I know this issue i am suffering daily from it as i am from the few % of Muslims that is not veiled , i suffer from harassment in the street regardless to my wear , i suffer from daily preaching in my collage from" Monaqabat"!
No the veil isn't an indicator, and i know non veiled girls better than those who wear it , I live besides (ma3had El Khidma ) and another Azhar school and i see lots of veiled girls who show no respect to the Islam or its rules and they r even wearing the "Isdal", u know what i mean by those rules!
I Was judged by my exposed hair from Muslim radicals who cursed me , and from the irony that in the final exams i see some of those preachers cheating!
Finally what I want to say is my relation with God is my own business which i don't like anyone to interfere or influence it ,and when i wear Hijab , i' ll do it to please Allah , not to get married as some of them claim "that man can date any non veiled girl but when he wants to marry he will choose the veiled woman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I heard this bull sh!t from a medical student studying in Azhar university! he thought that by this way he will persuade me to wear the veil , but when i heard that i attacked him and his ill thoughts which allowed him to manipulate non veiled girls to exploit them and then throw them like a trash! |

Freedom of speech and expression goes in two directions. Alot of people misunderstand freedom. They believe that freedom implies that women are free to take off their veil. However, freedom also implies that women are free to wear veil with all its kinds.
I understand what you mean. You mean to say that "appearances" are not important. And that many veiled women are not that religious. I agree with you, but many "unveiled' women are not religious too. If we are going to believe in the importance of freedom, then we should understand it right. Everybody is free to wear or take off whatever they want to as long as they don't bug people to do the same.
The reason I am interested in this thing is that the same principle applies to the "beard" and the whole men outfit. When I was young, I used to repeat the saying" Bearded men are not necessarily religious". Now I just believe that everybody is free. That's all |

Well it all depends on the person you are talking about, because i am muslim and i dont go to the extreme with covering my face, but i wear a hijab, and i am proud, and a practicing muslim!
p.s.- Some women/mothers force other muslim girls to wear the hijab and i think they should make their decision because the hijab is not manditory but is strongly encouraged.

No, not all veiled women are really religious. I expect more than 60 % of Egyptian females are veiled regardless of Susan Mubarak's marathon. Simply the (true veil) is one rule or part of Islam and many females are trying to practise it. Some females would like to be like the majority while they don't understand enough about Islamic rules, but still they are Muslims not angels.
In Iran they wear veil similar to the Gulf countries which is part of the culture while they are not angels and not everybody are real good Muslims.
I don't see any problem when most females in a Muslim country wear their veil while they can exercise, sing, act or work normally.
In some countries they are pushed not to wear it, in some others they are pushed to wear it. In Egypt no pushing in all cases. |

I arrived back in Egypt yesterday, and yes I'm so very happy to be "home" again.
While we were having a coffee before leaving the airport I saw a rather strange sight.
Two girls around 16-18 walked into the cafe wearing long skirts and hijab. But, what drew my attention were the words
"I'M SEXY" emblazoned in large silver letters on the front of a very tight T shirt one of them was wearing. She was a rather buxom lass as well!
Not to be outdone, her friend was wearing a top. with"I ,(then a big gold heart under it) meaning love" 50 CENT".
My guy hasn't seen me in a while, but I laughed as he couldn't help his eyes also go into automatic zoom their way,and his line of sight was certainly not levelled at their faces.
I have spoken previously to many young girls in Luxor about their attitude towards wearing hijab.
Quite a lot appear to be wearing at an added fashion/cultural statement. As in, I'm Muslim but I'm still cool! Another common answer is that it draws attention to my face and eyes.Another reply is because of family. But usually quickly added is the statement, "when I go away to school or work I will not wear hijab, except on family occasions".
Only a minority have said, that it is something they have chosen to do, for what would be considered the right reasons and intentions.
I also wear hijab when visiting the older members of my Egyptian "family" and to some family gatherings.
But,I do this purely out of respect, even though I am still in the process of finding my way to Islam.
I am sure that even if I do, I will wear hijab ,only on what I consider are appropriate occasions.
I totally agree with what Isadora says in the second paragraph of her answer. Just because girls are wearing hijab does not make them any more worthy as women or as better potential wives. I know this from first hand experience of "secrets" related to me by veiled girl. |

