Do you ever eat on the plane?

I've never eaten while on the plane - irrespective of how long the journey is. I'll be on the plane back home in the next few hours....it's a long haul. They are trying to convince me that I should attempt it this time around, but I'm still not convinced why people eat on the plane. If you do (and other than you were hungry) why can't you wait until you reach your destination than eating in a compressed cabin – with same air being recycled etc?

Haibo...$zim that's why you are so thin..just kidding! Since i get nervous when flying, eating helps me busy . The food on the airplane is yucky..that's why i always chow buns with butter and chips. I once heard that its better to skip the ice on your water or whatever yo drink cause it 80% not good.

Have a nice bumpy flight and make it home safe. Hope you had a great time there.

I gather from your statement that you dislike flying? Well, don't stress Zim$, it will soon be over! Try flying for to New Zealand then youíll know what a long haul is all about, according to itinary it takes 30 hours but because you're going through all those time zones I,m not sure how long it really takes, it's confusing! Emirates serves meals every two hours so you can miss a few if you like but really, you have to eat! Why don't you try watching a movie to distract yourself from thinking about the ""recycled"" air? Happy flying and please, have at least one meal. If not, have every alcoholic drink that passes you by! hahaha!

Mina I eat. I however have had some not so nice experiences with food on the plane. At one of our flights to Mauritius we found a dead cockroach in the salad. I was so upset. The airline (SAA) tried to make up. They even moved us from economy to business class. They also partly refunded us. Since that day, I'm doubtful to eat, but when those hunger pangs arrive, I go for it.

I love the food you get on a plane. :-) Can never understand why people complain. The breakfasts are usually really good, with fruit as sweet as nectar.

Don't fuss, Zim. It is not something that is going to kill you. And if you start getting hang ups about things, you just poison your mind.

Try to see it as one of those things.. just a part of the lifes we live nowadays.

What on earth has the air got to do with it? When I was able to travel business class on Singapore Airlines, the food was some of the best I have ever eaten. At the other end of the scale when I travel on Virgin Blue I buy a beer and a snack and they taste exactly the same as they would on the ground. So go for it enjoy your meal and rest well afterwards

The airlines claim that the air on a plane is safer than that which many of us breathe on the ground - or do you hold your breath for the whole journey?

1, Most food I had on flights were actually quite good. I'm not fussy when it comes to food, though. Cathay has the best food so far.
2. When flying straight from Hong Kong to Jhb (13 hours), its a looooong wait for your next meal if you don't eat on the plane.

Having done this long flight a few days ago, I can honestly say the only reason why I ate is because I was hungry or the food was surprisingly appetising. However I won't eat on a plane again next time, I got sick from the food. I don't want to think of what's in it.

Most of my flights have been long haul flights, like London Oval. When one has already taken up to 2 hours to get to the airport, 2 hours to check-in and board, then one is RATHER hungry, and the dry air makes very thirsty. And when the flight is 13 hours long, plus another 1 to 2 hours before disembarking and collecting luggage, customs etc. I would have died of hunger if I had not eaten anything on the plane.

Besides the food, up till now, being totally edible (I always avoid fish), it is included in the price, and I´m buggered if I will forgo on anything that I have paid for!

As London Oval suggests, pre-order the vegetarian menu, then you are on the safe side. And really, eating on the plane keeps one occupied. Man those Cape Town direct to Dusseldorf, Germany flights are long!! Any pleasant distraction is welcome.

I am very interested how you manage to survive the flight not breathing in any of that recycled air! ??

Sunbeam
It's not the air that bothers me Zim, it's the food itself, I find plane food absolutely disgusting, it is worst than hospital food. Go ahead and try it this time, you will see what I mean.

cmac
I am not sure I see the relationship between eating and recycled air. Do you think it is unsafe??

life1shot1me
I usually eat on the plane but not going to ever ever ever ever again on Mexicana airlines.
I eat because I get so bored that eating keeps me busy at least for a while and why not?

The only reason I eat is because I am bored and usually hate flying. I must admit that I will only eat if the food is tasty. I also enjoy the cheese and biscuits in business class. The best however is having either your wine/whiskey or beer and watch a movie especially on long hall flights.

Enjoy the flight my man and come back safe.

Jaco W
Like Blue ull said, it's a way of filling the time. The food may not be 5 star but you paid or it so why not eat it? By the way, welcome back in our sunny country. You might even make Zuma's latest wedding :)

I prefer to not eat on the plane short or long flights. I drink plenty of water and occasionally fruit juice. The reason for not eating is the fear of vomiting and the rest that goes with being sick. I do not know much about the recycled air, but recycled sounds 2nd best. I suppose we must live with it if using planes to reach our destination.
Have a save flight and do what you feel is best for you.

Now Zim,

Please explain why eating in recycled air is any different from breathing it?

On a long haul flight it is necessary to eat especially these days - they don't allow you to take even bottled water into the airport, never mind food and sustenance is necessary.

The food can be iffy but just ask for the vegetarian option - usually much more interesting and unlike Darth I quite enjoy the adventure of opening all the pots and things. It amuses me !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a great flight and travel home safely.

What does it matter that you are on a plane - its just regular food.

The air or altitude has no effect on the food.

Air on a plane is not constantly recirculated - it is constantly replaced by the cabin pressurisation and air conditioning system. If it wasn't the oxygen won't last very long in a full plane with hundreds of people breathing.

We do, in our country. I suppose I wouldn't eat either if I was anywhere near where you are.
