English lyric: On a hill in the night
We lie in wait in the dark
In the mud and the blood I lie cold,
Pack and rain clinging to me
And my home and my farm burned to the ground so they can catch us
But those flames and that fire now burn deep, deep within me
De La Rey, De La Rey, will you come to lead the Boers?
De La Rey, De La Rey
General, general as one man we shall fall about you
General De La Rey.
Against the Kakies* who laugh
A handful of us against a whole great army
And the crags at our backs,
They think it's all over.
But the heart of a Boer lies deeper and wider, they shall see it yet
On a horse he is coming, the Lion of the West Transvaal.
Because my wife and my child lie wasting away in a camp*
and the Kakies' marrow runs over a nation which shall rise again.
*The Boere called the English soldiers Kakies, as in khaki, due to their uniforms. Another term is "Rooinek", literally "redneck", because the English burned so easily in the sun.
*British concentration camp
PS. I love this song! |

No racial connotations...Hell, Afrikaners has to be so careful to have any cultural pride these days. For the sake of peace in modern South Africa people should be careful to distinguish between true racism (which can go either way) and cultural pride. The British did some horrible things to the young Afrikaner nation, but we put it behind us and carried on. Afrikaners did some horrible things to our fellow South Africans. Now, it's time to carry on...
The lyrics, the artist and the video are well executed from an artistic point of view. We should appreciete good art when it comes round, coz there's a lot of "lesser" art out there.
Well done Bok!
"De La Rey" has just been awarded double platinum status according to it's sales! |

What song did he do? I haven't been to in my country for a long time!!! :-(
Thanks Kitty, I will
I have listened to the song and watched the music videos and it almost had me in tears!! There is absolutely nothing racist about it whatsoever. The concentration camp scenes really made me well up. I think this song is just a sign that we a Afrikaaners can stand together if we want or have to!!! I am going to let my mum send me his cd. Thanks for asknig the question Kitty. |

IT IS NOT RACIAL AT ALL!!!!!!
It is about the war with the English!!!
If everybody would just listen to the song properly. There is absolutely NOTHING racial about it.....
I LOVE that song, actually the whole cd of Bok Van Blerk. |

Racial lyrics??? This is telling my one thing, they are scared. If a nation is moved by a song like this, this means that there is still a lot of fire burning in their harts! They must keep pushing us........ |

I think that it is the government of South Africa who is trying to kill the Afrikaans culture that is why any thing that may portray the history and culture of the white South African is called to be racial.
The White South African is just like any other culture they want to Cherise their own cultural history which is most of time seen as racism. |

I doubt if he had THE WHOLE OF SOUTH AFRICA BUZZING. I am Afrikaans, stay in the country, and have never heard of the guy.
SO, at least one person was not 'buzzing' about De La Rey |

Depends which side you a looking at it from. Guess it may not have any racial connotations for some, but you have to understand that people don't see things the same way.
Then again, he didn't have the country buzzing either as he was only popular to the afrikaans speaking community. |

No racist lyrics - but everytime the song is played the right wingers stand up and put their hands over their hearts. To me the song has been played to death - I leave a pub the third time it is played. |
