Rana, I know what you are talking about, but you are mistaken in attributing it to racism! In my opinion it is racism backfiring at us! min ilakhir kida, 3o2dit ilkhawaga. We were made to think and feel that we are inferior and that the Western ideal and standards of beauty are superior. That's why Egyptians prefer 3aroosa beda 3ineha khodr bisha3r asfar!

If you notice, people don't just stare at dark skinned people, but they also stare even more at blonde, blue eyed foreigners. I think it's takhalof, but some people really can't help it. They have been brain washed and programmed to think in a certain way. My 12 year old niece hates the fact that she is a typical looking Egyptian girl and was even more disappointed when her little sister was born looking like a carbon copy of her! The rubbish she hears all around her made her think it would have been better to be white and blonde! I was once commenting on how cute my daughter and her little cousin who is her same age looked together. My nephew said no way! Your daughter is a lot prettier! That is because he thought she "conformed" to the stereotype of beauty! Ilmoseeba is that he's only 10 years old!

What made my blood boil is the superficial idiots who all want to propose to a girl just based on her looks. Biyashtarito wa7da beda wi 7ilwa wi rasheeqa wi taweela ... wi tila2eeh howa wala yiswa asasan! When I was pregnant everybody was telling me of course the baby will be amar because her grandmother is khawagaya! I was like I swear if she looks Egyptian and I hear one dumb comment like what a shame or gabit ilwa7asha di mineen I'll kill whoever said it! Not that I cared if she was white or samra or blonde or brunette, I just hate the dumb comments people make. My sister's mother in law was once surprised that my sis was commenting that a certain picture of my cousin's wedding didn't do the bride justice. She took one look at the pic then said Allah, mish beda wi khalas, tib2a 7ilwa !!!

Rana, if anyone gives you that crap then he/she is a loser and a pathetic idiot not worth spending your time with. They must be really ugly on the inside if all they care is what you look like on the outside. And for the record, you do look very pretty! ;)

I have to agree with u on this one, there are some really shallow minded racist people in Egypt and what is really strange is that those people who says people with whiter complexions are much prettier and they look down on darker complesions actually ARE dark skinned themselves.

This shows that they only hate themselves and hate to see others who are in acceptance with the way Allah swt created them. It is so shallow and pathetic.

A really dark skinned colleague of mine once told me an idiom that she believes strongly in it says" we7sha we 3agba nafsy washouf el helween t2raf nefsey" .

The two parts of your question have nothing to do with each others Ranoush !!!!

The first part about racism is not correct in Egypt, seeing dark skinned people as Bawwab or Waiters is only your eyes spotting those from thousands others who are not dark skinned because this what movies told you. but well educated people are working as doctors, engineers, sales, marketing,...etc. My boss in Egypt was from Noba and he is now and Expat for the multinational company I used to work for before I left.

The second part about men prefer dark or white skinned girls, is absolutely a personal preference and has nothing to do with racism, girls also do the exact same. and is not only skin colour, eyes, hair, body type,...etc.

Everyone walking alone in Egypt will be staired by others who are in a group and have nothing to do.
If you are good looking, ugly, fat, thin, tall, short, black, purple..... etc they will stare. People like these are bored and try spending theyr time by whatever they find in front of them.
About the person who said that hes friend said so about you, I think the person who said so is worse than the person who said it because i dont find any point of telling you this unless he wants to see any thing to annoy you, just let go...
Life is not about what people think, it is about what you think in the guidance of what god has revealed to you, like try to look good, but within the limits of the islamic teachings.
You could see a movie and say it is very good, your friend will say no it sucks, another will say it is the best movie i have ever seen, god gave each person a different mentality than the other which adds to the fun of having different thoughts to share, but when it comes to personal things like style, no one has the right to interfere with you unless you ask for his/her opinion.
Just let go, relax, and enjoy what you have and thank god that he gave it to you,
Some people spend theyr lives wasting all the chances they have by being desperate and never giving a try in anything they want, but it is good to try and fail better than never try at all, so, cheer up

Ranoush, you're so unjust this time, I think the situation you told has a big share in your hard feelings, you should look more general and if you do, you'll see that so little people (I'm talking about Egyptians here) behave like you talked. And for me myself, I don't look down to any body whatever his social position, cultural level or any other measure may be, human is not to be measured by these false measures, instead by how much "human" they are.

ur beautiful the way u r. It is not a matter of racism when it comes to Egyptian men preferring the fair skinned girls over the dark skinned ones. It is just a matter of preferences. Here in Egypt, they see their ideal wife, characteristics wise, as a white skinned, nice frammed girl. Some even have dreams of marrying blondes with colored eyes. I have known few who like dark skinned ones. But again, I don't regard this as racism. Take for example the great late legend "Ahmed Zaki" or "Abdel Haleem" they both were dark skinned but made the greatest influences on Egyptians and were very loved and respected. Before I get married, I was always hoping to marry a dark skinned man "asli bamoot fel somr" lol ,but I ended up marrying a fair skinned one. a3mil eeeh kan nefsi a3'anilo "asmar ya asmarany" hehehe. we ba3deen ma kol el songs are abt el somr, nothing for elbeed, mesh zolm dah!!!!
dont be too hard on urself and ignore such ignorant ppl. I think some of the most beautiful women are Beyonce Knowels and Halle Berry and they're both dark. elmohem ya setty cheer up and " u r soooo beautiful to me... baby"

I believe Egyptians and anyone else from any other country can be racist about other things. They might not be aware of it though, but it's a human nature

but i see ur point we always say my men in my dreams must be tall white hazel or blue eyes and words like that do u know wat forign people say about the man in their dreams they say he must be average height, black hair, dark brown eyes and like this cz he is unique in their sight also green eyes and blond in unique in our sight but that won't make any problem its normal its not racsim at all i think so

Rana , i will mention something only for once, as i don't like exposing my private life , I am white and i have freckles in my face, but i loved a very dark man before , I used to write to him in my letters

I loved everything about him , even i wanted my son to have his colour .. and we didn't marry for certain circumstances

Later months ago another dark man proposed to me , rich , his father is a contractor , he used to talk to me about blonds and how he loves them and they loved him too , he mentioned before that he didn't like my face or body so much ,though he isn't handsom at all, till i put an end to this relationship after he got on my nerves .. i wanted to end that mental crap he was getting me into it............
do u want to know where is he now?
he is lonely begging me to come back to him .. and ur man will die lonely unhappy for what he did to himself and u!
i will post u some links to me questions about this man the second one , to know how miserable i was on knowing him and how much i am happy now with my freedom!

Those who think in that way are ignorant and very superficial. They are also suffering from 3odet el khawaga as farah said. My best friend whom I always trusted and felt safe with is dark skinned, her father is from Sudan and she is has a dark skin. She is very chick, stylish and takes good care of her self. The way she speaks is so classy and many students in college admired her very much. The point is what is inside rules, the reality proves itself. What I want to say is that not all people are like that as I have seen myself. The bottom line is she must have high self esteem and confidence.

i am black and have never been to Egypt but what i know of them is that most of them especially men are racists. I had a big fight with my math teacher when i was in high school who is Egyptian. He disrespected me even though it was in my own country, maybe if you go to Egypt it will be worse than anything but to be fair here, most of the Muslims i have met are so friendly. Oh their eyes are scary though!

for me, i like "Africans"........ they are so kind, sweet and nice( i love to play with their kids and have chat with them ), but still, may be i won't agree to get married to them..........not for their colors at all, but for other reasons .
