I'd say yes & no.
On one hand, my hubby is is still very Egyptian in his thinking, i mean you can take the man out of Egypt, but you cant take the Egyptian out of the man.
On the other hand, he has done the right thing when living abroad, trying to integrate, learn the ways, getting to know the people, it will make his life here easier.
He is still very proud to be Egyptian, & i hope this never changes, but he has said he likes living in England. He did however say to me, that if anything was to happen to me, he would go home, even though he is doing well here, & can do more for his family by being here, its really me he stays for. Thats sweet & sad at the same time. |

I have lived in other Countries more than my home land of Alexandria Egypt.
I do tend to use English language more than any other but that doesn't mean to say I have lost my identity, I was born Egyptian & will remain so no matter where destiny takes me. My heart, My soul & Identity will always remain EGYPTIAN/MUSLIMA............... I am sooooooo Proud of my Heretige! |

it does, but it depends on the age you go to the west in it. take me for example makes them go crazy too, take me for example, i came to the US when i was 12, and i grew up here, but i still visited egypt every year. in the first 2-3 years i use to hate it, i wanted to go back to egypt all the time and i never forget who i am and where i am from. and then a few years later, i dont know what happend, i dont know if i forgot that im an egytian or did i just get used to the US becuase its hard for me to go back before at least 10 years or so. and then i started getting americanized. but i still have the egyptian in me. i started knowing girls, drinking, and working like a machine, studying like a nerd!! and now, i am lost, alot of times i ask myself am i an egyptian or an american. or not neccesarly like that, but the real question is do i want to spend the rest of my life here or there. its hard to give all the people that stood beside me and helped me become who i am right now. i have high popularity here, i am the manager of two restuarants at age 20! i have my arabic and american friends that stood beside me and helped me go through everything. i dont want to give up all of that, but i also dont want to give up all that love for egypt. the normal life. family work in the morning, family in the afternoon. i am tired of working day and night, carrying a gun at this age, and being responsible since i was 11 or 12. so you get lost and you dont know what your doing anymore, its like the ghorab that wanted to walk like the tawoos (peacock) so he couldnt walk like a peacock but forgot the walk of the ghorab. you wanna see men when they cry at the end of the night, come see me. |

Yea seems so! But it also depends on the person and how long they've been away. Its good to be multi cultured. With the amount of technology we have nowadays you dont even have to live abroad to be affected.. you could very well be affected when you're on your own couch. Plus, this happens to everyone from any nationality not just Egyptian. Its important to stay 'Muslim' though.. no matter where you decided to move or what language you prefer speaking. |

i have lived abroad for long periods , but i remain faithful to my nationality and my religion .
im patriotic and Moslem to the core .

I've been living in Greece for 14 years, Ive practically grown up here and I haven't. I love Egypt and I'm very patriotic. I do feel strange sometimes when I'm among Egyptians. However, I don't feel strange to the country at all, I feel like it's a part of me. And I do have a lot of Egyptian characteristics even though I have adopted a lot of the Greek mentality and way of life. I don't want to generalize, but I don't think that ALL people who leave Egypt lose their sense of Egyptian identity. |

No,but they lose the sense how to deal with people in egypt. |

Some aim at erasing the Egyptian identity and succeed, others mingle with other Egytpians and return to Egypt on vacations to meet with family and friends and so keep their identity for as long as they wish. So, I guess it's a matter of choise. |

It depends on the attitude. If they want to lose their identity, it will happen for sure. If the parents make sure to remind them that they are Egyptians and talk to them in Arabic, also watch movies and TV in Arabic, they will not lose their identity. |
|

mesho f
 |
sure they are, after years of living in any place you will find yourself involuntary part of the community that you live in, the old identity will disappear automatically |
|

no it depends how their parents remind them of their identity |

I think they are well tuned with their Egyptian culture. It is a very hard thing to lose when you have a great family structure and home base to go back to. (My Egyptian friends are very much into their identities as Egyptians)
As far as living in the west. I feel it is a privilege to be able to get exposure and experience. What is done with the exposure/experiences is entirely upto what the person chooses to make of it. Not everyone can leave the country to make a better or different life for themselves or for their family.
I am not Egyptian but, I do have the privilege to live in the west and be able to do something with my life that I would have had a very difficult time doing in my own country.
AND I want to say Welcome back Pinka....you were missed! |

I could say - because around here there are many, thats very hard to figure out because some of them barbarian, some are greeks, and some are latin by spirit.
So I could say, them are just like us other immigrant or naturalized americans.
Are them wicked?
Not further than any other ethnicity. |
