This question has been asked before and the answer is still the same. . .Dating back to the Waterhole-Oassis-Laws in Saudi, women were and still are the property of men and they are not allowed freedom to roam around unattended. Men are insecure and fear that the women would leave them. |

Women in Saudi Arabia will be allowed to get behind the wheel as the government lifts its longstanding ban on female drivers, according to a UK newspaper report.
A decree will be issued by the end of this year, the Daily Telegraph reported officials as saying.
“There has been a decision to move on this by the Royal Court because it is recognised that if girls have been in schools since the 1960s they have a capability to function behind the wheel when they grow up,” a source said, adding, “We will make an announcement soon.”
Shura Council member Mohammad Al Zulfa said the decision comes as part of King Abdullah’s reform strategy.
“When it was first raised, the extremists were really mad,” he said. “Now they just complain. It is diminishing into a form of consent.”
The decision comes after a fresh drive by activists to get the ban, in place since the establishment of the state in 1932, lifted.
A new petition was handed to King Abdullah earlier this month urging him to end the restriction, and stating the “hope that 2008 will be the year in which Saudi women obtain their natural right to drive a car”.
Women will also be allowed to stay in hotels or furnished apartments without their male guardian, marking the end to further restrictions, a local newspaper reported on Monday.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a circular to hotels asking that they accept women, providing their details are sent to a police station, Al-Watan said.

Well to answer this question I have to say that I am not Saudi, but I am Kuwaiti and women do drive in our country.I think the reasonable reason why saudi women don't drive is that most women o Saudi women cover their faces so it will make it difficult for the police officer to recognize them and how will they get their drivers' license picture. |

First, this ban will not be lifted this year. I live in Jeddah and there has been no official word one way or the other.
This was originally a religious issue and officially remains as such. However, in speaking to many people "in the know", there is also a very strong economic issue for not allowing women to drive. Because women can not drive themselves, the demand for taxis and the employment of drivers is kept artificially high and creates a good deal of employment.
And considering the way people drive here, why on earth would anyone want to get behind the wheel of a car?!? I see numerous accidents and plenty of near misses every day on my short trip to and from work. Chaos reigns on the roads. |

well, the reason behind it is history really.
Saudi Arabia is a young country where the people switched from a tribal way of life to modern day life in less than sixty years. Society had to cope with many changes in too short of a time.
At the time the kingdom was created, tribal rule prevailed and women's rights were dictated by their legal guardians: father, husband, older brother in the case of the demise of the father.
technological advances and new features of modern day life were brought swiftly unlike the rest of the world.
the country is adapting to the requirements of society, slowly, i'll grant you that, but we are adapting.
in the past ten years, many advancements have been done in favour of women.
The issue of driving seems to be the only thing foreign people and the media seem to notice and remember about Saudi Arabia.
Well I wish for women to drive but I would not feel comfortable letting my wife or my sister drive down here. People are just too reckless driving, so having all this part of the population put behind wheels will just statistically ans surely increase the number of road kills, which is already one of the highest in the world.
Another thing about Saudi Arabia is that we are a segregated society and mixity is not allowed. Women driving will be another factor in contradiction with mixity and some boys will take advantage of women driving to harass them. It is going to create one hell of a ruckus before things settle down. |

....Can women really drive anywhere?!? ;p
[I'm just kidding]
The fact is, most Saudi girls I know (including my sisters and cousins..etc) have driving licenses from either somewhere in Europe or the States........
This debate has been going on for ages and has been worn out! The fact is, there isn't an actually or rational reason behind this phenomena; Its just part of the modern and extended Wahabi mentality of keeping women in check...reducing their liberties as much as possible....and nobody thinks its fare!?! A lot of things aren't "fare" in Saudi...Its not like all citizens necessarily agree, they just don't know how to protest against anything....
But this too shall pass :) I don't know about any "decree " (anything is possible) but eventually, this senseless ban (like many others) will be lifted........Do keep in mind that it won't be an easy transition; there will be an increase of road traffic, "incidences" and "issues" to deal with...it might take some time...
And yes, there are more pressing and integral matters to deal with first..... |

