no it doesn't mean that, if you revise Maslow's triangle of needs you will see that any human being needs to be socially and personally appreciated. if you don't feel appreciated from your spouse, this will hurt you, if you don't feel appreciated from your work seniors, this will hurt and might frustrated you as the time goes.
but if someone in the street didn't appreciate you, it doesn't matter, he doesn't know you in person, and might be in a bad mood. and the situation itself might trivial for you.
you need to be appreciated for the things that really matters to you from the people you really care for.
--------------------------------------...
edit: also you have to define what kind of appriciation you are looking for: emotional sympathy from family members, finincial and credit appriciation from the profesional context. academic appriciation (in a form of hiring and position) from the university commitee.
remember there were poeple whom their efforts were not appriciated in their time, and were recognized later on. philosphers, academic profesors, artists.
--------------------------------------...
edit 2: i have to add something related to our society, in most families in our society we were raised just to seek appriciation or social acceptance but following accepted norms. like eat your sandwish so God will love you, or dont do that so dad will not love you.. and so on..
and the problem when the children grow up they dont form their ambition according to what they really want, but to what they were streotyped for (engineering, medicine.. so on)..
and then these kids feel bad when some one feels bad about them or doesnt react to them as they do, because these children were stereotyped to seek social acceptance, and if they didnt, then they must be sinful in someway.
in this case seeking appreciation reflects low self-esteem not selfishness
there is difference between seeking social acceptance and being in need for appriciation. |

No, it is every body's right to be appreciated. |

not necessarily
sometimes people stand up for their rights...depends on many issues in fact..is it related to professional contribution or what?
what type of appreciation he/she is looking for ? sometimes simple smile is big appreciation...!
"selfishness" is a big word.

Absolutely not! There is a difference between feeling appreciate and self-centered. If you have worked hard and have earned the respect, then it is due to you. If you have not worked for the respect and appreciation, but still think it is owed to you...you are just self-delusional. |

No,cause everyone needs appreciation every once in awhile, and if they don't get it..then there gonna blow up soon because they feel like they don't get a thank you,or your such a good help, there gonna think the person who isn't showing appreciation is the one being selfish and greedy and unthankful |

The desire to be appreciated and being selfish are different. To be selfish one must have no goal outside of gaining attention, fame, money, etc. To desire appreciation one does something from the kindness of their heart first, and in return expects the same shown to them. |

No, it is a normal human need.
Everybody needs to be appreciated, and to be told that they are. |

in training teachers , you tell them to evaluate the learner on the spot .
you tell him what you think of his response , ie , Excellent/Very Good/ Good / OK or ( nothing ) .
this appreciation or lack of it is seen when animals are performing for the public .
even lions are given a sign that they are appreciated when they perform in the circus .
humans NEED this appreciation all along their lives .
it can be done by a special look / a pat on the shoulder / a cheer , etc .
this encourages the person to do his best .
i see it with great interest in the Olympic games when an athlete wins points and his coach touches him on the shoulder or hugs him .
when he does his best but loses , the coach pats him gently on the shoulder .
this means recognition of efforts .
this has nothing to do with selfishness .
selfishness means i want it ALL for myself . |

Not at all. As long as we are willing to give that we ask for, no problem. Some people do not realize that they miss getting so many things because of their unappreciative attitude. They act as if it is owed to them. |

Again we talk about ""Want"" ,, Generally people want anything , because they think about themselves, so if the person Wants ,,whatever , this person is thinking about him/her self,, and that can be roughly (selfish behavior).. Of course , we wants , when we are in a certain age much ,, including appreciation,, then when we are in the wisdom age , we do not actually give a sh*t,, Some , intelligent younger people do not care much of being appreciated, and they just take /do what they want , and that is also very selfish,,
(esp. to answer moonrise )
There is a difference between want to be appreciated by others, and be appreciated by others,, in the first case the person selfishness leads that he/she wants, the second case , he /she is appreciated just because he/she does NOT want /wait for the appreciation....crazy ha?
------edit
-''Wants''=Selfish=Bad --can be called also self centered
-happens without ''Want''=Not selfish (Probably deserve it)=Good
Actually they say, being generous and help people can sometimes be associated with being selfish, remember in all religions when we help others, we should try as much as we can to be hidden (anonymous), that is the real help, not to have this feeling of the superiority ( the upper hand feeling), not like our famous generous people when they have pages and pages in the news , because they donate something small,,this propaganda of appreciation is cheaper than paid ad actually..

Not necessarily. This person might be insecure and need validation. |

Most of us wants to feel appreciated, wanted, needed, and valued. All those things are common and normal until the person makes those needs take priority over everything else. If you start to do things or live a certain way based only upon the need to be appreciated, then you've let that need take over and you could be considered selfish in that you are the way you are because of that one need.
If you live your life always expecting appreciation from others, than you are going to be totally miserable and disappointed. It's better if you act or accomplish tasks, never expecting anything in return. Not praise, not reimbursement, not priviledge or status, fame or glory. You should act or do because you know it's the right thing to do. Knowing that you're doing the best you can with what you have is a testiment to good character. |