The Ministry of Common Sense

I remember walking in Alexandria with my friend's mother who is a very religious and veiled woman, she made a comment about some young girls (20's) who were veiled. She said: "they might be veiled but they don't have very good intentions and they are not veiled for religion but only for the pressures of family and society and because it is the culture. " I would have to agree with her. I am Muslim so I feel qualified to answer this question, although some might not take my opinion seriously because I am only a convert and not born Muslim. The veil issue is one that I gave much thought and consideration to and have decided to remain unveiled. Actually it was my first trip to Egypt shortly after my conversion that most influenced my decision to remain unveiled. But I have a choice in the matter. How many girls have to because of their families insisting on it? I had one girl in Egypt tell me "I wish I did not have to wear this but I don't have a choice." How many take it off when they are out of the house and put it back on before going home (I know a woman in the US who has to do this because her husband forces her to wear hijab). Another person here in this category commented that they want to learn to wear the hijab like Egyptian actresses because they look "cute". I have been looking at job ads in Egypt because I plan to move there and more and more I am seeing ads requesting "unveiled" women only. This is an interesting question and one that I have debated on many Egyptian Blogs. And, I know what you mean about Egypt looking like Iran in a few years. That is a very, very, very scarry thought. However, the women in Iran have been pushing the envelope for many years now. Every year the veils slip farther back revealing more and more hair. A mini revloution of sorts. There was an interesting article about that in a magazine a few years back.
Shalfat: Where are you coming up with this absurd notion that women in the US expose their bodies to make lots of money? Who is telling you these lies?
EDIT 2: Shalfat, thanks for admitting it was a bad example. People already have such wrong ideas about life in the US that we don't need to make it worse with very vague stereo-types and generalizations. Besides, it could not be farther from the truth.... |

if you cant all agree amongst your selves about whats right is it any wonder the west has strange ideas about how women are treated in islamic countries.
if its any help to you redwine i have seen an increase in the wearing of veils in egypt over the last few years. and as a true westerner i consider that to be very very scary.and yes i think egypt may go the same way as iran.
when and if that happens i for one will not return to egypt and i already know many westeners who say they will never go becuase they are too frightened. is this the image you want? it is the image many many see.
oh and i like wearing sexy clothes i like being admired by men and i know men like to look. please why is that so wrong in your eyes. |

Hi Redwine,
Thanks for posting this question as i really want to have the inside view on this subject.
I'm not a muslim but i live in Asia and over this side we have a lot of muslim too some veiled and some non veiled. Some of them if feel don't respect the meaning of wearing the veil they wear tight fitting clothes and sometimes revealing clothes that make me so uncomfortable, when i see it i get very angry believe me as it send all the wrong message to the people out there and i feel it is being irrespectful and insulting to the faith.
But like Ismaily said sometimes the non veiled one behave the same in Public too so the bottom line is about the person herself really.
My advice is people should be wearing it when they are ready to do it and most of it willing. Forcing someone to do it because everybody is doing it is not the way, it defeat the purpose i think, at the end of the day it has to be YOU and only YOU.
If you are comfortable the way you are, happy and at peace this way i don't see why you should change, perhaps one day as you get older you might see it differently and perhaps change your mind.
Take care of you Redwine and of your baby.
Good to have you back. |

I have deleted my answer, not because I it was wrong. but when I saw your attack on me I was very angry and replied to you with a hrasher comment. then I remembered what the prophet (PBUH) said to Abu Baker (RAA), that the angels left him when he was angry about someone attacking the prophet.
In short, may Allah guide you to the right path.
Common sense...: I didnt mean what you said at all, but it was a bad example anyway. |

In Morocco, about 50% of women in cities wear it, but in the countryside it's much more (I know that isn't your question).
I would say that a lot of women here wear it because of peer pressure. This is evident by how many of these young women cover their heads but also wear miniskirts over jeans, or capri pants, or tons of makeup. If the idea is to not draw attention to oneself, then they ought to wear their hijab properly...this is what leads me to believe it's out of fashion. |

What kind of nic you have choosen, it seem you are rebel- black sheep of the family.
Why should any one be hijabi just bcos of parents or husbands
Hijab is for Allah alone, I remember my dad was cursing all his daughters becos we were wearing black abaya's and hijab
He even threatened us that we will be killed if we practise our islam so strictly.
We daughters all defied him, now it has been 15 yrs.
I have daughter who is just a kid, she will not step out without hijab and I keep telling her. for u its not obligatory.
Well all I know some ppl are really guided |

Look, a lot of people fast in Ramadan, not because they want to perform their religious duty but because they have to , otherwise their families and society will reject them. Other people do it out of faith: the same for hijab.
I'm not sure though, ur observation makes Egypt any similar to Iran!!!Besides ya reeeeet to be like them, this country is advanced, and they have their "islamic" cinema....and other things ( el ma3na fi batn el sha3er).
Finally, knowing that wine is forbidden in Islam, would u consider changing ur nickname?
All the best.
I'm not sure why the westerner below me thinks it's frightening that alot of women are starting to wear the veil in Egypt, i wouldn't be frightened if Westerners decided to wear crosses all the time. Why is it that anything linked to Religion just scares u to death. Religion is meant to create peace, if u see things differently, that's a personal problem.
Besides, if u think it's cool when u walk around in "sexy" clothes and men stare at u, that's yet another problem. How would u feel if ur husband keeps staring at cool women like urself, how would u feel?cool?
I'm happy i got so many thumbs down! |
