No. 7 out of 10 people shot in a robbery in SA, is shot with their own gun. It only helps 30% of the gun owners. More often that that, it's stolen guns that kill others. |

YES ! I can easily defend myself without a gun too but in today's life you fight fire with fire ! PLEASE do not understand me wrong ! It is never a good Idea to get into a confrontation with a criminal if you can help it ! For me it is a different story as I am used to handling that kind of situations and do it by instinct ! Fact is a very great percentage of victims were shot with their own weapon ! The MAIN thing here is to have a choice in the way we protect ourselves ! |

I dont think you are...
Guns seem to call on more trouble than they keep away. People feel invincible with a gun on them. They tend to think no one can harm them when they have a gun... which is wrong most of the time.
It may save you as much as it may be cause of harm being inflicted upon you or your family.
how many kids have accidentally chot themselves or friends due to minor neglegence? How many frustrated partners have killed their families then themselves out of depression, anger or jealousy? |

Some of you need to have a reality check. The following stats are from the 2005 FBI Uniform Criime Report.
These are your chances of being injured if you are attacked and they vary depending on how you respond.
No resistance at all, complied with attacker: 25%
Non-violent resistance, tried to get away: 45%
Resisted with a weapon other than a gun: 40%
Resisted with a gun: 6%
Notice that these are REPORTED crimes. A significant amount of the time, the would be victim that chases off an aggressor with a firearm doesn't report it. A firearm, is the single best means of defense when confronted, PERIOD.
That being said, if you choose to own a firearm you should be well trained in its use. Gun safety and marksmanship are just a part of it. Trying to shoot with speed an accuracy in low light conditions in a life threatening confrontation is not anywhere close to shooting at paper targets on a gun range.
So if you own a gun for self defense, you have a responsibility to become well trained and to understand the ramificatations of using the gun. This will vary from state to state.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of other things you can and should do before going for you gun. Awareness and avoidance are a start. Learn to de-escilate a situation before it become volitale, and learn simple, yet brutally effective unarmed defense. None of that will mean anything if you are accousted by some meth head with a knife who wants to kill you for fun though. For most us a gun would be the only real defense in that situation. |

No and Yes.
No because - I own one, but had never used it. I bought it a long time ago when gangsters ruled the roost. Them you could scare off, not the criminals of today.
Yes because - it gives me that fake feeling of security when I'm walking down the streets of i'loxion at night. Have never been tempted or forced to use it, though. What can I say street cred is handy like that.
Just wish they could loosen up on this gun control thing and implement 'bullet control'. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. |

Absolutely guns make you more safe. The caveat is that you need the correct training and education to use one properly. If you know under what circumstances you should use one, there is hardely any better personal self-defense tactic. People who have their own guns turned against them often hesitate, freeze in the face of danger, or have not practiced using their gun enough to quickly engage it. Personally, I am a pragmatist and I think arming law-abiding people and providing training can be a great deterrent to crime. The police can't be everywhere and if a criminal knows that everyone around him is also packing, he will think twice before he decides to be the first one to pull out a weapon. Remember folks, "Guns don't kill people. People kill people." |

Guns freak me out!!!
But with today's crime they're starting to look better and better.
Or maybe just a good ol' fashion tazzer! Easy to carry and very effective and less likely to leave you bleeding in the isles! |

I think yes, I would feel safer having a gun to protect myself with. I just hope they don't get it from me, that would be a problem... |

i would never have a gun in my house.
first, you hear very often of "accidents" that happen with guns: children getting shot, people hurting themself or others, ...
second, when criminals try to get in, try to get valuables, ... they're either better prepared or not prepared at all to be confronted with armed victims ... and almost always, it's the victims that get hurt.
so thanks, but no arms in my place |

I had my pistol for quite some time and had to unfortunately make it of use more than once. It was an annoyance to carry on me but then the area where I was placed was very dodgy too.
It was not that I had a sense of security around having / carrying it, but one thing I can witness for you is when you see the purps carrying arms, you sure as hell are glad you are trained in using yours.
When I resigned from the job it was about 6 months later, I sold the gun. To date I can say I never had the use for it nor been in a situation where it could have made a difference. |

Owning a gun did not make me feel safer at all. I actually sold mine a few years ago and is glad I did so. The issue is very debatable and each one has a right to defend himself/herself. I have read about too many cases where the gun owner were murdered by his own gun. |

No. I used to carry a gun whils living in SA, and working in what was looked at as a very dangerous place for a white woman. However, my grandmother, who I was very close to, was killed by a gunshot, apparantly accidently. I could never touch a gun after that, and it makes me feel nervous if I know there is one in the room. |

No a gun does not make me feel safe.
In fact if you are not prepared to kill someone threatening you a gun is a liability.
I dislike guns. |

No, personally i dont think so. You can die and unable to protect yourself even though you have a gun because i think it depends on who takes it out first. |

Hello this is Mr Cash
I dont own a gun but recon its not a bad idea to invest in one here in SA.
The problem comes when I have shot the black bastard who tried to rape, murder, steal etc etc. What happens to me?
I go to jail for protecting myself and my rights!
Its a no win situation |

Ayiza you are definitely naive. What you describe as "crime" is no more than ANC inspired Genocide against Whites. Have a look in your History and ask "What did the ANC do with all the AK47's in their possession after 1994?' " Why is it that many of the shootings are done with Police guns?" Why is it that often the ammunition used is Army issue?" "Why are the ANC making such a big issue of disarming Whites yet doing nothing about the unlicensed firearms in the hands of their comrades?" " Why have they spent more than R11 million trying to prosecute the Boeremag, locked up their members for years and still cannot come up with evidence or a case?"
It is genocide but you are safe as you will not be targetted as an African. |

It also doesn't make me feel safe....I last held a gun in my hand in 1990. I loath guns...it's a pity that most violent crimes in our country are committed with guns....I support the anti-gun lobby groups!!!! |
