I donated blood for years in South Africa. Once I arrived in Germany I went to report myself at their blood donation centre. I supplied all my previous donation and medical certificates including a cleared Aids test (which I was forced to undertake from a German institution anyway, since it is a compulsory requirement if you apply for the allowance to stay in Germany…regardless of the fact that you are married to a German)
What a laugh, they were adamant that they do not want my blood..... because…..I am an AFRICAN! They turn down blood from people that come from Africa, full stop, end of story! I can not explain the feeling I felt when I walked out of there. They constantly advertise how desperately they need blood and here I am with official documentation to prove that I was a regular blood donor for many years and provided documentation from their own medical institute confirming that I am HIV negative…but that was irrelevant. How is that for a disgrace?
I tried to be a soldier Sir....but I am tainted because I am an African |

I used to - unitil they admitted they threw away blood from black people. They may have done away with this practice, but they didnt want my blood before, but still took it . . . |

I know it's a good thing, but I'm too scared to do something like that. I was even too freakin' scared to have a blood test. |

I used to donate regularly in high school but they then refused my blood in my first year at university as I had had a small tattoo done in the last 6 months, after that I lost interest and never bothered donating again. |

I am not old enough yet! :(
But if I was, I would do!! My brother does, his first time to give blood was when he was in Zim and they took a bit to much and he fainted!
My mom is an organ donor and I intend to follow in her path. As well as giving blood. If people didn't give blood my father would not be here today so I thank the Lord and those who give blood everyday! |

I donated for a long time. I was on 50 units and then I stopped. I decided to rather keep my blood for myself. I will give my blood when one of my family needs it, though. I'm not impressed with the respect the blood bank gives it's donors. They need me, not the other way around. Besides that, there was always a problem with the iron levels in my blood. Before I filled in the forms, I had them test my blood, so I don't waste my time filling in forms if the drop won't sink to the bottom. |

I didn't know the age limit for blood donor's went up in SA. I thought the age limit was 16.
I've donated blood on occasions when my doctor has phoned me asked me to come it. I'm B neg blood type. So yeah. Other than that I don't. I'm deathly scared of needles. |
