" one of my colleagues in work , he is religious Muslim, anyway , our manager is Christian, so when he sneezed, my colleague told me, don’t tell him "God bless you" and he told me, there is a Hadeeth saying that we cant tell "god bless you" to Christians,
I was shocked!!!!!!!

The reason you are now hearing these things in Egypt is the increase in the spread of wahabbism into Egyptian society:

I will discuss this in understanding of what a true hadith means on behalf of the person, then please allow me to explain something’s because if you had this knowledge you or anyone else could have challenged it: first lets agree on 3 points :

Not all people with knowledge are religious with the true gift of Ikhlas from God, not all religious people have the right knowledge with the true gift of sincerity or ilm from God.

Third point: Mohammed SAW the most beloved man to have lived from us Muslims would never ever say or do something to hurt another being without a reason for a better good but even Mohammed SAW was human and not infallible in ever single word and aspect May Allah SWT be pleased with him. What have come to be known as the `Six Authentic Books' of hadith of the majority Sunnite `orthodoxy' were compiled, precisely after the promulgation of this theory, by Bukhari (d. 256/870), Muslim (d. 261/875), Abu Daud (d. 275/888), Tirmidhi (d. 279/892), Ibn Maja (d. 273/886), and al-Nasa'i (d. 303/915) during the second half of the second and the beginning of the third centuries of Islam, between 220 and 270 years after the Prophet's SAW death.. Many Hadiths although narrated sincerely from the observers or hears point of view are contextual, to time, to place to space, to situation, to revelation period.

Remember that it took 22 years, 5 months and 14 days for the whole revelation of Quraan to our Prophet SAW, The interval between first and the second revelation was 2 years and six months. The revelation of the Qur'an as we also know was 10 years Madinah & 10 years in Makkah. Although in these 22 years, 5 months and 14 days Our Prophet (ra) was being a Human being as well as Prophet SAW, he was being observed, gossiped, talked about, all that he did all, all that he prayed, he washed, that he said, all that he dressed like, ate like, looked like, spoke like, Radiallahu Anhu .Some where a long the line we have to expect human error by narrators for the hadiths as well as the compilers of the hadiths.

If anyone is agreed on those three points read on if not don’t bother!- I have enough of challenging the negative effects of Wahaabism/Salafism – ‘the new Gulf Islam’ in every day life and deaf ears do not listen.

Surely, God does not change the condition of any people until they themselves change.

That is because God does not change the blessings He had bestowed upon any people, unless they themselves change.

Please also note with these words I’m not saying this Hadith is weak in its narration- Simply if I said that I would be stupid because it takes far greater human beings than me to decide what they personally think is the strength of a particular hadith. That search can sometimes take a persons life time and they still didn’t reach a conclusion.

This is for those that don’t yet know what is meant by weak in narration:

The final verdict on a hadith, i.e. Sahih (sound), Hasan (good), Da`if (weak) or Maudu` (fabricated, forged), depends critically on this factor.

Among the early traditionists, mostly of the first two centuries, ahadith were classified into two categories only: Sahih and Da`if; al-Tirmidhi was to be the first to distinguish Hasan from Da`if.

And from another source:
Al-Suyuti's point is that the weak or very weak hadith due to bad memory or broken chain or camouflage or unidentifiable narrators can upgrade (yarqa) with a single other confirmatory chain, while the very weak hadith which contains a fasiq or someone accused of lying can upgrade from the rank of munkar, not with a single other chain but a multitude of like chains. So through the ages of Islam hadiths have been used to serve the purpose of many agendas be they good or bad in different viewpoints. The Saudi and Gulf countires, Scholars/Goverments/Royality: for example have used the Hadiths in many ways for their own aims, be it that they have wanted to exclude women from certain aspects of public life. i.e Driving..our speaking in the public sphere such as politics they have picked out of thousands of hadiths what would best suit the needs of their own agendas. How do they do this—and these hadiths that come out of peoples mouths all over the world- how do they get in certain books? How do so many know about particular hadiths, when there are thousands to remember?

