The King David Hotel bombing (July 22, 1946) was a bomb attack against the British Mandate government of Palestine and its armed forces by members of the Irgun, a militant Zionist organization, which was led at the time by Menachem Begin, a future Prime Minister of Israel.

Members of the Irgun, commanded by Yosef Avni and Yisrael Levi [1] and dressed as Arabs and as the Hotel's distinctive Sudanese waiters, planted a bomb in the basement of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, part of which was being used as the base for the Mandate Secretariat, the British military headquarters and a branch of the police Criminal Investigation Division. 91 people were killed, most of them staff of the secretariat and the hotel: 28 British, 41 Arab, 17 Jewish, and 5 other. Around 45 people were injured.

The attack on the hotel was the deadliest attack against the British in the history of the Mandate and is often credited as being a major factor in the British decision to relinquish the Mandate. If classed as terrorism, the attack was the most deadly one of that kind anywhere until the 1980s, when the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing and the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which blew up over Lockerbie in Scotland, occurred.

To Gamla Joe- It may well be true that other Jewish groups condemned the acts. It is also true that major Muslim organizations condemn Hamas' attacks on Israeli civilians. It's all a matter of who wants to listen to whom. If a person is prejudiced, he makes assumptions. He will assume that the entire group that he is prejudiced against supports an act, instead of looking for what others of the group have said against it. That can be said of both Jews and Muslims, as well as people of all other groups.

The British military command and the British Criminal Investigation Division were headquartered at the King David building. You neglected to mention a few well known facts about this episode. No less than 3 warning phone calls were placed to ensure that civilians would not be harmed! The British Army Headquarters there were among those notified and warned in advance, but --unbelievably-- chose not to evacuate the building; "We don't take orders from the Jews," they said.
Years later, ". . . a member of the British Parliament introduced evidence that the Irgun had indeed issued the warning. He offered the testimony of a British officer who heard other officers in the King David Hotel bar joking about a Zionist threat to the headquarters. The officer who overheard the conversation immediately left the hotel and survived."
It would be nice if certain actual terrorist groups would give us advance warnings and a chance to evacuate. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened.
