To convert under Orthodox conversion the answer to both your questions is yes. There is no room for the belief in Jesus in Judaism, neither as Messiah nor as a prophet. As for the price, it is free. However, as you need to learn about the religion first you may need to pay a tuition fee to whatever organization teaches you. |

I'm as Jewish as Moses even though I am an atheist, simply because my mother was Jewish. All you have to do is talk to your friendly neighborhood rabbi. He'll give you all the info. you need. However, if I were you, I'd be prepared for some questioning as to your motives and their seriousness. |

You need to give up your idea about Jesus which is what your parents programmed you to believe. We will reprogram you in one year course.
We have a wonderful oganization that converts many to Judaism. http://www.jewsforjudaism.org/web/mainpages/index.html
Rabbi Bentzion Kravitz performs as many conversions as we can get. The Mikveh charge for adults is 200 dollars and 1 year course that you need to take in your local Synagogue is 500 to 800 dollars depends oh where you go and it covers the whole year. Just remember that nothing is free in life. |

Yes, you have to deny Jesus--we do not believe he was anything other than a teacher.
Yes, it is free. While there may normally be small fees charged for taking classes on Judaism at the synagogue, and while membership fees can be pretty steep, ***NO ONE*** is ever turned away due to financial hardships. |

1. you can't accept that jesus was the christ to be jewish. you don't have to deny his existence, or the fact that other people believe in him. but you can't believe in jesus as the messiah if you are to be jewish.
2. there are certain expenses involved, like getting circumsized if you're a male and you haven't been, or the cost of buying books. but there is no fee for the conversion itself.
to "sign up" go to your local synagogue, preferably saturday morning at about 10:00 am, and join services. you will be welcomed there. then after services they will give you wine and bread and a snack, and you can talk to the rabbi about conversion. |

1/ jews recognize only one god...not god + son of god, or father, son & holy ghost....no idols... also, jesus is recognized as being as rabii or teacher of his time by jews -- he is not denied as a teacher -- but he is not son of god...educated people don't believe mary was a virgin either altho i'm sure she was a nice jewish girl... ; )
2/ no -- lessons for anything are not free in this world....but if you can't afford the lessons they will be free...you have to talk w/ rabbi to work out a payment schedule or reduced fee...
EDIT: religious school for my kids costs $$$$ at temple...fees are seperate from others... |

1) Yes. You have to abandon any foreign religious doctrine prior to becoming Jewish, Christian or not. You don't need curse the guy out loud - simply abandon belief in his messiahship or his being G-d incarnate. If you still buy into that, then Judaism simply isn't for you.
2) There might be fees involved for the services provided by the Beis Din (rabbinical court), and of course, you'll probably want to buy the books they'll have you study to prepare for conversion. But if you really wanted to convert, and money was a serious issue, you'd be able to find help.
However, if you're already a Christian, and don't wish to discard that belief, I recommend sticking with it, and not bothering with conversion to Judaism. Nowhere does it say you'll go to Hell for not being Jewish (one of the reasons we don't actively seek converts), and if the conflict persists, you'll probably wind up unhappy.
I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide.
PS: Can't say I understand all these thumbs-down. Belief in Jesus simply is NOT a part of Judaism. Anybody who tells you otherwise is a liar or a moron. Jesus is no more a part of Judaism (he was a Jew - but that's not the same thing - Trotsky was also a Jew, but communism is completely against the Torah) than Buddha is a part of Christianity. If you try to reconcile the two, you'll only come out confused. I have no problem with people being Christian; but pretending Christianity and Judaism are the same religion denies what makes each one unique, and is therefore an insult to both. |

The only way in finding out is by consulting with a rabbi. His consultations are free. |

