Hi! No we don't live in secret we live just like anyone else. Most people don't talk religion to strangers when meeting. We are only 2% of the general population and if you live in a "touristy" area then maybe that is also why you've met people from other areas and not Jewish people.
If you have interest to learn more about Jewish people or Judaism then just feel free to ask questions since you know there is a Jewish group online, it's YA and that's what we're here for :) Just be wary of the non-Jewish respondent sometimes they misinform people. Or you can just travel over to the local Chabad Synagogue and talk to an Orthodox Rabbi there even though you are not Jewish they still can explain things to you. Either way no we're not secret we're quite open and honest it just it doesn't really come up all the time in management of day to day affairs. |

The seemingly invisible character is due to the fact that Jewishness is not a matter of ethnicity but of religion; about half are atheist/agnostic and so you would not register anything distinctive about them. On the other hand religious Jews tend to avoid contact with non-jews and the more extreme their version of Judaism the more pronounced the avoidance. Reform jews do not mind association on the job but would probably avoid socializing. Orthodox jews don't want any contact with the 6 billion humans or "gentiles' who aren't of the same faith under any circumstances. |

So in your opinion people should say "hi my name is Abe Seinfeld I'm a Jew" in my 37 years of life I've never met anyone that said "hi I'm Muslim", or , "hi I'm Baha'i", I've met hundreds of Israelis both Muslim and Jews, I've met American Muslims and Jews, I've met people, religion never comes into the picture, I'm not prejudiced., |

Our worldwide population currently numbers approx. 14 million people due to the Holocaust and 1000's of years of forced conversion and slaughter prior to that.
The US has 300 million people and 6 million of them are Jews, so it's very possible you've never met one of us, especially if you've never been to the regions with high concentrations of Jews (i.e. the northeast, FL, CA).
If you have met Jews, you probably didn't know it. Were you looking for hook noses and horns? We look the same as gentiles, believe it or not. |

And just how do you know that none of these people are Jewish? We generally avoid the big sign glued to our foreheads--the adhesive can be a real b*tch to get off. |

no, Jewish people are very proud of who and what they are. |

Their are not many jewish people left in the world. But how many people of other religions do you see everywhere? |

No. But orthodox jews are far more conspicuous than reform jews. At least half of all self-described Jews aren't actually jewish; it isn't an ethnictiy it's a religious affiliation,so so-called "secular jews' aren't any more "jewish" they I am. |

Because you never ask. Most American Christians assume that everyone else is also Christian. They wish all of us a Merry Christmas expecting good wishes in return. I am more than happy to wish Christians a Merry Christmas or Happy Easter, but I always make sure they ARE Christians before doing so!

In your neighborhood I'd imagine they might not admit to being Jewish. |

I live in a flat.
It's quite nice when the sun shines.
The downstairs neighbour knows I'm Jewish, but only because she invites me for Christmas. My workmates know because I have to use a couple days annual leave for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Other people know as, when and if it comes up.
Twenty years is barely any time at all. |

TRYING to live normal lives? Yeah, that's what we do even though we're aliens. Me, I ooze gefilte fish from my pores and I give off a purple glow as I do people's bookkeeping.
We're regular people and yes, we like to be among other Jews just like Christians like to be with other Christians or Muslims w/ Muslims. We understand each other. If I meet someone that's obviously Jewish (dressed frum, for example), I make it a point to say Shalom. I may be wearing jeans and have my head uncovered, but it's still nice to know you're among friends.
You've never met one? Do you live in a cornfield? You've lived over twenty years or so? That explains not having met one... I guess. |

People don't make an announcement. It's just there. There's no secret, but there's no pushing it in people's faces, either. Just think--how often does someone announce their religion to you? Do people go up to you and say "Hi, I'm a Quaker!"? |

I don't know where you live. But in the US I've known lots of Jews over the years. Far from keeping it a secret, they often seem to enjoy talking about it.
One thing I've noted is that, in jobs that have to be covered 366 days a year, Jews often volunteer to work Christmas and Easter, to let the Christians take the day off. Rather nice I think. |

I went through two years of school with a Jew before I found out he was one. He never mentioned it. Fine fellow. Looked just like the rest of us. No signs on his forehead. ( I LOL at that one.) Did not change complexion as we studied in class. Never had a cross word for anyone and was very successful in Diesel mechanics.
He did finally ask me to stop asking him questions about Jews as he was not interested in teaching history. Finding a Jew to talk to in Texas is hard work. They are there though.
Fitting in. |
