Do you believe in the power of "Positive Thinking"?

When life gets you down or you face some problems, do you think that a positive attitude is what will get you through the day?

Most definitely, the attitude with which we approach anything in this life has a significant bearing in its outcome.
Self doubt can be a very destructive attitude and is never productive, in fact it could be said that it is counter productive.
To doubt ones self, is to put in doubt everything that you believe in, even your religion.
But as we all experience times of self doubt or feeling down, it is very important to be able to recognise your early warning symptoms and to stop it taking hold of you.
A good exercise when you are feeling one of these downers coming on is to go for a walk and make sure when you walk that you are walking tall.
If necessary pretend you are the queen or king of the world, with your head held high ,shoulders back, and even take longer strides than usual.
Now smile and smile with your eyes as well as your mouth.
Be aware of the people around you and if they return your smile then nod in acknowledgement, soon you will find that your mood begins to alter.
The heavy oppressed feeling of self doubt has lifted and you are ready to move on with you day.
No one is immune from these times when we feel everything we do,say or attempt is ineffectual or worse.
But remember you are worthy, and we sometimes have to experience the dark to really appreciate the light in out lives.
This is because we are only human beings after all,we are not created to be perfect beings.

I think that luxury applies only to a certain economic level group. The people who are dying of hunger or wondering how they're going to pay their rent won't get very far in life/live to see the next day if no actions are attached to positive thinking. It must be hard to think positively if one is in a situation without options and there are many out there. thinking positively might be a defense mechanism or a delusion for people w/ severe obstacles in life.

Hope :-) Hope is good.

I believe in the power of God to flow into me through faith... When "Positive Thinking" = faith, then yes, I do believe in that power.

But when "Positive Thinking" is nothing more than self-positivity while feeling superior to "negative people", then, no, I don't believe in that. Too often I've heard my Mum or step-father say words judging people for not being "positive". That judgment in itself is a negative thought (unhelpful)...

True "positive thinking" stems from LOVE... From the basis of love in our hearts, we can accept people just as they are, loving them because we have faith in the ability of people to rise above their own difficulties, once their needs are met (eg, the need for love, life's necessities, etc).

So, we go about meeting needs... comforting those who mourn, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, encouraging the depressed, healing the sick, etc.

I believe there is power in faith and hope... but there is even more power in LOVE. When truly understanding God's love, that's when we receive the inner feelings that allow us to be positive. So love comes first.

Positive thinking is the result of being loved. Bringing about positivity in other occurs when we LOVE them, and tell them the good things about themselves, in a way that is sincere and acceptable to them.

but talking about it is way easier than really doing it...when u r feeling down ppl keep telling u to think positive...but ur mind is in a mess and blur at that time...
but if u calm down and begin to think gradually of the good things and see the bright side of this situation u're in...it will sure get u through the day...and prevent u from going back to that point that u feel helpless and hopeless

What we focus our energies upon, then grows in our life, so it is we who have to decide what we want to focus on, the flaws of our life, or look for perfection in those very flaws.

As the truth is that we get what we ask for, and it is our vibrations we vibrate at through the day that do all the asking for us, and so they attract experiences to us. No wonder happy people stay happy, crabby people only get more so, just as angry people always attract more experience to get angry about, till we decide to feel differently about same circumstances in our lives.

Now, imagine what experiences, an attitude of gratitude would attract!

So next time you complain, just realize what are you attracting more of, in your life. There would be no point blaming God for that later, as it is we who have to learn to allow well being in, God's abundance for all of us, is infinite.

And that by the way has nothing to do with our economic well being, some of the happiest nations in world are also some of its poorest! It is all in the attitude, stop whining, start living!

Yes, I do believe that thinking positively about some matter can affect the outcome to some degree. To put it negatively, if you think you are going to lose, you likely will do so.

- positive thinking encourage you to keep on and not giving up...

- positive thinking pushes your sub-conscious mind to work together with yourself to achieve what u want

if u indulge in negative thinking, u will face a lot of fear.

If we become slaves to our fears and indulge in self-doubt then we become our own worst enemy.

Is your glass half-empty or half-full? How you answer this age-old question may reflect your outlook on life and whether you're optimistic or pessimistic.

In fact, studies show that these personality traits —optimism and pessimism — can affect how well you live and even how long you live.

Need an attitude adjustment? Find out how to reduce your stress by halting negative thoughts and practicing positive self-talk.

Be positive: Live longer, live healthier

Self-talk is the endless stream of thoughts that run through your head every day. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. If the thoughts that run through your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you're likely an optimist.

Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information.

