I see you already have good answers here. However, I wish to add something.
Actually, you can request your superiors in the army to assign you to any other services rather than that of the army. If you are civic and reasonable, your superiors will surely listen to you. The Haredi Jews do not serve in the IDF, yet they serve Israel in other fields. Just like John F. Kennedy said "Don't ask what your country have done for you. But, ask what you have done for your country." |

You know, this is really a sore point for me.
I have dual Israeli and American citizenship. No, you don't lose it.
Listen, you can dodge the draft, and for the rest of your life (that you live in Israel at least) there will be people your age talking about their experience in the IDF, and then they will turn to you, and you will have to say, 'No, I never went, I dodged the draft.' Expect dirty looks. My best friend in the world died serving Israel. I certainly would not want to continue the conversation with you.
If this is something you're comfortable with, then by all means, dodge the draft. Never mind that the army allows you to request non-combatant positions. Convince them you're suicidal. There are a few shrinks who will even attest to this if you pay them enough. |

For every one combat soldier it takes six in the rear to keep him going. Nice safe jobs like kitchen or supply or clerk. However!
for those that have fought, freedom has a taste the protected will never know.

You should just join and be a good patriot. |

You want to keep your Israeli citizenship, but you do not want to defend "your" country.
How strange.
I think most Israelis would agree with me that if you think this way, you should renounce your Israeli citizenship.

I believe you have to join if you are physically and mentally able, for 2 years national service. But I am no expert. |

Ok, I can appreciate reasons why you wouldn't want to join, but you know you should.
I'm Israeli Arab teen, so I'm exempt, but I'm also British and if it was mandatory for me to join then I would do so in a second. I would be proud to serve Britain, even though I'm kinda not a fan of the army!
Do your time, it will serve you well, and you get free college ed in Israel (I think).
PS, how good is your hebrew? Don;t you have to be somewhat fluent to be in the IDF!? |

If you join the IDF you will not lose your American citizenship. In fact you can even raise to the rank of a sergeant. Above that you would have to give up your American citizenship.
I think that you should serve in the IDF. You live in Israel now, how can you close your eyes on Sderot or Ashkelon where the rockets keep on falling? How can you call yourself an Israeli and refuse to serve and protect your fellow citizens against Muslim terrorist threat?
By refusing to serve in the IDF you are letting your people, your country, your fellow classmates -who are risking their lives so that you can breathe the breath of freedom- down. Be proud to join the ranks of the men and women who have shed their blood so that you can grow up in Israel and live out a 2000 year old dream to return to the Holy Land. |

you don't lose american citizenship, where in the world did you get that idea?
also if you get into college i think you can say that, i don't know how it works though
call tzahal (IDF) and ask them if you are in school if you have to join
also, the IDF gives you an experience you won't get anywhere else, and teaches you to be more independent and gives you more life experience rather than just going to college at 17 or 18. You only have to go for three years, two if your a girl, you arent throwing away your entire life. |

Perhaps, you should leave Israel and live the quiet life in a nice safe place like Tahiti . . . Leave it for the fools to stand up for their right to live and be men of honor . . . . Intelligent people like you can always find a place to run to . . . |

You do not lose your citizenship. You do not volunteer - you are drafted. As a result, there is nothing that the US government can do against you |

If you are an Orthodox Jew, you can be exempt. However, you shouldn't take this exemption unless if you are really an Orthodox Jew. It is an honor to join the Israeli army, but if you don't desire that, keep in mind that many Jews in the Diaspora would love to serve their homeland, and you are being a chicken by asking how you can get out of it. |

SERVE LIKE A GOOD BOY, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU ARE HAVING FUN.
And then again there are these..
1. Self-Exile (The Canadian Maneuver)
2. Physical Phake (The Springsteen Gambit or No-Doze about it)
3. Physical for Real (Mono on Mono or "Hello, kiss me... what's your name?")
4. Ageification (The Doctor Method...who?)
5. Dopeification (Whajjuu say, man?)
6. Conscientious Objection (The "peace and non-violence, brother" strategy)
7. Orientation Rearranging ("Sir, you are one HOT sergeant, sir!")
8. In and Out (The Max Klinger Section 8 Clause)
9. Violence (The Last Resort) |

You could try to get a civil service job...
or even get into a non-combat unit. But while faking sick may work, it's considered draft dodging and is generally frowned upon in Israeli society.
Good luck! |

You need to convince them that you are crazy; a friend of mine did that and it worked beautifully! |

I do not know about now... but in 1971 I contemplated living in Israel for a time... I am not a Jew so would not have been required to do the military time... but I believe that if you do join you would forfeit your US citizenship... contact the US embassy for the correct info... |

If you are living in Israel then yes, unfortunatly you have to join by law. When you are at this age it is obliged that you join by the country. I don't think it matters that you have an American cit. but if you really dont want to, you should try to convince them that you are realllllllyy religious! it works!! trust me!
I say dont join them at all never cuz they kill ppl! |
