Do you think its okay for a non-Muslim woman to wear the Hijab?

I am an American Christian woman, but am very inspired by the modesty, and purpose of covering the hair with a veil. The Hijab to me is a very beautiful reminder of a womans rights to modesty which was respected by every religion for centuries.I am thinking of wearing the Hijab but my family and friends do not support me in the idea. They do not like the idea of me being mistaken for a Muslim because they have the ignorant and wrong idea that Islam is a religion of hate, and that women in Islam are oppressed and treated like second class citizens.I have been reading about Islam and have seen that nothing can be farther from the truth.I do not want to disrespect Muslim people by wearing a Hijab,I do not want to wear it as a fashion statement or to mock anyone.Simply my heart draws me to modesty and the beauty of the Hijab. The Hijab meaning just to cover the hair in case some people confuse Hijab with the Burka which is the complete covering and I am not talking about that here.

I've seen a lot of non-muslim women wearing a scarf over their heads in different countries. They weren't oppressed or confused for muslims. It's just a scarf for modesty's sake as you say, or to protect the hair from humidity, sun, cold or even rain.
I'd say: Go for it!
It's your choice and maybe when your family actually sees you, they'll be convinced with your point of view.
Remember, it isn't the dress that oppresses women!

Zoser
Sorry, Do you think (or your family) think that Hijab is invented by Muslims ??,, Women were covering their hair, and even faces when they go out maybe till just 150 years ago in Europe.. and actually covering the hair , is required by Judaism , Christianity,, (do not you see Nuns?).. Actually covering the hair of MAN is required by Judaism,, (the yamakah/ hut...etc) if people doing that, just only in Synagogues or charges,, because they are more into life than in religions,,that is it,, (Hijab for women/ covering the head for men are codes in the three Abraham religions,,,)
Anyway,, you can wear whatever you want, and if you care that people will confuse you with muslims( I do not really know what is the problem, are they the children of the black duck???),, you can wear a big cross,,,,or David star,,with it to indicate your religion,,

Hope
Hijab is not just a dress requirement for Muslims, nor is it a fashion statement, its a way of life. Hijabies have to be modest and act in a calm and dignified manner. They should truly represent Islam's true picture.

And as a muslim, i will not be offended by u wearing what you like. Its yr choice and i have seen a lot of my catholic and orthodox friends wear a black lace scarf to church. Go for it, there is nothing wrong with wanting to preserve yr rights and dignity.

Your wearing a scarf to cover your hair is not Hijab. Go for it.

Yes it's Ok.

All women, no matter what their religion is should be modest.

Your family should learn to live with it, if that's your choice

CJ
nothing wrong with that

it ur choice

even muslim girls and women sometimes they dont wear it

it ur choice

good luck

Name Here
Yes Of Course! It's your choice completely and i respect the fact that you want to respect your self. There is nothing wrong with wearing it, non muslim women actually do wear it. Why is it that if it is religious, it is oppresion? Why is it that if it is fashion then it is cool?

AJ
hi there.. what Zoser said is right....umm..about it not just being Muslim...but I think he doesn't realize how many people don't know...like KLIP who incorrectly answered above

Tell your family to read the Bible's Old Testiment....It clearly advises women to cover the hair, other parts of the Bible advise you not to eat pork..(same as Islam and Judaism)

By the way...where do you think Catholic nuns got the idea to hear a "habit" (head covering)
the word "habit" is said to have originated from the word "hijaab"

I encourage you to know that all religions have women who cover themselves. Christians, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Hindi, Bahai.....etc..

And as a Muslima I embrace your desire to do so. I hope that the rest of your clothing would reflect modesty also..as sometimes is not even found among Muslim women.

It is tragic that one must ask such a question. Dress however you wish.

Awesome question. I'm a Christian guy so I don't feel qualified to answer in any real capacity but it sounds like your heart is for the Muslim women and a heart towards modesty as well. I would guess they would understand and respect that.

why would it matter? people may see it for religious purposes, but if you see it as a fashion sense, that shows some actual originality and uniqueness. including the fact you dont care what people think

Judy
God Bless you...that's all i can say :)

Why not? It is your choice.

It is really a good idea,of course wear the hijap and don't look after the people.Do the thing that you love it and that make you happy...............

Skye
Go for it hon. It's totally okay. You got to do what feels right for you. If you want to do this for modesty, self respect, and as an example to other people of what a woman should be like, don't you let anyone dissuade you from it. This is your choice. You have every right in the world dress modestly and demand the respect you deserve as a woman.

I think your visions of modesty are so admirable, you are going to be an example and inspiration to so many people.

I wish you the very best. :)

If you believe in something you can follow it. The headscarf is not a symbol of islam as in the cross for christianity (sorry klip, thats wrong). many people mistake it for so. Nuns, catholics, christians etc were wearing a headscarf before Islam, although it is a common misconception as Klip has made which you cant ignore. What he says is right in the sense of peoples assumptions, although it is not a true fact that hejab is a symbol of anything. People will mistake you for so because of their misunderstanding. however that does not take it away from the fact that its YOUR choice.
Im glad you feel the way you do about the hejab, if there were people more understanding as you perhaps there would be so much less hate lol.

Go for what yuo believe, perhaps u are being drawn towards Islam too.

Anyway whatever ur reasons etc. you do what pleases you. You only have ur self to answer too. As a muslim women who wears a hejab i would not feel insulted by you.

You should just cover your hair, but not with Hijab and pertend to be something that you are not.

If you are Christian, I think you are insulting your own religion by wearing a symbol of another religion. Because that is what the hijab is, it is a symbol of Islam to people who wear it. Nothing to do with what Islam is about or anything, but I think wearing it would insult both religions. Would a Muslim wear the cross? Plus, modesty does not come from covering your hair. Your culture has developped in a different way. Respect your own past, that is how you respect every culture. You could wear a scarf in the mode yourown ancestors used to wear it. In Greece, women used to wear lovely scarves that don't look like hijabs. Find the equivalent traditional head covering where you come from.
