1. Giving up land "for peace" has NEVER gained anything for Israel
2. The land is not man's to give away
3. Because it is time for Israel to say "No, you will not come any further! This land was mandated to the people of Israel by G_D Himself and only HE can divide it.

I find it perhaps somewhat telling no one supporting the return actually addressed the issue. They somehow tied it to the Palestinian issue, and spouted phrases like "greedy Zionists". The way I see it is, Syria is simply not trustworthy and the Golan is simply too important. Israel made peace with Egypt and gave a way a huge section of land, but that was because Egypt was trustworthy. It was (relatively) democratic, and was open to influence from the West. Syria however is neither of those things; it is in fact heavily influenced by Iran.
For those who don't know (and that seems to be many of you), the Golan is of supreme importance to the region. It is a natural barrier to invasion (which Syria did thrice in 25 years), as well as providing a vantage point for reconaissance reasons. While the Heights were in Syrian hands, mortar and artillery shellings were a relatively common occurence for Israelis living in the north. Syria has yet to provide ANY assurance that that type of behaviour wouldn't resume. Instead, Syria seems to be posturing for war. Signing a defensive pact with Iran doesn't help international relations.
The Golan also happens to contain the headwaters of leading into the Sea of Galilee or Lake Kinneret. This is pivotal for Israels water concerns, and Syria has previously attempted to sabotage Israel's water supply.
Peace with Syria is just too unrealistic to consider giving something as important as the Golan. Maybe someday.

I can't see it happening. Syria want the golan heights and the canarit lake which is Israels biggest water supply. Plus one of the reasons Israel took the golan heights is becuase they used to get fired at from the mountains.

Olmerts support is too unstable for him to concede any land. he would be out the door immediately

No, I don't. Israel has been attacked so many times by the Arabs, they deserve any land they can hold. Syria lost Golan Heights in the 6 Day War (1967). Had they not attacked Israel, Israel would not have taken it. People conveniently forget that. Israel was going to give back the West Bank, until they were attacked, yet again. No matter what Israel does, they will still be attacked for not being Arab. If they concede Golan Heights and other "occupied territories", they will just have to take them back in another war. Arabs will not rest until Israel no longer exists. Pray for Israel.

Why should Israel give the Shebaa farms back to Lebanon? It never belonged to Lebanon. The Shebaa Farms belongs to Syria -- and Syria will get that land back when they agree to peace with Israel. That's how United Nations Resolution 242 works.

Wow, I'm just amazed at people's lack of awareness of historical fact!

Israel did not 'seize' the Golan Heights; she was under attack from the Syrians; they used the Golan to fire on Israeli kibbutizm and they slaughtered many Israelis this way.

Israel got the Golan during a war - a war that Israel didn't start! So, what, Israel is meant to return land to her enemies when they have publicly stated that all they want is to destroy Israel and murder her people??! What nation on earth would ever give land back under these circumstances???

Israel tried to return the Golan in exchange for peace, and what happened? She got attacked, AGAIN. So basically Israel cannot win. Whatever she does, she gets attacked.

I am just glad that there is talk on both sides, of compromises for peace. I think G-d is hearing our prayers and is giving our leaders the compassion to make peace. Hardened hearts make no progress. We need to get the peace in action, and hopefully encourage otters to do the same. Imagine a world of peace for a change, how nice that would be!

We were told in our studies last week, that Israel really need not give any Land to any body. Abraham was made " Father " Of it ''all'. God Gave it to Him To Keep. I believe Israel Is trying so Hard to Make Peace. And it will never happen. However, God says: If we curse Israel, He will curse us.......If we Bless Israel, He will Bless Us. That is Pretty Plain Talk, HUH?

1) It's the source of a significant portion of Israel's drinking water.

2) It would give the Syrians and any terrorist groups that they support a tremendous vantage point overlooking all of northern Israel. They would be able to easily attack/spy on anywhere in northern Israel from there.

I hope Israeli makes peace to just give Golan back to Syria, practically all the people who live there r syrians anyways, Israel has conquered enough land just give back what is unrightfully hers.

As for Olmert speaking of "conceding" the Golan Heights...wow. Is anyone as unimpressed as I am?
The Golan Heights is NOT Israel's to concede, any more than the West Bank is Israel's. The are OCCUPIED, and Israel is the only nation in the Middle East occupying land that doesn't belong to them. Israel has been ignoring UN Mandate 242 for over forty long years now, with the help of the US government and the unwilling assistance of the US taxpayer.
