do not go to the poor areas , you are an infidel and will be in danger
AL kahdias predecessor was raised in the Egyptian slums
keep an eye out for people who dont belong there has been a few machine gunning of tourists
and it is hot drink only bottled water , no exceptions
make sure your your medical insurance covers a medivac
stay with the tourists
dont wear shorts or short sleeves
if you have a woman with you no boobs, no bare shoulders, no bare legs or pants
long dresses and shirts and loose tops
if you go to a mosque or private home remove your shoes
make sure you go to teh toilet before you leave the hotel, you do NOT want to go to an egypian toilet if you can find one

vonibee
make sure you have all your jabs, and don't drink the water, don't even clean your teeth with it , other than that it's beautiful , enjoy !!

Well,
1. Wherever u are, don't eat like mad because we're not used to the bacteria in Egypt (just like theyre not used to ours).
2. Be friendly and smile - egyptians like to joke and have a good time and you'll have a good trip if ure not nervous the whole time.
3. You don't need any extra jabs other than the ones u normally have done.
4. Don't let people rip u off...ofcourse haggle but don't go crazy...a good tip would be to look around at other prices before u buy anything. Depends on u.
5. If someone starts trying to sell u something and u don't want to buy it all u need to do is say a polite 'no thank u' and most of the time they will back off. (It worked with me nearly every time).
6. Ofcourse wear suitable clothes - long(ish) sleeves and trousers are good - for 2 main reasons - u wont stand out of the crowd too much and attract unwanted attention and also the sun can be harmful especially when ure skin is bare for over 15 mins.

To be honest there aren't many strict rules, it's not exactly saudia arabia, and besides people there are used to tourists and are quite relaxed in general. Just look after urself and be alert - that's really how u should be wherever u go in the world!
One tip I gave my parents is just don't expect anything - that way u wont be upset if anything goes wrong! Many people have visited Egypt and either absolutely loved it or completely hated it.

And just don't forget to have a good time! :)

I am often in Cairo and really enjoy it. People are VERY hospitable, sincere and friendly and VERY funny! They will not rip your jewellery off!! ( they are very dignified people!)

Key words :
thankyou = Merci ( from the French colonial days)
hello = Salam

If you need a cab by the main tourist areas, they will try it on with the price...so do haggle! Oh and prepare for a white knuckle ride...Cairo Traffic is something else!!!

Have a great time and yes do take some Immodium!

Do not listen to bad publicity. There is competition nowadays in tourism. Eleven million tourists visit Egypt every year, they leave happy and sent thank you letters when they arive home.
Enjoy it, you will see wonderful things that are not anyelsewhere.
It is sunny and warm in the morning but cool in the evening.
The exchange rate of Euros, Dollars or Sterling pounds is better in Egypt.
Have a nice trip.

i went and it was really cool. as a female you need to wear skirts in the temples etc. They have the best leather there to buy, in case you want a bag or jacket and they drive like maniac's!!!!

depends where you are going in egypt, we go to sharm and hurghada every year, it is great but you have to be ready for being pestered if you are blunt with them they will be ok after all they only want your money!

Three or four weeks before you go, eat a clove of garlic. I know it is gross but it is even worse to have your holiday spoiled by bites. Mosquitos don't go around having just any old blood, they are quite particular. Long after the garlic smell has passed, the mosquitos can still detect it and they don't like it so they leave you alone. It has worked for me on previous journeys to sub-Saharan Africa.
Another thing, minds are like parachutes, they work best when they are open and you will see things from a civilisation lost in the mists of time. Try to remember that when the present-day civilisation are getting in your way and you will be OK.

Do not think that someone opening a door is a nice gesture (they will expect a pound stirling tip) - basically anything that appears to be a polite gesture you will feel "obliged" to tip. It got so bad that we got back on the boat when we went down the nile. The hassle comes from the adults more so that the kids, but a top tip is to go to poundland and buy pencil and pens as the kids can go to school if they have a pen or pencil if they dont have one they dont go to school.

LuLaBells
my parents went to eygpt last year and were eaten alive by mosquito's, they had asked the travel agents about getting jabs or insect repellent and they told them they would be fine so they went without any protection, my mammys got infected and looked awful. they both said they were in agony!
