Do you think Islam needs reform and modernization?

No, I don't think that Islam need reform and modernization. People I have met seem pretty reform and modern to me.

Take Hopeless and Mimi for example, they are the loveliest girls I have met in the whole world and I don't even know them in person.

Hopeless: Great answer!!
I am not a Muslim, so it would be arrogant of me to answer this question. I just want to point out that, as an orthodox Jew, if someone would ask me whether or not my religion should be modernized, I would be offended.....

MBC
You can't reform what is already set. In other words, you can't come along and make things halal (permissible) or haram (prohibited) that have already been decreed in the Quran. But there is always room for a reevaluation of the principles laid forth in the Quran and how they apply to our current circumstances. That happens continuously, as it does in other faith traditions, and that is is a necessity. So if by reform and modernization you mean finding ways to understand the Quran while addressing the complexities of modern scientific and ethical issues, then yes, it certainly needs that. But if you mean by reform and modernization that we should disregard clearly established commandments of Islamic Law contained in the Quran such as the prohibition of drinking alcohol or eating pig meat because it is "modern" to do so, then the answer must always be for any believing Muslim, unequivocally, no.

...And the people who answer this will most probably base their information on the same anti-Islamic propaganda that is fed to them through the bias, skewed, misleading media. What's the point?

I consider myself a modern muslim woman. Perhaps if you put your question in the Ramadan catagory you will have many more replies. Here in the Israel section I don't know how the replies are going to be. Let's hope they are postive. Peace!

Also if you could plz expand your question: Modernize how? Have you seen major Arab cities? They are more modern than cities in the west. Muslims have cars. Mobile phones. There is a large population of converts who keep their original culture, (parts of it) like myself and many others. Cheers!

Free Palestine
Most of the Muslims except lets say for the Saudi are pretty modern.
But Israel surely need to reform their thinking of how to treat human beings correctly

oh honey
i think that the ''modern'' Muslims who are using the name of god to kill need a reform, istead.
Islam is a good and peaceful religion.

Shay p
Islam is peaceful religion, problem is with the people practicing it.
People that practice it will kill in it's name call for blood shed in it's name stump on other countries flag in its name and so on.

Gamla Joe
If reform and modernization means less violence in the world, then yes I am all for it.

But seeing as I am not Muslim it is not my place to tell them what exactly needs reform. My only hope is that it will lead to less violence.

Actually it's Judaism that needs reform and modernization.
Any religion that believes in an eye for an eye will never live in peace with it's neighbors.

Well, Catholic religion also needs urgent reforms and modernizations... but we do not have to debate about it, because this religion does not influent in politics and Christian religions are just religions and not the law of a country...
(Women do not get stoned because of having sex before or out of marriage... although Catholic believes do condemn that conducts).
Ultra Orthodox Judaism is something very strange for me and I do not understand or support it, even though I am Jewish myself. But it’s the way of life and way of thinking of this religious group and as long as their way of living Judaism does not limit or disturb normal life of the rest of the Israelis.
(And of course they do not throw bombs to achieve their purposes...)
Islam is different, as Islamic laws rule many countries and these laws are taken out of the Koran.
The problem with Islam is the interpretation of the religion not the religion itself, as Islam prays peace but men twist the holey words around to use them in their excuse to preach hate and excuse and legalize violence...
So I would say that the people do need a secular educational system and secular politics, as religion should be a private matter and not the law of a country.
There are a lot of differences between Muslim countries, for example Turkey has a secular government, where the government and laws are completely separated from the religion.
Morocco is a very open country, where people can live the way they like.
The urgent question is, what to do with these countries which openly support terrorism and hide terrorists, where Imans preach hate and destruction, where the government knows about terrorist training cams and even supports them, where radical Islamic schools exists (which are the only possibility to provide a minimum of education to the poor, as they are free of charge)...
It’s not a problem of Islam and it’s just stupid to condemn Islam as a "hate religion" or as a religion, which is violent.
There do not exist violent religions, there do exist violent persons who use religion for their own proposes to gain power and money.
Nowadays life really isn’t easy for any Muslim in Europe and USA, as they are always treated like suspicious, like possible terrorists and are branded as outcasts.
So this behaviour towards innocent people who just want to live in peace and practice their religion in a respectful way is very big insult.
This way people are forced to live in a society apart.
We shall start to get to know people for what they are not giving importance which religion somebody has.

I am a moderate Muslim and believe Islam does need reform and modernization. But I also feel that many other religions need considerable reform and modernization, too.

It has been tried and in the end never works. There is always at some point a revival of extremism.

I think islam just needs to go away. Its caused enough pain and suffering

Nice as the prospect of reforming and modernizing Islam is, I do not see it happening prior to Y'shua's re-seizure of the earth in the name of the Sovereign LORD of Hosts. In fact, with brushfire wars escalating at both ends of the Fertile Crescent, I see a reactionary trend within Islam, consistent with the conditions that brought the First Crusade.

From available news sources, Osama Binladin strikes me as consistent with the maximum-enforcement rule imposed by one of the first Turkic Muslim regimes to appear, as contrasted with the tolerance of the Arab regime that the Turks displaced. The several Quranic schools headquartered at Meqah have different approaches to politics, and Binladin is most consistent with the al-Wahab, whose imperialist tendencies are traceable directly to Muhammad and his followers when they struck at all comers from Madinah--a guerilla war better documented elsewhere.

I think they need to get back to basics . Look at the game plan, ( Koran) pull out all the rules about killing and maiming and oppressing. Admit that Moe was a raving lunatic and start all over again.

Bring it on girls.

anita sounds like any religion is fine as long as it doesn't interfer with your social life.
