Yes, it happened to me when I came first to Lebanon. I used to think they are insulting me or talking about how do I look. But now I am used to it (I can understand a bit).

And if the other person is not talking to you, and the conversation is private... Who are you to tell people what language to talk?

I do understand your question very well, but I do not know where your problem is. First for all: Lebanon is not english!

If I have an Indian coworker talking to his Indian wife, why the heck should he talk english. So that I can understand?

I only would call it disrespectull if I sit togehter with other people and they would leave me out by only talking their language. But a private phone call - it's none of my business and I do not care how their language sounds. Maybe I should wonder how my home language sounds in other ears? Mayby clocky clacky?

If your coworker is on the phone, you shouldn't be listening anyway. They are having a personal conversation.

yes i get irritated but not when my co worker speaks in his foriegn tongue over the phone but when someone like you sticks beside me while im talking on the phone! its not disrespectful at all! everyone is free to talk whatever language he/she wants on the phone! plus its disrespectful to listen to your coworkers conversations on the phone, maybe he's talking something personal, and dont want u to know or understand! i do it all the time, and never had problems with any of my co workers!

Not too many of our staff speak English properly.... even in an English speaking country....hard enough to understand the younger generation ..they talk as if they are writing a text message !
Only disrespectful if it's deliberately done in front of co workers ...I watch the body language & try to read the signs .

I consider it disrespectful to listen in on other peoples phone conversations, no matter what language they may use. I also consider it disrespectful when someone listens in on my phone conversations. I get irritated when people talk to me and try to pretend they do not understand English when I know they do. I irritate the **** out of some of my co-workers when they start speaking in their foriegn language (which I understand perfectly well) and I subtly let them know I understand every word they are saying. If it irritates you, learn their language... this is your problem, not theirs...

I think it's ok...it doesn't necessarily mean that they're talking about you...so just ignore them when they do that

You have self-esteem issues...it's a personal call. If they were talking to someone right next to you...pointing at you...laughing in another language...then i would say EHHHH...i understand. But not when she's on the phone talking to a friend or her mom. it's like if you were talking to your mom in your mother tongue...people should go report you...

No, it doesn't bother me, because I do it, too. :)
I think people are just afraid of the unknown...you know, not all languages can be used to express every thought you have equally, sometimes it's easier to say something in your own language then it is in English.

i consider a phone talk some private, not something for everybody.
So...it is not my business to know what they are saying to the person talking to them. Wht do you want to have some idea what they are talking about????
Do you care???? I consider to watch them and hear their conversations.....GOSSIP !!!! Is good to know that ......next time.if you are around, i'll talk spanish ...
