Do you think that Obama can achieve peace in the Middle East?

Can he persevere where Clinton failed? Or will this issue not be on the agenda during his first term?
Additional Details
Katherine L: I guess you don't remember in late 1999 when Clinton met with Ehud Barak (PM), and Yasser Arafat for 3 days in a "love fest" at Camp David. Arafat was offered 95% of the West Bank and refused to sign. Clinton was pissed and Barak was ousted shortly thereafter for offering too much for the Israeli people's liking.

He sure can but you need to wait a few more days. The Messiah will end the war in Iraq by Thursday, the economy by Friday, get his aunt legal by Saturday, and then achieve world peace by Sunday.

I think that the Middle East must achieve peace in the Middle East, and that Obama can only try to be as positive an influence as possible. It will undoubtedly be on his agenda, the situation cannot be ignored or put to one side. There are generations of hatred at work in the region, however Obama represents the best chance America has had in a long time to turn around the widespread hostility felt towards the US in some Middle Eastern countries, especially after the Iraq invasion.

MysteryMan09
There has never been peace in the Middle East since the beginning of time.

doobster
He could begin the process ,but it would take the change of heart from many to achieve

After what the Jews have done to these people my friend, I believe that the Jews must make some huge steps back.
And pay handsomely in compensations for the innocent children they have taken the life away so brutally and Nazi-like.
I believe that no Jewish person has to be asked about any of this.
They Jews have no right in to be in a discussion so crucial like this.
The World is Pro-Palestinian and Mr. Obama is part of this world.
We are all Palestinians this time around my friend, even the President of the United States.

I think Obama will fare orders of magnitude better with diplomacy in the region than Bush, and his call for ending our oil dependency could mean less US interest and thus less conflict in the future.

Ultimately though the reason the middle east is such a powder keg is because of the culture there - there's a massive disparity in wealth between the rich in the poor, and the poor have been turning to Islam instead of calling for education and social change. There's nothing Obama can do about that until the people themselves want it - it's not like you can force different values down their throats.

mgonzalez0926@sbcglobal.net
I THINK OBAMA CAN DEFINATELY ACHIEVE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST eventually! hopefully ^.^

ornella
i don't know he needs to work it out with who ever is the president there and i believe in obama he will change things and hopefully bring peace in the middle east!

He's off to a good start with continuing the strikes in Pakistan. You need to carry a big stick to be respected in the Middle East.

Katherine L
where CLINTON failed? Don't you mean bush?
and no offense but do u listen to any of his speeches? Achieving piece in the middle east is a big part of his plan.

Teez
obama is so overrated

i voted for him, but overrated.

yea i can and i believe so he will

I think that there are many oppinions.

But mine is that I think Obama can achieve anything if he puts his mind to it.

Please... other answerers be respectful to the Obama lovers

No, and if he does I think it will be at the demise of the core values that this country was built on. I think that the USA would be the ones have to compromise, to a fault.

Nope.

Why does the Middle East not like the US so much? Unconditional support of Israel. Why does the Middle East not like Israel? I think you know, Arieh.

Obama's thoughts are, "I support Israel. Period". That thinking does not achieve peace. It disregards everyone else's suffering.

So no, he won't. I thought he was different. But in the end, they are all mere puppets.

THERE WILL NOT BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST UNTIL THE ARABS LOVE THEIR CHILDREN MORE THAN THEY HATE THE JEWS!

I don't believe that he will. It is Biblical that the Antichrist is who instigates the peace agreement when he is in power (Revelation 13). And Barack Obama does not fit the bill for being the Antichrist.

I think anyone who believes that Obama or anyone else can achieve peace in the Middle East in this day and time hasn't read the Bible.

If Obama does anything it will be to push the Middle East closer to all out war again. That is, unless there are more secrets to his background than already suspected and he confirms a 7 year covenant between Israel and its enemies.

yes if there was a president that could Obama would be him...it shows that America is truly a free Nation and is tollernt of all pepole and now they can relly see it when we elected a black precedent.

now personally...we need to go into Afghanistan and DESTROY all the Taliban 1st. like Biden said to Obama "things are going to get worse before they get better.

No hatred is very deep. They teach hate at an early age.

I don't think it's on the agenda at all.

His key people are Zionists, which means we're looking at a continued push, (though probably less overt than had we been cursed with a McCain presidency), to see Iran plundered and the various lands around Israel absorbed. Many in Washington have been sold on the notion that Israel is an over-seas American state, a foothold and bulwark against the specter of Asian control of oil in the Middle East. --Not to mention a key brick in the whole Christian apocalypse mythos.

And anyway, Pakistan is at the top of his list of declared targets. U.S. drone ships have already killed Pakistani civilians in missile attacks since his inauguration, although this could arguably be attributed to momentum carried from the Bush admin.

But either way, I don't think we're going to see peace in the Middle East under an Obama administration, and we knew this months ago. I can understand why people might have expected something different, but the facts were in plain view in this case. --Though, I admit, I'd hoped against hope that I was mis-reading the signs.

This isn't a question of Obama, or Clinton or Bush. This is a much a question of the middle east, they live in a society of 2000 years of war, they live in a society where your either willing to die for your beliefs or your weak. If you want to bring peace then it will take a change of their moral values, which would be like me trying to convince the 80% of America (I'm assuming it's still about 80% of American's that aren't atheist) that atheism is the only way to true 'enlightenment'.

well i probaly think so although the presidency might go to his head since hes the 1st black president

Doubt it. He might just make it worst.

K izzle
what kind of a question is this?
isn't everyone sick of talking about the presidents yet?
maybe he will maybe he wont
i think it's his problem. he's either going to fix things or not. thing is he's going to have to pick up after Bush and fix all of those mistakes so it's probably not going to be for a while that Obama can actually help to fix anything.

Why does everyone think that it is America that will achieve peace in the middle east. America is not a middle eastern country and it is not the world police.

America should stop interfering in places where they are not wanted.

EDIT: to the austin powers guy. you don't think Iraq and Iran are in the middle east? read this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_east#Usually_considered_Middle_Eastern

I shagged her rotten, yeah!
Are you kidding? His election makes Nuclear war in the Middle east MORE likely, because the balance of power has been upset and the theory of Mutual Assured Destruction that has governed the Middle East since 1973 is now gone. There has not been a real war there since the Yom Kippur War. All this gaza/Lebanon stuff was just the minor-leagues. Since 1973, the Arab countries have known that if the poo really hits the fan and they invade Israel like they did in the Six day war and the Yom Kippur war, the US will defend Israel militarily when the chips are down. Thats WHY Egypt and Jordan finally made peace. That's why Syria and Israel have not gone to war in over 35 years. But Israel's enemies know it's open season on Israel now. They know that Barack Hussein Soetoro Obama will never commit US combat troops to defend Israel. Barry will surely let israel be consumed, and they know it. So, sometime in the next 4 years, look for a Muslim Military Alliance to form against israel in an attempt to finally win this thing while they have a friend in the White House. Israel will likely use Nuclear Weapons. Elections often have unintended consequences and this will be one of them.