If we imagine a pyramid that all levels would together- knowledge goes up and down but final orders come from the top:

If we look at the infrastructure of for spreading the Saudi version of Islam. i.e Salafism: Its starts from: The top ranks: Council of Senior ‘Ulama (Chairman is the Grand Mufti) , Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, (Sheikh ‘Abd al-Aziz Al al-Sheikh), King of Saudi Arabia (King Abdullah bin Abd al-Aziz al-Saud) ,------- the second phase to pass on ideas goes to Ministry of Education (Headed by Abdallah bin Salih al-Ubayd) Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowment, Da’wah & Guidance (Headed by Sheikh Salih bin ‘Abd al-Aziz al-Sheikh)---------- the third phase is: Muslim World League (MWL)(The Grand Mufti is Chairman of Constituent Council of the MWL), International Islamic Relief Organisation (Headed by Grand Mufti) Other Saudi
Charities Headed by various members of Saudi royal family & private businessmen), Al-Haramain Foundation (The Minister of Islamic Affairs Chairman of al- Haramain Administrative Council), Ministry of Islamic Affairs Departments in Saudi Embassies, World Association of Muslim Youth (WAMY) (The Minister ofIslamic Affairs is Chairman of theWAMY Secretariat)------

So all these millions of people are involved in passing on information and promoting certain hadith over others, theses millions of people have billions of Saudi revenue money to pass on for this. If they want to say knock down sites of old buildings and structures that have been around since the time of Mohammed SAW, they will find a hadith for this and promote it, like for example the social sphere and place of women when on Haj. So the scholars write the books and promote certain hadiths. This is not difficult because “The original manuscripts have been lost, but a very few copies have survived. An example is the manuscript of Hammam ibn Munabbih, who learned from Abu Hurairah and from him he wrote his manuscript which contains 138 hadiths. This manuscript is believed to have been written down around the middle of the first century after the Hijrah (seventh century CE).” And the fact that the The Sunni canon of hadith took its final form more than 220/270 years after the death of Muhammad SAW (632 AD). Later scholars may have debated the authenticity of particular hadith but the authority of the canon as a whole was not questioned. Hence why certain hadiths they come out of our months because perhaps we read it, it all looks Islamic, it all looks fine…but we are all human with sacks on our backs that we do not see, we carry in the sacks, age, gendar, class, culture, the books we read many many things including life experiences.
So the position where I stand personally when it comes to Hadiths is that with Maliki:

(“Abu al-`Arabi al-Maliki said:

"Absolutely no practice is based on weak hadith." [Also, Ibn Taymiyya was of the opinion that no ruling of mustahabb can ever be based on a weak hadith.] I Shaykh (Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalani) insists on the following, writing himself:

"The conditions for religious practice based on weak hadith are three:

This is unanimously agreed upon (muttafaqun `alayh):

1 - That the weakness must not be very strong (ghayr shadid). This excludes those ahadith singly recorded by liars or those accused of lying, and those who make gross mistakes.

2 - That there be a general legal basis for it. This excludes what is invented and has no legal basis to start with.

3 - That one not think, while practicing on the basis of it, that it has been established as true (an la ya`taqida thubutahu). This is in order that no words which the Prophet did not (verifiably) say be attributed to him." )

I personally think if a person accepts or rejects all hadiths those are both extreme views, there have not yet at that point to make those decisions learned enough about Mohamed SAW. Which means to me that the halal and the haraam is clear if something is harmful and could be used to harm others then we need to think about that. Yet we must use the brains Allah swt gave to us to know the impact of the words we are using- like the man- I would personally say a non- Egyptian/Islamic/ cultural term when speaking to a person that I did not know the religion- this is hard for example because in Egyptian Arabic the greeting would be Assalaamualikum but say in other places with more mixed faiths they would say Marhaba.

The answers of Ruby/7ala/shalfat are all correct put into context but what is more correct is that people are able to questions what is wrong and right without losing faith inshallah.

