Suggest making a copy of your passport and carry it separately from your real passport. Also, have a credit card or debit card that is accepted in Egypt handy. (Visa, MC, Amex) If you don't have one, traveler's check.
Addresses and phone numbers of American consulate or embassy.
In emergencies, both of those items will come in very handy. |

You should not bring anything that will have to be thrown away at the airport. You should just buy that stuff when you're there.
You should definitely bring a good camera, a journal to write about your experiences, a map that you can track your trips/routes, plenty of clothing that will cover your arms/legs, a hat to protect your face, some nasal spray that will keep your nose moist (I learned that the desert is murder on your sinuses in Las Vegas).
