The only people who can trace back a lineage to the ancient Canaanites are the Jews, not the Palestinians, as Canaanites did not exist any longer after the 8th century BCE and they were not annihilated but assimilated into the Jewish people.

Conclusion: the Palestinians cannot claim any descent from the ancient Canaanites - if so, why not to pretend also the Syrian "occupied territories," namely, Lebanon? Why do they not speak the language of the ancient Canaanites, that was Hebrew? Because they are NOT Canaanites at all!

When the first Hebrews arrived in Canaan they shared the land but did not intermarry, as it was an interdiction for Avraham's family to marry the Canaanites. Nevertheless, eleven of the twelve sons of Yaakov married Canaanite women (the other son married an Egyptian), and since then, the Tribes of Israel began to mix with the local inhabitants. After the Exodus, when the Israelites conquered the Land, there were some wars between them and the Canaanites throughout the period of the Shoftim (Judges), and were definitively subdued by King David. By that time, most Canaanites were married to Israelites, others voluntarily accepted Torah becoming Israelites, others joined up in the Israelite or Judahite army. Actually, the Canaanites are seldom mentioned during the Kings' period, usually in reference to their heathen customs introduced among the Israelites, but no longer as a distinguishable people, because they were indeed assimilated into the Israelite nation. When the Assyrians overran the Kingdom of Israel, they did not leave any Canaanite aside, as they had all become Israelites by that time. The same happened when the Babylonians overthrew the Kingdom of Judah.

Jews have lived in the Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael) continuously for over 3000 years. There have been various Jewish states on that land throughout history, including the Kingdom of Israel (roughly 930s BCE - 720s BCE) and before that the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah (under the House of David, roughly 1050BCE - 930BCE). King David himself made Jerusalem his capital over 3,000 years ago.

The modern State of Israel is 60 years old, having been founded on May 14th, 1948. But it is not the first Jewish state on that particular land. It is not even the first Jewish state on that land to go by the name of Israel.

The founding of the State of Israel represents the revival of the Jewish homeland, previously interrupted by periods of exile and foreign control.

Jesus was born in no country. All land is old, countries and permanent borders are a more modern thing. As said by others Israel turned 60 yesterday and the present day is what needs to addressed now. It don't matter who was where first, people have to live together now or they have no real future.

To address an issue someone else brought up. The Jewish people are not the only descendants or lineage that can be traced back to Canaan,Thomas Jefferson's lineage has been traced back to Canaan. Bottom line we are all members of the human race and have the same origin.

Israel was created on May 14, 1948. Before May 15, 1948 it was the British Mandate of Palestine. Cheers!

Israel is only 60 years old. Hard to believe its that young, feels like forever for the Palestinians.

You are thinking about the country of 2008 years ago.

This present country is just 60 years.

I should say that these two countries are unrelated.

Modern Israel (as we know it today) was officially recognized as a sovereign country 60 years ago (in fact, yesterday we celebrated the Independence Day).

The kingdoms of Israel and Judah ruled the land untill 500 BCE, and Jesus was born in a later period, when the Romans ruled the land.

yes and no

the first time the name israel is mentioned anywhere is on an egyptian hyrogliphic dating from around 1200 BC.
a kingdom called israel inhabited by the ancestors of today's jews did exist for a long time

but the land was renamed palestine after the romans killed and exiled many jews from the country and insulted the jews

the modern state of israel has existed for 60 years after jews returned to their old homeland after 2000 years of exile

Yes. If you count from the days of Moses.

No, not right

Israel is one of the newest countries of the world.

When Jesus was born, there was no Israel.

Hebrews, originally known as Habirus (which means the nomadic ”homeless” people as mentioned in Assyro-Babylonian literature and possibly the early Hebrews) had never had a homeland.

They may originally come from Persia to Babble thousands of years ago and then moved to the land of Canaan and then to Egypt till they were kicked out from it and had to hide in Sinai for 40 years awaiting the death of Pharaoh to return to the land of Canaan which was part of the Egyptian Empire at that time.

Later, the Romans pushed them out of the land.

During their stay in the land of Canaan, they did not stop harassing their neighbors, the same as they do now.

They had severe fights with the Palestinians, who were the people of the coastal area from Gaza to Haifa, during which Palestinians defeated them for several times and took their ARK in which they kept the tablets for God commandments and other secret books.

