To all of you who answered that as long as the police have a CLEAR shot... nonsense. The police can think they have a clear shot and it turns out that it's not. You NEVER let the robber have the control-- and, the robber is in complete control when authorities can't stop him from murdering. It's only ethical and conscionable to kill the murderous animal if it protects your people.

ARE YOU SERIOUSLY SAYING THAT IF SOMEONE WERE ATTACKING YOUR FAMILY, YOU'D BE THINKING ABOUT SPARING THE CRIMINAL WHEN HE'S SHOOTING AT YOU? Terrorists are rocketing Israel and she is protecting her family. This is war! Plus, Israel has shown too much restraint, in my opinion.

By the way, why are you (the pro-robbers) okay when the police get killed. So backwards!

This is anything but fair: a few million Israelis versus a couple of billion Arabs...

Where I come from responsibility for any death resulting directly or indirectly from an illegal act falls on the one committing the crime. In your scenario the robber would be held accountable if not killed.

In the case of Hamas they should be held accountable for
1.) Launching rockets and mortars into civilian areas of Israel.
2.) Launching rockets and mortars from civilian areas within the Gaza Strip.
3.) Hiding in those same areas from the IDF/IAF and using the inhabitants as shields.

These are all violations of international law and there is no justification for any of them.

Israel has a moral right and an obligation to its citizens to protect it from such violence.

Finally, there is NO law that requires a country to use "proportionate" means when defending its people from attack.

Yes the police will be blamed... They are not supposed to do anything to risk a civilian's life... and are not supposed to shoot unless they have a CLEAR shot...

In most hostage situations there are always civilian causalities. So they will be launch a full investigation about the civilian being shot, and will make a determination if the police acted justly. In most cases, they are cleared from doing any harm. That's when the families of the victim that was shot can sue for wrongful death, and that always ends up in the favor of the victim.

I do understand what you are trying to say, but your example is incompled without mentioning that while the robber is holding a hostage and killing other people, the police in reverse is killing the robber's family incl. eldery and kids. Also accicently own police men and other people who are not involved in the robbery. It might be right in some situations to risk a hostage's live to save others lives, but it's deadly wrong to kill the robber's kids for their father's action.

If this would be right, then please do not get surprised if family members of the robber will never agree with such a system.

First off, who judges whether someone is in their right mind? Do you? By what means do you judge?

What if the situation was different? Imagine it this way:

I have a home. It was my great-grandfathers home and I live in it. I have a business attached to my home. This is my livelihood.

Then some squatters come onto my land. They take over my home. Because I trust in the governments, and because they are infinitely stronger than me, I get forced off my land, and away from my business.

Then I get forced out of my relatives' home too, along with my relatives.

Then I get forced out the slum we were living in.

Then out the shanty town, made of tents outside the city.

Finally, after everything we'd worked generations for is gone, and I have to beg the squatters for work, which I might not get, after getting denied access to travel, to hospitals and doctors, to eduction for myself and my family, after getting beaten by the squatters' police, I have enough. I just have enough.

And I go back to my home, and I try to get my things back. Even though the government and the squatters (same thing now) are still infinitely stronger than me, I have nothing left to lose. I see my children and elders dying in despair and destitution. After 60 years of oppression, I have nothing left to live for, so I might as well die with dignity, and try to regain what I lost so long ago.

I stage a "home invasion". I shoot people, hold hostages. The police come, and in an attempt to kill me, they also kill a hostage I'm holding.

Is it justified? No one in this scenario is justified. Killing people isn't okay. Even if you're desperate. The point of the scenario is to give a more accurate context, not to excuse. But in the end, if the squatters hadn't taken over my land: I WOULDN'T BE TAKING HOSTAGES and no one would be killed.

Palestinians weren't killing Jews forever. They lived side by side with Jews and Christians since time out of mind. No problems, outside of the normal squabbles of neighbours. It wasn't until the Zionists, and terrorist like Ariel Sharon (who really was considered a terrorist, look up his life) came along and started killing, stealing from and oppressing the Palestinians.

Honestly, if you would spend a little time reading history, and not just listening to commentaries, you would gain perspective at least, and that might serve you better than spreading hate.
