I went to Egypt on Honeymoon about 2 years ago and I was very ill whilst there. The food hygiene leaves a lot to be desired and even the hotel doctor told me not to eat most of the stuff on offer!! I had severe food poisoning and ended up having to have injections and medication for the last 4 days of the holiday. I could only drink water and eat rice and potatoes, it ruined our honeymoon!!
The water in Egypt should not be drunk, and many people say to avoid salad or anything that could have been washed in local water. The local people's digestive systems are used to the standard of hygiene, but ours are not unfortunately. I actually knew straight away that the meat I ate was rotten after one mouthful, but the chef just got angry and shouted at me, it was rancid!!!
That pain will stay with me forever, it's worst I've ever felt in my life!!!
Summer Breeze - I don;t eat junk food at home I eat Fresh food and cook it all from scratch, You can't blame the food we eat normally on us getting food poisoning in Egypt! |

I've been to Egypt 3-times and never come back or gotten sick. In fact, it is probably one of my favorite travel destinations as I love the food and people!
Could be that your friends didn't use good travel sense. Maybe they drank tap water which will get pretty much anyone who's not used to the water in an area sick. |

Your friends must be very sickly and have a weak stomach.
I have been to Egypt many times. I have eaten street food, fresh fruit juice from the stands, fish, salads fruit etc, everything, and it all delic , hmmm :) I even drank the water!!!! And never once have I been ill.
Your problem is that you are eating too much processed, and convenience food at home. So that you are not used to fresh tasty food. Try eating less junk food at home. It is healthier, and you get a stronger stomach. And then you can enjoy all the wonderful, real food that is out there |

First just how many people do you know how have gone to Egypt and come back ill?
Do you even realize just how many million people visited Egypt every year?
people constantly advise tourists to drink bottled water and to wash the fruit and raw vegetables before eating them. Most do and very very few get ill.
Most cases of gastro related to travel in different countries is due to the stupidity or carelessness of the individual.
I have seen American guys drunk and splashing around in the Nile. Duh!
Another thing I am wondering is why did the doctor order Anti-botiotics [sic] antibiotics for a stomach complaint.
Just a little bit sus. to me boys!
Never mind he's home now and I'm sure that you and his mommy can look after him.
Have a nice day!. |

i have been to Egypt over 13 times in the last 10 years and have only been ill once, this was my own fault as i did not drink enough water. If travelling to any 3rd world country you need to be very careful, in a climate like egypt you need to drink at least 8 litres of bottled water a day, do not eat any fruit or salad that has been prepared (fruit that has not been peeled or cut is fine) |

hi dear i didn't visit Egypt , i live there and drink tap water and my daughters also do , the times we had any stomach troubles was by eating outside during summer , the only advice is to avoid mayonnaise and food containing raw egg also salads should look fine and fresh , as long as you trust the place you eat in there is no problem , by the way my cousin went to turkey and go sick , also my closest friend called from Austria and she is sick ,and my aunt called me from England and she is sick too, what is the problem don't you ever get sick in your countries or what , this is fate for god sake and it could happened anywhere , tens of millions live in Egypt if what you are saying is right they should have been all dead by now |

It is not only in Egypt.I was born and raise in Ukraine, lived there for 19 years(never got sick),than moved to USA. After 2 years,I went to visit Ukraine and got sick cause of food and had flew. Same thing, when i was in Mexico.
I have been in Egypt twice (this year),and I love egyptian food. first time i got sick,i had stomachache and flew also. The second time a had no problem and i ate everything from the street(except meat or milk product, case I'm vegetarian);but i drank water from bottle or from tab,but used filter.
It could be any country. Ur body is not used to,and it takes time to make a change.
P.S. FOOD IN EGYPT IS GREAT, FRUIT AND VEGETABLES ARE FRESH AND NATURAL. DO NOT BLAME EGYPT,BLAME OUR BODY! |

I'm in a hurry and I will tell you many of the tourists who visit Egypt are repeaters. If I will have time I will continue more details about reasons of {everyone you know} I prefer also if you can mention where are you from or where are they living. |

how many people do you know that have gone to Egypt? If it not alot of people then its not very significant as they may be just unlucky.
I have been to Egypt every 2 months for at least a week sometimes longer to see my boyfriend. I eat in different places cook our own food and i haven't come back ill.
they may have got ill from the hot weather and not drinking enough water when out in the sun this may have contributed to them been ill. They also cook nearly everything oil which causes upset stomachs. It is advised that you only drink bottled water and don't have ice cubes that have been made with tap water as the water in some places isn't really very good to drink. Also it is advised to eat in the hotel and it certain restaurants so you know how the food is cooked.
I think your friends were just a little bit unlucky i know alot of people who have been to Egypt and never been ill and i know people who have moved out there to live and haven't got ill and I'm planing to live there soon so Egypt is not a place where people come back ill. |

common sense, dont drink freezing cold water, should be body temperature, dont drink local water, hot temperature makes food go off faster etc |
