New regulations will apply as of the coming 1st of September.
256K ADSL will cost 45LE instead of 95LE per month. But usage will be capped or metered to a maximum total of 2GB per month (combined upload and download volume), to exceed this cap you'll have to pay an extra 10LE for each additional 1GB.
Other ADSL speeds packages will remain unaffected (512, 1024 and 2048 KB/S)
This has caused an uproar among ADSL users, the ministry of communication issued two press releases lately saying that the new regulations will affect only new contracts. Existing subscribers will maintain the current status.
This new regulation is aimed mainly at countering illegal ADSL line sharing (Selka) through two ways, 1st reducing the subscription fee to allow more people to use it directly, 2nd limiting the volume of usage to discourage the main subscriber from sharing his connection since it will result in using up and finishing his quota faster.
While the 2GB per months are usually enough for regular or limited personal use covering html browsing, emails, text chat etc... many see it as very limited for other usages that require high volumes like PtoP programs, File downloads/uploads, video chat etc.
So at the end of the day I don't think its a rip off, but it will cause wide discontent among the comunity of ADSL users in Egypt, who used to benefit from the flat rate.
I think its ultimately the fault of people who thought they were smart by breaking the law and sharing their connection with others to reduce costs. Result we are all losing because of the illegal actions of some.
Edit to kalooka: For speeds higher than 256, the Ministry of communication will not intrefere and will leave it to the ISP to design packages (fees, speed and volume) according to market mechanisms . So I guess fees and caps for those categories will remain unchanged.
Note that the Ministry of Communication used to subsidize that old package of 95LE now they are moving their subsidy to the new 45LE package to keep prices down, also most ISPs had already offers for caped packages which were cheaper than unlimited useage.
Edit to Rana and Hope: You are very welcome :)
Edit to Ismaily Rules: But this is what I said, man, cheers. |

Noo, this is not true.
Everything that Msafwat said is right with the exception of one thing, the current 256 subscribtions will remain unaffected. This means that the user will be provided with 2 options: the first is to use the 45 pounds reduction which includes limit download. The second is to keep the terms of your original subscribtion.
In a nut shell, if you have a 256 connection in which you have to pay 95 pounds, you will be able to keep it with the same terms and conditions. If you wish to switch to the other 45 pounds thing, then you will be asked to limit your download to 2 GB a month. |

It will affect Internet cafes and people who offer the link to buildings. This was the main reason they are doing that as the ISP's complained of people making business this way.
Users who has their own account for 1 or 2 pc's will not be affected much if they don't have special use. 2 GB monthly can be enough for 4 if they don't download movies and they don't watch TV on line and always. |
