Female touring Palestine/Israel?

I'm planning on taking a trip to Palestine and Israel. I was wondering what the culture/acceptance/tradition is like for female tourists in Palestine and Israel. Would I have to be exceptionally modest?

Well, In Israel you don't have to unless you want to visit religeous sites or religeous residential areas. If and when you do visit any of those it is just a right thing to do. In any other places you can dress any way you like. Israeli secular girls are very modernly dressed. If you do visit religeous sites or residential places then modest in Judaism for female means that you have to wear scirt bellow your knees, and your arms should be covered bellow elbows. As far as going to visit territories I would strongly recommend not to go there unless you going with someone who fits 2 criterias (a: someone you trust with your life and safety, b: someone who knows what (s)he is doing - preferably local person who has been in particular place you are planning to visit).

I hope that helps.

there's no such thing as palestine, but if you go to gaza you will be in danger, they are run by sharia law now and they hate women, especially single women. the west bank is not as bad. and if you go to israel ranting about palestine, you won't be very welcome either. maybe you're safer somewhere else.

I've never been to Israel, the west bank was doing just fine until last night and then the Fatah murdered two Israeli police officers, the past has shown these two murders will cost Fatah dearly. Gaza is filled with inner intrigues, everyone will treat you like a spy, you will more than likely end up in jail, you will be fed false information everywhere you go, I suggest you stay away until a peace is decided upon, even then things change from day to day..
I've tried to stay away but these lies, lies spread by uninformed haters are just too much.

Hi, there is no such place as Palestine. :)

You are talking about Israel (please note this is Israel travel section) and yes a certain decorum of modesty is necessary and especially in Jerusalem. Keep in mind that is all Holy Land.

Now back to this Palestine issue. It is a political entity and a hostile one at that. Travel to Gaza is not permitted and if one wants to travel to Judea and Samaria, Israel it is currently occupied by alot of hostiles so you'll have to check with Israeli authorities before traveling to that area. Israel is in charge of security and takes this responsibility seriously and 3million tourists made it safely to and from Israel last year, so no worries as long as one listens to the people in charge :) In fact, security is much better in Israel than it is on this particular travel forum, so just ignore some of the spiteful answerers.

Have a great trip.

You would be wise not to go to any Muslim area without a male escort.

You will be subject to danger in Arab Occupied Israel (i,e., Sinai, Gaza, Southwest Syria, Shchem and West Jordan). In liberated Israel, you will be safe.

✡I LOVE THE ZIONIST ENTITY✡
I don't know what "palestine" is.

Care to explain?

See, I can't find it on the maps anywhere. I have no idea where I would go to to find this "palestine" you speak of.
Please.

LOL Crystal- Those suicide bombers and the rockets fired are all acts of "the dirty Jews", right? LOL.

The "palestinians are so modest and know common decency they democratically elect a terrorist organization. That is something to remember.

In Palestinian territories maybe. In the west bank no............in Gaza also probably no. I don't think you can get into Gaza that easily. In Israel it does not matter if you are modest or not. Most Israeli woman are not modest. It is a very secular society very similar to greek and italian societies. It's very southern European. Palestine was always connected and depended on southern Europe historically so I am not surprised about this.

It's really a terrible idea to go into Gaza or the West Bank by yourself. I can't stress that enough, it's awful, especially as a single woman. The people who say not to take cameras (assuming you can get a permit) are right. If Hamas catches you taking a picture of one of their many "indiscretions," you will be subject to punishment under Hamas law, which may be any number of gruesome things (they recently legalized crucifixion, and for simply belonging to Fateh, you can get your feet and knees shot, or be put under house arrest). If you go alone anyway, dress like a Muslim. Don't look any males in the eyes and steer clear of large crowds of males. The Arab communities in Israel have the country's highest rate of domestic abuse (70% of the women interviewed in a recent poll said they didn't consider insults from their husband and slaps to be abuse). Fateh police doesn't even respond to domestic abuse calls.

Long story short, "modesty" isn't "expected," it's imposed.

In Israel, you will only need to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or when passing through religious neighborhoods, if you choose to visit. The rest of the country is fairly secular and you may dress how you like. I also would not recommend traveling alone in Israel, but for another reason - it's much more enjoyable to share the experience with a group, and you may find it hard to get around if you don't speak any Hebrew.

Israels' religious sites require modesty. There is no Palestine.

In Palestine you should dress modestly. In Israel you don't really have to.

While your in the area come to Iran too!

JayJay
in Palestine, you have to be modest to some extend.
in Israel, it doesn't really matter.

in Palestine, you have to be respectful, remember that respecting elder people is a very important thing.
in Israel, the kids over there think it's ok to kick any woman they see ( even if she was in her 30s, 40s, 50s or even more), so basically it's ok to disrespect those who don't respect you.

avoid religious discussions.
don't walk down the streets holding a camera especially if there was any israeli soldier in that street.

about food ( had to mention it since I'm hungry right now) , the Palestinian dishes rule !!! even most of the israelis prefer the palestinian food. ^_^

^ PaLo ^
well in Israel you can go completely naked, in palestine however we still have some modesty.

lol im playing with fire

The zionist entity: B O R I N G ! its getting old now man, whether or not its on the map is the lamest argument.

You my have some fun, but make sure you do not bring your camera because Israelis are afraid of exposure to the media, and if you decide to go into Gaza, watch out for Israeli teargas and bullets. An American activist was shot yesterday in Gaza just for protesting against the Israelis.

However the further away from the borders you are, the safer you are. From war. Do us all a favor though, write some stories from the Palestinians in Israel and report them when you return. Take all the pictures you can and film their stories if possible. Post them on youtube for us all to see.

That is what i would do if i could go Israel.

Crystal (PSM)
Palestine is safe, but in israel you need to watch out for hateful jews, suicide bombers and randomly fired rockets.

The Palestinians expect modesty and decency. The jews don't know what that is.

I would suggest a bullet proof vest under your shirt and as for head gear a steel helmet springs to mind. Not much defence against phosphorus bombs so a good pair of running shoes for your feet.