On May 1948 they announced the birth of their own country in Palestine following a UN resolution authorizing the establishment of the new state on specified territories in Palestine to start a new era of violence in the Middle East..

Israels an ancient country that was destroyed by the romans and its people scattered throughout the middle east north africa and europe, modern israel is sixty years old.Science has proven that the vast majority of israelis are descendants of those displaced. That being said there have been jews living there since the 2nd millennium BCE.

Firstly, there is the Kingdom of Israel:
Originaly, the Hebrews (a semetic race related to the Arabs and Phonecians) settled part of the area that is today called Israel/Palestine. Sometime near 1000 B.C., the Hebrews became a Kingdom under a man named Saul and the Hebrew territory became known as Israel-Judah. Israel-Judah reached it largest extent under the reign of a king named Solomon, and then later split into two warring factions (Irsrael and Judah). Eventualy, the Hebrews were conquered by the Persians, and the majority of the Hebrew populace relocated to what is today Iraq and Iran. Eventualy the Jews were granted semi-autonomy and allowed to return to their homeland. Eventualy, the are was conquered by the Greeks, and later the Romans who destroyed much of Jerusalem and dispearsed the Jews across the Roman world. The local Philistines moved in and have been living there ever since. Technically, one could agrue that this particular Israel is a very old country.

Secondly, there is the Israel that was established in 1948:
In 1948, under pressure from the Jews, the UN created the State of Israel for the Jews (much to the suprise and annoyance of the Palestinians who were living on the land the UN gave to the Jews). A couple breif wars followed, in which large numbers of Palestinians were forced out into Syria and Jordan. The Israelies quickly seized land (often bulldozing entire Palestinian villages to get it) and began setting up settlements in order to distribute Israeli population in new aquired territory such as the Golan. This particular country has only lasted sixty years and has very few connections to the original Israel.
For example, as I've already pointed out, the original Israel was comprised of the Hebrews- a Semetic race. After living for nearly two thousand years in Europe, the modern day Israelies are far more European than they are Semetic. Asside from a small minority, almost the entire population of Israel (asside from the Palestinians) are immigrants.
Religion is also a key issue. The original Jews, if our knowledge of history is accurate, were highly religious. Currently, only a slim minority of professing Jews follow a particular religion and a heft number of those who do are converts.
In short, the original Israel was an old country, the modern day Israel is not.

Israel, as a country is (only) 60 years old.
It has also been an ancient kingdom between the 11th century B.C and 928 BC, when it split to the northern kingdom of Israel (which was demolished in 722 BC and most of its people were exiled to Assyria) and the kingdom of Judea and existed in different levels of independence until 586 BC, when most of its people were exiled to Babylon.
At 538 BC The Jews/"Judaists" where allowed (By king Cyrus) to go back to Israel, to build the second temple, and to have a certain level of autonomity.
And so it goes on... every couple of centuries some other power conquers the land (the Helenists, the Romans, The Byzanties, Arabs, Crusaders, Othomans) by which time most of the world's Jewish population was living outside Israel.
After WW1, the British empire were given a mandate to create sovereign countries in the areas it controlled in the middle east. Israel proved to be a problematic area because of the mixed Arabs/Jewish population. A day before the mandate was over, Israel has declared independence.

Palestine has never been a country ever.Israel was an anicent country that was destroyed in the roman era and reborn in 1948.

zion no more
Hi Tri,

No, sorry, you are mistaken. As others have mentioned, ersatz israel is 60 years old.

I myself do no recognize ersatz israel as country. The zionists invaded the land of Palestine; created borders; and simply call themselves a country.

History has shown, that all occupations have failed. All tyrants fall; the evidence that ersatz israel has started to crumble is all around us. When it has gone, what will be left? The answers is the land of Palestine. There will not be a void. Ersatz israel was not built in a void; it was built on Palestinian land. When ersatz israel is gone, Palestine will remain.

Yes, Israel is an ancient land. Its people (the Jewish nation) have a long and unique history, described here in brief:
http://www.science.co.il/Israel-history.asp
The modern State of Israel, mentioned by other answerers, is seen as a miraculous opportunity for the Jewish people who were denied sovereignty by foreign oppressors for many years.