Not even the authorities there would give you a good reason |

I will give you the two most popular reasons offered. Both are B.S.
1. "It's for society to decide"
This is the cop-out argument. The Saudi governments recent driver's law change does not specify what gender can drive. It does not name a driver as male or female. If I understand the situation correctly, the King is advised by the Shoura Council. These guys and the Saudi judges are old school Sharia Law practitioners. They don't want women driving because they fear a loss of their male domination. They think they are promoting virtue and preventing vice by keeping women from "mingling" with men on the road way. The main segment of "society" that opposes this are the clerics and judges (all male, all conservative Islamists).
2. "Women are dangerous behind the wheel"
Another lame attempt to oppose women driving. Young men are currently the main danger on Saudi roadways. They speed and drive recklessly. Search YouTube for Saudi drifting for an eye opener.
______
The whole thing can be baby-stepped into place. The King should first allow women with foreign licenses to drive, then after driving instruction classes the next group would be older women who have to travel to work, then women to take safety and driver's training. This shouldn't be difficult to accomplish. |

Its a problem actually, for a country like Saudi Arabia, when you have youngsters, either boys or girls, driving. Each country, when it makes a decision, HAS to be different from other countries. Not ALL countries should have American Laws. Some American laws (the Anti-Trust Law-you get your @** whopped just because youre corporation is so good it dominates or almost owns the market) are just outrageous. Im a Saudi myself, and I think the age limit should be upped to 25. Its ridiculous when you see (which is very very common) 18 or 19 year olds driving their graduation-present 2009 Range Rover EXC Editions, Lamborghini Murcielagos,Pagani Zondas, Gallardos, 911 GTR2s, Nissan GTRs, RollsRoyce Phantoms, or Bugatti Veyrons recklessly down the highway, drifting crazily and running into bystanders. Its a country full of an Elite class, a tiny middle class, and an invisible lower class. When youre dad makes $800 000 USD a month, you dont care if you trashed your Gallardo, 'cause youre dad takes care of that (and gets you a new one) in less than 2 weeks. Although I belong to those who role high in the sky, I have to say that we shouldnt even be allowing young men, let alone young girls, drive. Its dangerous for them, and everyone else. Imagine the day the King allows women to drive, its going to be a frenzy, and when they eventually get their licenses, accidents are probably going to soar.
Speaking from living experience in Saudi, we dont have that many accidents, compared to Canada (which has almost the same pop. size). I see accidents happening at low speeds all the time in Canada, atleast 4 a day...guess whos driving? Mostly women. We have enough cars as it is in Saudi. Probably 4.12 per person (last time they did that car survey thing), now add women who are all giddy and excited, like any girl legally allowed to drive, accidents will be so common the god damn women dont want to drive anymore.
And you know what, I have something to say about you americans. You start problems in peoples' countries, or if they have some traditions or laws you dislike(such as women not allowed to drive, women covering up, etc.) you want to start these problems within these countries, uprisings, "revolutions". But let me tell you something, we arent some other Iran. We are the hosts of the Cities of Islam. Your mind changing propagonda catalyst systems are pissing everybody off.I know this is off topic, but Im ranting, so listen up.You complain about human rights, yet you detain people at Guantanamo Bay without a proper tribunal/trial. Your soldiers are treating most probably innocent men caught in the cross fire like garbage. Please, before you cause all this disruption and commotion, fix your country first, and we might just listen to your advice.

because woman cant drive...this rule should be applied to the whole world... well done saudis...lol jkn...coz they say woman should stay home and not go out n meet other boys bla bla..but they still go out by themselves anyways..
and yeah im sure the saudis are going to change this rule soon but not now,,because western countries are forcing it onto the kingdom...and so if they changed the law,, the westerners will be like yes it was thanks to us...so i think the should keep this law until the Westerners shut up about it. |