Researchers continue to explore the effects of optimism on health. The health benefits optimism may provide are:

Decreased stress
Greater resistance to catching the common cold
A sense of well-being and improved health
Reduced risk of coronary artery disease
Breathing easier if you have chronic obstructive lung disease, such as emphysema
Improved coping ability for women with high-risk pregnancies
Living longer
Better coping skills
It's unclear why optimists experience these health benefits. But one theory is that having a positive outlook enables you to cope better with stressful situations, which reduces the effects of stress on your body.

How to put a positive spin on negative thoughts

Self-talk — the inner monologue sometimes referred to as automatic thinking — can be positive or negative. When the theme of your self-talk is mostly negative, your own misperceptions, lack of information and distorted ideas have overpowered your capacity for logic and reason. But if you weed out misconceptions and irrational thinking and challenge them with rational, positive thoughts, your self-talk will gradually become realistic and self-affirming.

Some common forms of irrational thinking are:

Filtering. You magnify the negative aspects of a situation and filter out all of the positive ones. For example, you had a great day at work. You completed your tasks ahead of time and were complimented for doing a speedy and thorough job. But you forgot one minor step. That evening, you focus only on your oversight and forget about the compliments you received.
Personalizing. When something bad occurs, you automatically blame yourself. For example, you hear that an evening out with friends is canceled and you assume that the change in plans is because no one wanted to be around you.
Catastrophizing. You automatically anticipate the worst. You refuse to go out with friends for fear that you'll make a fool of yourself. Or one change in your daily routine leads you to think the day will be a disaster.
Polarizing. You see things only as either good or bad, or black and white. There is no middle ground. You feel that you have to be perfect or you're a total failure.
You can learn to turn negative thoughts into positive ones. The process is simple, but it takes time and practice.

Throughout the day, stop and evaluate what you're thinking. If you find that your thoughts are negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them.

Start by following one simple rule: Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else.

Examples of typical negative self-talk and how you might apply a positive twist include:

Negative self-talk Positive spin
I've never done it before. It's an opportunity to learn something new.
It's too complicated. Let's look at it from a different angle.
I don't have the resources. Necessity is the mother of invention.
There's not enough time. Let's re-evaluate some priorities.
There's no way it will work. I can try to make it work.
I don't have the expertise. I'll find people who can help me.
It's good enough. There's always room for improvement.
It's too radical a change. Let's take a chance.
No one bothers to communicate with me. I'll see if I can open the channels of communication.
I'm not going to get any better at this. I'll give it one more try.
I'm never going to learn how to manage my stress. I'm going to try to learn how to manage my stress.

Practice makes perfect

If you tend to have a negative outlook, don't expect to become an optimist overnight. But eventually your self-talk will automatically contain less self-criticism and more self-acceptance.

Practicing positive self-talk will improve your outlook. When your state of mind is generally optimistic, you're able to handle everyday stress in a realistic and constructive way. That ability may contribute to the widely observed health benefits of being an optimist.

Funny story about the power of positive (or negative!) thinking!

murphy's plough
McGinty, a farmer, needed to plough his field before the dry spell set in, but his own plough had broken.

"I know, I'll ask my neighbour, farmer Murphy, to borrow his plough. He's a good man; I'm sure he'll have done his ploughing by now and he'll be glad to lend me his machine."

So McGinty began to walk the three or four fields to Murphy's farm.

After a field of walking, McGinty says to himself, "I hope that Murphy has finished all his own ploughing or he'll not be able to lend me his machine..."

Then after a few more minutes of worrying and walking, McGinty says to himself, "And what if Murphy's plough is old and on it's last legs - he'll never be wanting to lend it to me will he?.."

And after another field, McGinty says, "Murphy was never a very helpful fellow, I reckon maybe he won't be too keen to lend me his plough even if it's in perfect working order and he's finished all his own ploughing weeks ago...."

As McGinty arrives at Murphy's farm, McGinty is thinking, "That old Murphy can be a mean old fellow. I reckon even if he's got all his ploughing done, and his own machine is sitting there doing nothing, he'll not lend it to me just so watch me go to ruin..."

McGinty walks up Murphy's front path, knocks on the door, and Murphy answers.

"Well good morning Mr McGinty, what can I do for you?" says Murphy.

And McGinty says, with eyes bulging, "You can take your bloody plough, and you can stick it up your bloody ****!"

Oh yess. Definately.
Economics don't play a roll in how you face the problems of the day.
I've seen very very poor people that are the nicest and most friendly people. They don't let their situation get them down. There is no point in it.
if they are depressed and sad they will still wake up the next morning in the same situation only depressed and sad. Which only compounds the problem and prevents you from thinking clearly.
:)
