*******************************

The first prophecy:

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel."

**************************************

How about:

Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
Deu 18:19 And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.

He will require it of you.

Jesus=Yeshua = Salvation

Jacob knew him!!!

In the middle of his blessing to his children he says:

Gen 49:18 I have waited for your salvation, O LORD!

Which is I have waited for your Jesus, O YHWH!

**********************************

Not only this, but the passover they make a cross on their door:

On the Lintel (top of door) they place the blood and then a dab on each side of the door posts.

Makes a cross.

-------------------------

The waive offering they go up and down, left and right making a cross...

Yom Kippur has the scape Goat,

Passover has the Lamb,

There is so much that points to him, the whole book is about him!

It doesn't mention Jesus by name but Christians believe that Jesus' life and works fulfilled the prophecies about the messiah from books like Isaiah and Jeremiah etc..........

The OT says that the messiah will be called Immanuel .................

also the earliest OT manuscripts date to about 500 BC and Jesus name in the language of the time was Yehoshua (Joshua - a name which is obviously in the Bible - ) a name which means something like "God Saves" or "God (is) the Saviour" so maybe "Jesus" is what Christians called the guy whose birth name might well have been something different..........

your right he is not in the old testament he is in the new testament

Some people believe that prophecies and writings in the Old Testament point to Jesus. Their proofs are usually based on mistranslations and selective reasoning. For example, the translate "young woman" as "virgin", which measn instead of "a young woman will give birth" (which makes sense) it becomes "a virgin will give birth" (which does not), etc.

Jesus is an English translation as I'm sure you know.
Because all the messianic prophecy's were fulfilled through Him.
The problem then and now is that, the Jews wanted the Lion of David, and instead got the Lamb of God.
He will return soon, look at the Hebrew Prophets and Israel's borders, and He will be the Lion, and His word will cut like a two edged sword.

Big Bobby Clobber
The problem is that the Christians use poor translations. I studied Biblical Hebrew to see what this was all about, and the translations are very bad (to the point of being totally false).

Christians do not really read the "Old Testament" so they have no clue what it is all about. And when they do they read Christian translated versions of it which means verses are added, removed and words put in that are not in the Hebrew Tanakh. That is why I read a Jewish translation of the Tanakh

mark
Read what G-D is saying about the issue 1400 years ago.
"The Jews said that the Christians follow nothing (i.e. are not on the right religion); and the Christians said that the Jews follow nothing (i.e. are not on the right religion); though they both recite the Scripture. Like unto their word, said (the pagans) who know not. Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about that wherein they have been differing"[Quran Surah 2 AlBaqarah :113]

The Old Testament ends 1,400 years before the birth of Jesus. So it has nothing to do with him.

How about in the beginning parts of Genesis it says "WE" created the all the earth etc? Who could "WE" be? Maybe the Father, Son and Holy Ghost?

a-and-a
For goodness sake, the majority of the Bible is fiction. The New Testament was compiled by the RC church from thousands of stories in the 4th c. AD when they selected those which fit with their ideas and beliefs.

it states that the messiah will be named jesus

Anna K
Jesus is just an ordinary name (there are people even today named Jesus), his name wasn't motioned in the Old Testament as just before he was born an angel came to Mary and told her that she will have a son, whom she should named Jesus.
Messiah on the other hand was mentioned in the Old Testament, and he was mentioned there many times. According to some researchers he was present even during the Genesis, when the world was created. As christian god is Trinity, and not a single person (not only God the Father, but also God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) while reading the Bible, every mentioning of the God we should understand in plural, so every time we have God mentioned, there is Jesus (Messiah) with him.
