I do know that the Wcup is acting as an important pillar for society and economy in SA at the moment.
If that had to be taken away we would see a faster slide in standards towards the rest of sub-Saharan Africa.
My main problems with the Wcup are:
a) the negligence associated with portraying SA as "the place to be" - we must be more responsible in the way that we market SA or alternatively we will have blood on our hands!
My point being - Education for tourists on how to keep safe during their stay??
b) other more important infrastructure and public services projects could be initiated from that massive budget,
c) the potential money to be generated from this Wcup will only end up going into the pockets of a small minority of mostly ANC elite?
I'm correct in saying that the Wcup was taken away from Columbia and given to Mexico?
So anything is still possible, there's still time to go and plenty of people the ANC can p!ss off in the mean time. |

Would love for it to be in Australia, but look, if South Africa says that they can do it, then they should be given that opportunity, no questions asked, unless they give it up themselves due to political turmoil.
Behind schedule is a poor excuse to take away the world cup from a place. Remember the Olympics? Two or three months before they said that Greece was no where near finishing the preparations for the games, but in the end it turned out to be a wonderful event with no problems! |

Alf, I will not pretend I know everything about this FIFA world cup thing. But, the Germans are already there in SA supervising things so that it all progresses at an European pace and not at an African pace. So the South Africans have got a jerk on already.
When the World Cup was held in Germany, there was also a problem with crime, albeit not such a HUGE one. BUT, the German police had support from their European colleagues. When the British teams played, for example, there were hundreds of British policeman to support the Germans. And so I would like to believe that South Africa will also be having plenty of support from police forces from Europe etc.
I reckon it is going to be touch and go. The SA government, be it under Thabo or Jacob, fully realises what negative implications SA could have if all does not go according to plan. They are going to hang on to this with all their might, and let´s be positive that (well, I was going to say ´n boer maak ´n plan - a farmer makes a plan) South Africa can manage to pull it off. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Miracles can still happen, even when Mary Poppins is not around! We can talk again in a year´s time, and see whose predictions were closer. |

It's been a source of doubt for ages now... but given recent events... it's back in the news.
Personally I hope it is. Even the Chief of Police in South Africa had his car fitted with automatic flame-throwers cause of crime.
I kid you not. |

This is an on going debate and i guess the proof will be in the pudding. I see the work being done, especially on the Gautrain and it does seem to be moving along. And there havent been any strikes this month so we'll have to wait and see. But FIFA does have its back up in place already and isnt it supposed to be the country which hosted it last? |

1st/ we must believe that sport brings peace.
2nd/ zuma will no doubt profit from the world cup, but what politician has not taken full advantage when one has arisen?
3rd/ zuma is a popular leader for the down trodden majority and concocted propaganda is not new either. |

I live in South Africa and actually hope that they move it somewhere else. So much money has been spent already on stadiums and transport systems, think they should rather concentrate on the poor and on the electricity shortage. The crime situation has been out of control for years now and getting worse. I dont think this country is ready to hold such a big event. I also think that the newspapers will be full of stories like muggings, rapes, hi-jackings and foreigners being murdered. Just rather save us the embarrassment and move it to Australia! |

hi.
personally I don't think so. i don't see it possible: we are almost in 2008 and there are a lot of bonds you can't break so easily. |

South Africa is ill-equipped to host something on the scale of the Soccer World Cup - using the Rugby and Cricket WC's as benchmarks was a complete mistake.
For myself I hope FIFA come to a decision sooner rather than later ... SA won't be ready. |

Its possible and to be honest although a beautiful land to visit on holiday (anyone who has been knows its very easy on the eye as a landscape and the wines and sun etc) but in reality such a big tournament needs to be in a safe environment with a good public transport system and low crime rate and for people of all ages and both genders to feel safe without fear of being car jacked, mugged etc - In my oppinion it should be moved to the USA as they already have the facilities in place and could host it well |

Well....we will have to wait and see what Fifa does, but I doubt if its going to happen and if its not just a reporter of the scotsman stirring....why didn't they get comment from one of the FIFA people at least to support this allegation?

Well Alf if you are right I believe that will be the beginning of the end. |

I can't wait to see what happens during 2010. Everybody is preparing themselves for the world cup. But guys SA has hosted both the Rugby and Cricet world cups without a problem and yes the fooball world cup is bigger, but I think it will be alright. Call me an optimist, I honestly think that SA can al they have to do is just get their house in oder to be able to have guest, or at least predent. So the patriot in me forces me to belive that we can and I just hope and pray with all fingures crossed that we can indeed, pull it off |

Alf, your nauseating attacks on our country are getting under our skin. I don't like Zuma but I am not going to write off SA yet. We need conrstructive comments not gloating by a sick racist who seems to WANT all of this to happen so he can prove himself write.