Allah knows best

For further current information on this issue of Hadith narration: read the BBC Link:

“The country's powerful Department of Religious Affairs has commissioned a team of theologians at Ankara University to carry out a fundamental revision of the Hadith, the second most sacred text in Islam after the Koran.”

“As part of its aggressive programme of renewal, Turkey has given theological training to 450 women, and appointed them as senior imams called "vaizes".”

7ala is fluffy ?
Go back & tell him that we all worship the same one God.
I dont know about the Hadeeth's, but its common courtesy to say 'Bless you' when someone sneezes. This man sounds like the kind of 'jobsworths' it work with.

@ Jeff, i think you have me wrong here. I am an English Christian, & i have very much respect for other people & other religions, yes including Muslims. I'm guessing you refer to my answer about the persecution of Christians in Egypt (TV prog the other day). I was just stating that in MY experience i had not found this to be so, but that it may happen.
My husband is a Muslim & he tells me that both religions believe that we worship the same one God, so there is nothing wrong with the common courtesy of blessing each other. We just worship in different ways, thats all.
As for divine retribution, that is for God, not for you to advise me of, so please refrain from doing so.
&&&, i am not lying nor hypocrite =be careful my friend.

It is sad, there is also a hadith that says we can no longer say or write Mecca it has to be Makkah and the term mosque should never be used only majid.
Giving respect were it is due I often wonder about these Mullahs and Imams who have little to do than sit around writing what are mostly rather silly hadiths.
Honestly I get an email every week or so with new hadiths.
Most serve no real purpose and only complicate Islam further. So I will keep with what is written in the Quran and the accepted books and goes with what my heart tells me is the right and wrong thing.

ADITT: AA you have excelled your self girl.....full respect.
This lady knows more than many of the so called experts and her views of the extreme end of Islam should be acknowledged and applauded....... credos

Jeff, man , you are trying hard and I told you before wherever you are from there will be no civil wars in Egypt. So relax yourself and learn.

There are etiquette in Islam for everything, eating, drinking , sleeping, walking,...etc. Sneezing is one of these things.

When a Muslim Sneezes he should say "Al7amdulellah" or "Thank God" then other Muslims when they hear him they say "Yar7amkom Allah" or "God Bless you" then he replies "Yahdeekom Allah wa yosle7 balakom" or "May Allah Guide you and put peace in you mind". and it has to happen in this order.

It happens once that The Prophet (PBUH) said "God Bless You " to one person and not the other, so his companions asked him why , he said "This man said (Thank God) and the other didn't"

Check yourself, Sahih Albokhary , hadith no. 6225

That is as simple as it goes without all the religious war propaganda people trying to start up there.

---------

Edit:

Found the missing piece I was looking for about answering a sneeze of non muslims:

" Abu Dawud reported that Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Jews would sneeze in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he (peace and blessings be upon him) may invoke mercy for them, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) would answer their sneeze by saying: ‘May Almighty Allah guide you to the right path and set your mind right.’”

According to Ibn Daqiq Al-`Eid, if we took into account the opinion that answering the sneezer means wishing him good in general, the non-Muslims who sneeze may be answered by Muslims, but in a special way. They should ask Almighty Allah to guide them to the right path and set their mind right [as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did with the Jews according to the above hadith "

Moonrise
there is no Hadith that says such a thing.
you mustnt repeat such stories that would cause antagonism between Moslems and Christians .
we have lived together for centuries .
we have one country, Egypt , and no where else to go if we fight .
dont let our enemies watch us hurting each other by words or otherwise .
we drink from one Nile and feed from one earth .
we are brothers and sisters .

M&U
I agree with you its veryyyyyyyyyy sad. Why can't we say God bless you to Christians??? They have a Heavenly religion just like ours!! In the Quran it says to be tolerant of all religions, particularly Judaism and Christianity. Who cares if they have different ways of living life than muslims?? They're still human beings and they still have a soul.

Why not? They are just words that are comfortable for the receiver. You can do anything you want to do, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else physically. You guys gotta lighten up.
