It is really disastrous when you weigh the benefits against the terrible diseases or the environmental disasters that they cause.

Powerpoint presentations may show us good visuals but the preparation takes time. Worse, it encourages passive thinking. I always thought that chalk boards are so cool. Ideas develop, and are not presented.

Cellphones take away our privacy. Internet allows us to really connect to the world but chips away time with loved ones.

I agree. New inventions cause tension that leads to many illnesses including high blood pressure.
Take email for instance. People send you one and expect you to answer the same day. When people wrote letters in the past you could easily put the letter aside for a few days till you have time to answer.

Cell phones reach you anywhere you are. If you do not answer then the caller will wonder what happened as if you are supposed to be available 24/7.

When people went to movies for entertainment they would choose a good movie since they would not do it every day. With all the movies and series available we may watch more than we should including too much violence which is bad for the nerves.

Look at the suicide rate at advanced countries like Sweden and japan. The tension is high, the demands are high and it is sometimes more than people can handle.

As Clown said, it's how you use them, not the existence of those things themselves. And if you use them in a proper way - which means to use them as a TOOL - I believe they can only help - and they help very much indeed!

Let's start with cell phones... I can live without a cell phone with no problem, but I'm very happy to have it since it makes my life a lot easier. I actually think it gives MORE, not less freedom. For example, I don't need to sit in my office any more, waiting for a call or for something to be done. I can go out (since my job allows me to do that :) ) and receive a call outside of the office (or outside of home). I can also reach people much more easily now when there are cell phones, because they are available most of the time. And if I want to take a break and don't want to be available at the moment, I just switch off the phone or keep it silent. Or if I don't want to receive a particular call, I just don't answer it. I honestly do not see what could be the problem here since we all have the ABILITY to use all those things just as we please.

As for PC and internet, I find it a marvelous invention as it helps me to stay in touch with friends living all around the world, with people I've mostly been meeting on my journeys. In this situation, it's solely your fault if you misuse the opportunity, for any reason. if you don't have life, you don't have life, having or not having PC won't change it, for better or worse. And if you have life, you have nothing to worry about. Then PC and internet will only be a helpful tool to you, just like anything else.

As for making us lazy... I disagree again. First of all, it's never the situation of this kind that makes us become something, it's just that such a situation reveals who we really are. Internet is tremendous when it comes to gathering information on any subject you can imagine! Isn't that a great "practice" field for one's curiosity and creativity? If one has it, of course.

Finally, regarding claims that a letter is nicer than an email... All I can say is: what matters is substance, not a form. Besides, that would be like people once saying that a message made in stone was nicer and more precious than the one written on the paper.

Besides, if you go down the road, then you could ask the very same question for any invention of the mankind. Wouldn't a washing machine make us lazy then as well? Wouldn't a car do so, too? But as I said, it's not about it, it eventually comes to a person and their personal characteristics. Nothing more.

Another point, aren't we supposed to try and save as much of our time as we can, inventing tools and machines which would help us to do things faster, easier and more efficiently, so that we have more time left for some other, more interesting, creative and demanding things in our lives? What is one going to do with the time left on their hands is (again) totally up to them.

And yes, I'm positive I can live without any of those things with no suffering. For example, it happens every now and then that I forget to take a cell phone with me and I'm never bothered about it.

yup. i heard a story once about a man with so many electronics that he took more time cleaning and maintaining them than he did save time using them. =D

everyone made great points..
but im just thinking of how i lost power a few weeks ago for three days, and i was
1. dying from cold (then i put some sweaters on and made a fire it was fine)
2. bored out of my mind without tv/ comp (then i sat with my parents and actually had a chat with them for once and it was fun)
3. i didn't know how to make any food without a stove ect. (then my mom cooked everything over the fire ( she is brilliant lol )
but just being in that situation made me see how much we take for granted all these things, but at the same time how we can totally survive without them !
and somehow i always always think in my mind that in olden days things were somehow simpler..it was a whole different world,and our current world is such a mess :(

I disagree with you Amal,, I think your question would be ,," how far the new inventions changed our lives?", new inventions can make our lives better or worse, depend on the way we use them,, I will give you just one example no more ,, "" Internet "" ,The Internet has had many effects. it pushes world to speed up, things go faster than they used to change, transactions, research, communication -- it's as if the world was already accelerating, I think it allows people who might never meet each other in the real world to open up conversations, without that invention i wouldn't have this conversation with you, or even know you that you don't drink tea lol, on the other hand,, Internet has had many bad effects, I think everybody of us knows it .
