Winston Churchill said that â€œDemocracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried.â€ It was a step forward, then, for the authoritarian Palestinian Authority to hold elections that by all accounts were conducted fairly. Nevertheless, so long as the Palestinian people continue to be denied by their leaders the freedoms of speech, religion, assembly and the press, the election cannot be considered truly free and democratic.

While democratic outcomes are preferable to the alternatives, the rest of the world is not obligated to have a relationship with elected leaders whose policies and views are dangerous. Adolf Hitler was elected by the German people, but few people would suggest today that the rest of the world should have ignored his genocidal views and treated him as an equal just because he emerged from a democratic process. Similarly, the current Iranian president was elected and is still widely viewed as a pariah because of his threats to destroy Israel and to pursue nuclear weapons in defiance of the rest of the world.

The Palestinian people chose to elect members of an organization whose avowed purpose is the destruction of Israel by violent means. Hamas is recognized throughout the world as a terrorist organization. Since the election, Hamas leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to the Hamas covenant calling for the liberation of all of Palestine and they have made clear it they have no intention of disarming.

Israel now has on its borders a quasi government run by people who oppose negotiations and compromise. Hamas can now take over all of the security services and weapons that have previously been given by Israel and others to the Palestinian Authority to keep the peace. The institutions that were bound by agreements to stop the violence, confiscate illegal weapons, end smuggling and cease incitement are now controlled by the very people most responsible for terror, gun running, and the use of the media and schools to demonize Israel and Jews.

Most of the world understands that Hamas is not a partner for peace and that it is a terrorist group that threatens the stability of the region. The United States and other countries rightly have said that it must recognize Israel and renounce terror before any diplomatic or economic support can be given to the PA. Of course, we went through a similar exercise in 1993 when similar demands were made of the PLO. Yasser Arafat made the necessary commitments in a letter to then Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, but he never matched the words with deeds. The world will be wise not to make the same mistake with Hamas.

This video just confirms everything I thought. They (Hamas) want to dominate, not live in peace! There is no logic or reasoning with these people. The only thing they will recognize is strength and Israel is right to do what she is doing. She should have done it sooner. I do not think any other country would have had as much patience.

It is truly sad that people like this exist on the margins of common reason, are filled with irrational hatred, and can exist in a day and age such as this without a hope of experiencing peace either in heart and spirit or in their land.

What would diffuse their rage? And if they tasted peace, acceptance and good will, would they still reject it?

I despair that we live in a world where this kind of evil can flourish.

Wow, that video made me very sick. It frightens me that such hate exists in the world. They look like they want to take over the world. They just hate the Jews so much because they are right on their doorstep but they just hate anything different than themselves. This is evident by their attacks in India and earlier this year in China. And of course in Europe and the US. They can't even be peaceful within their own faith. The Sunnis and Shiites are always having civil wars with each other too. They are just violent people who love to kill people. All I can say is that it is just very sad.

Please understand that a Muslim's idea of peace is different than everyone else's. In islam there can only be peace when everyone submits to allah, and it doesn't have to be voluntary submission. It can be when people from other beliefs are made into second class citizens.

We knew this all along, my dear. Hamas believes that Palestine (meaning all of Canaan including what is now the nation of Israel) rightfully belongs to the Palestinians and that the Jews who came there in such large numbers after World War II should not have come in the first place, should not have created a Jewish state where they (the Palestinians) were living, and if such a state had to be created from a British colony, it should have been a Muslim state -- theirs. This is what the representatives of the Palestinians have been saying all along. Since they have lost all of the wars fought with Israel, and the uprisings (the Intifada) led by the PLO under Arafat, they are now trying guerrilla warfare, terrorism. They will keep doing one thing and another forever, basically, because that's the way this sort of thing works.

Take a look at the relationship between England and Ireland, for another example of an occupation that lasted for many, many generations. The Irish ended up speaking English, but in the end, Ireland became Ireland again. They even resurrected the old Irish Gaelic language. Northern Ireland is still a bone of contention, though, and probably will continue to be so for a good long while, because both English and Irish live there.

Or take a look at Greece and Turkey. Those two lands were fighting each other back in the Bronze Age when Greece was a collection of city states and Turkey wasn't even occupied by Turks yet. They are two different nations, both united now, but for a long while Turkey occupied all of Greece (and a lot more). Now it doesn't. But they still can't get along because both have people on Cyprus.

It is a much more difficult issue than simply ethnicity or religion. We must all listen to what Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi said when he was working toward India's independence from Great Britain. An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind in the end. But until everyone on all sides sees the truth of that, we shall all go on blinding one another, I'm afraid.

I watched last night, 'Escape from Ham-as'. One of the founders sons was interviewed on FOX news channel. He was in an Israeli prison & saw that ham-as tortured their own in prison. Because they didn't trust each other. So he turned off to Ham-as. He then doubted Islam & studied the Koran side by side with the Bible. And then the verse, 'to love your enemies' turned him to faith in Jesus Christ. So he is living in the US today. He now hates terrorism.
