Do most Saudi Arabian women wear niqab?

I'll be moving to Saudi Arabia with my Saudi husband and kids in the next couple of years. We'll be living in Jeddah. Do most Saudi women wear niqab? I know that the niqab is not mandatory according to the law there, but is it customary? I really don't mind it either way, I'm just wondering. I do already wear hijab.

Fist poster, that's why I asked in the Saudi Arabia category :-)

Just me
Yes most Saudi women wear niqab. Or cover the eyes.

Jeddah is very liberal though and not really known to be religious.

Haven't been there for a while but I remember that most, or at least and noticeable many, do NOT cover the face there.

They are very different from people say in Riyadh and much more laid back and liberal.

For instance, if a girl here in Riyadh smokes cigarettes, its taboo and so "horrible" its like she did Heroin or something ( yes a horrible exaggeration lol but you get the idea )

The least that can be said is if a girl smoked in front of other girls, her habit would be the topic of discussion.

While in Jeddah its very normal and not hidden from family members. They can sit together with a woman smoking a sheeshah ( hookah ). And its the social norm and "ok" and nothing that would attract attention.

In Riyadh girls like that would be considered.. "bad"

Back to Niqab...

I think its safe to say that when you go to Jeddah you'd feel comfortable in hijab or niqab alike.

Riyadh people go to Jeddah whenever they have short vacations.

yes, the majority of them do, but according to what u said, u'll live in jeddah where alot of women do not wear niqab there
so u don't have 2 wear it :)

[even if u r going 2 live in any other city in KSA, u don't have 2 wear it
i have cousins in riyadh and the eastern province(dammam,khobar,..etc) who don't wear niqab]

hope that helps =)

Talking about Jeddah, it is neither mandatory nor customary. Some women even reveal their hair in public and sometimes they are being bothered by the religious police or whatever they are calling themselves.

This is not the case in other places in Saudi Arabia as deferent ways of thinking and cultures exists. For example, in Al Hasa (which is a big town in eastern province) it is customary for women to cover their faces with a veil (not like niqab) and more and younger girls are just restricting themselves to the hijab.

Anyway, don’t worry about anything as long as your husband supports you and be there with you while traveling outside of Jeddah. Also you really have so little to worry about even if your husband is not around because – as I think – women wearing hijab are not facing any problem even if they are in a city or an area known to encourage its women to cover their faces.

If you talk about the public dress code in Jeddah, yes most of them do wear Hijab. However, it is not unusal at all to see girls without head cover.
If you go to private beaches, they won't wear abaya at all.
So, for yourself, whatever you feel comfortable is fine. Hijab is fine.

If you talk about how many Saudis are really "Mohajaba". Then, then, I don't think anyone would know the real number. But, I would say 50%.
