Can you think of any Innovative ways to enforce traffic laws in South Africa?

It seems if fines do not work or they just don’t get paid. I was looking how motorists were jumping red traffic lights this morning and I thought if electronically activated spikes at traffic lights will work. The spikes should be activated by the red light and if the specific light is out, the spikes should not work. Yes, it will be chaos initially, but what can we come up with to enforce traffic laws?

Impound their cars on the spot until they pay. After three months of non payment sell it as scrap metal. For third time offenders, sell their cars as scrap metal. Invest the money made this way, into a good public transport system.
That should lighten the traffic load in the cities as well as getting rid of badly maintained vehicles. Lets face it, if a person cannot afford the fine then he most likely cannot afford to maintain his vehicle properly.

I would like to see technology where you can not start your car if you are over the legal alcohol consumption limit. maybe some kind of breathaliser in your console...

Harsher penalties and the creation of a system where the approval of at least 3 senior officials from different districts would be needed to "squash" a fine.
No one in South Africa really takes a fine seriously as they pay R50 to the local magistrate as a bribe and the offense disappears.
Other laws that should be introduced and strictly enforced:
Drunk driving - Car to be repossessed by the state
Speeding - Fines to be tripled and after 5 offenses car to be repossessed by the state
Ignoring basic laws - Fines to be quadrupled and offenders to attend compulsary road rules training courses at their own cost
All harsh but necessary in a third world country with locals who are totally oblivious to the rights of other road users.

I have such a problem with the taxis. Every morning they try and duck and dive in the wrong lanes, on the yellow lanes and on the pavements. We have such bad soil erosion now because of this pavement driving there are dongas next to william nichol. They get stopped by the Metro, and get a fine. 2 Minutes later they are racing down the yellow lane again. Fines don't scare them. how about we take away their cars? Much better. They don't pay the fines they cant have their taxi back. Maybe just do away with fines, and only confiscate. Its the only way they will learn is to have the most important thing taken away. Because life is not important to them. Or else they wouldnt drive so recklessly. Take away their taxis and maybe they will learn to be humble.

Wow, I'm glad some one else is concerned with this matter! I have pondered over this for a long time, but I can't seem to come to a good conclusion.
I think your idea of spikes at red lights would be good. But, that would only solve a few of the traffic crimes. Also, it would be very expensive to do, and South Africa isn't really a "rich" country.
I live in California, and I am only 13 so there is not much I can do (sadly) but I have family in South Africa, and I am very concerned about them. I know it's not always the safest place to be.
If we can get more people interested in helping out with this matter, it would be very good!

Hahaha...spikes...and we know that there are dysfunctional traffic lights in every city/town........I foresee a lot of law suits......

How about real visible policing and instant judgements on roadside for speed offences as a start........in this case they should remove two wheels and release them after 48 hours.......

Reb Da Rebel
You know how madly in love with their cars all mottorists are?

I'd have a device that sprays your car with a hidious neon colour just as it passes the red light. You'd have only yourself to blame. Spikes I think would only cause more traffic...dont you think?

I think the idea of spikes is an excellent one; we see them in malls to prevent ppl leaving without paying, so why cant the spikes be used for more serious things. At least it will stop taxi and other drivers from creeping over the line, that really bugs me!
In fact, with the way we drive, i think we should place spike in MORE places. How about in no-stopping zones? In no- parking areas connected to a timer system? All solid no passing lines to be replaced by a permanent version?

However, this is only fixing a symptom, not the problem.
The k53 method has to be scrapped and an effective, modern driving system tailored to SA roads needs to be introduced as a matter of urgency.

Ferrari Man - I think those are in the pipeline. Fantastic idea!

Inno - You solved my dilemma! I was going to say there are a some problems with the spike: what if youre the only one in a dodgy area, and you need to make a move to protect yourself? Or some doos comes barreling down the road and rear ends you into the spikes? I think a combination of both ideas at certain intersections, with the spikes on a timer system (like in the morning and afternoon rush hours) would be an excellent idea.

I don't know. It's kind of hard to punish people by depriving them when they don't have much to lose. Unless the government needs to start jailing people on evading fines, or garnishing wages.

I think your idea was better than mine: A traffic cop with a AK-47 at every intersection.

Dragon_Of_The_Claw
instead of speed cameras - have speed rocket launchers.

The UK system of getting points on your license was the first thing in all my years of driving to slow me down.

The thought of losing my independence was just too much. :-)

Steve C
Increase the price of fuel, and physically take away the vehicles of people that are repeat offenders/not paying fines.

Snorkie
spikes are an excellent idea!! Why has no one ever thought about it because jumping red robots are just unforgiveable! I agree only real fear would stop motorists/road hogs

cakes4africa
Your idea of the spikes got me thinking: "What happens if an ambulance comes through with sirens on"?

I must admit that Inno has a good idea. It is a bit like chopping off the hand when one is a thief. Everyone can see that one has stolen something if one has a hand missing. Same with the paint, everyone will be able to see that this person is not law abiding.

ulimate experience
very very harsh punishment for drunk drivers !!!!! - they are a bunch of losers !!!

Sorry to be the one to come up with a negative on spikes ...but the idea makes me nervous. What if I am at a red robot, and some scary characters start heading my way, and I decide to put-foot?
I am only mentioning this based on personal experience!
Impound their cars for a month or two. Make them pay a very heavy fine.

How about instead of spikes, cameras that send a picture to the government and from there the govt sends the people a fine.