Good morning, Mr. Hart. I hope that you are enjoying your wrestling days to its finest.
Now, please allow me to answer your question for you.
It is broken down in stepps so that you do understand me very well:
1. Consulting with your rabbi:
- - (a) it is mandatory that you go to the local Orthodox Rabbi so that he can tell you what you must and what you can't do for the rest of your life.
Here is an example:
- - (1) On friday nights, saturday morning and every single holiday that there is you are required to go to the synagogue but foot.
- - (2) Pressing any button that there is in the elevator, during Shabbat, is against the Jewish law.
- - (3) As food is concerned, you must have TWO sets of refridgerators and freezers one is strictly for the milk and dairy products and the other one is for the rest of food. In this one you can place chicken, red meat or fish in this fridge.
- - (4) Your table setting must be kosher by the Rabbi. If you are inviting some Kosher people over to your house, please make sure that you do not mix the dairy products, like milk, with chicken, ham,red meat , or any product that you find that comes from a pig. The kosher people will most likely want to eat a nice piece of fish, served with rice and a mixed salad. Because the eggs are neutral they go well in this dinner.
Just one piece of advice: whatever you do, always listen to the rabbi and should you do have any questions, please feel free to consult with him.
As to how much it costs to get converted that, Mr. Hart, you will talk strictlywith the rabbi.
Have an excellent weekend. |

You wouldn't have to deny that Jesus existed but you would have to deny the idea of him as messiah. For us, he was just a teacher, a young Jewish man who challenged some of the religious dogma, but he was born a Jew, and he died a Jew. Jesus never rejected Judaism, despite the many Christians who insist to the contrary.
In terms of payment; many synagogues have membership fees, and the money often goes towards the upkeep of the building etc. We never have collections in the actual synagogue, unlike in churches.
Good luck if you go for it! |

it doesn't cost a penny to convert, but be warned, a proper rabbi will ask you serious questions about why you want to become Jewish and will try to convince you that you are making a mistake. in fact, there is a rule that an orthodox rabbi will only agree to convert someone, after making sure they are really sincere in their reasons for becoming Jewish (e.g. if you want to become Jewish to marry a Jewish girl - that is not a valid reason). and if after discouraging you three times, you still come back to the rabbi and say you want to become Jewish, then he has to agree to convert you.
out of interest, why do you want to become Jewish anyway? |

You can do pretty much whatever you want in today's world.... so popstars like madonna study some form of "kabala" as if its witchcraft or something.....
So, if you want to become Jewish, someone will be around to do whatever you want them to do, and you can call yourself Jewish. There's a whole bunch of ppl in the Dimona area of Israel (who happen to be black, but that's totally irrelevant)... and although they have no Jewish background, training or education... or even real Jewish affiliation, they are content to call themselves "Black Hebrews"... So self proclaimed Jewis is easy...
The question is... for what purpose?
From our (the Jewish) side, we are NOT a proseletyzing religion... nor xenophobic. We don't seek converts, and don't hate "outsiders". Those who feel a genuine desire to commit to the lofty values, accept the admittedly serious and weighty responsibilities of Judaism are welcomed with welcome arms.
Forgive me, but the tone of your post sounded like it was a pretty superficial thing to you... You may be a great guy, but Judaism isn't looking to "add" superficial, non-committed members. If you're more serious than I (miss)read, then you can look into it.
Jesus was a man... not a deity, god, demigod, or anything more than a flesh and blood human being. If believing more than that is important to you.. great!... but that would already show that you're not really ready to become a committed, true Jew. That's fine.. again-- we have no need to "convert and save the world".... our construct wants and needs non-Jewish members... and not in a second-class way.
Finally, there's no centrally ordained fee, tax, or whatever. There is a tremendous amount to learn.... its not just like joining the boy scouts. The hundreds of hours of learning need to be given by a person, its not a quick read in a "judaism for dummies" book. So the teacher(s) and a few ritual things (new circumcision, for example) have people who are trained and qualified to do them. They work.. they get paid. |

Call your local Synagogue and make an appointment to speak with the Rabbi to ask your questions.
To convert to Judaism, you have to be sincere and serious about it.
To answer your questions:
1. As far as Jesus being the Messiah, yes. They see Jesus as a prophet only. Jesus was Jewish.
2. Free as in what? You don't have to pay anything to join any religious organization. |

I have starred your question because I am only interested to learn more about the jewish religion. I have also heard that one must pay ( I guess maybe its like a tax or donation to the synogoge) or you pay for your lessons, which would be like a tax or a donation. I am trying to search for the answer, maybe another will come along that knows.
Edit: this should help you , it explains all the money that needs to be paid, but sometimes newlyweds, or the elderly who are on a low income are given a break from paying. Also if one has a limited monthly income, you can see an administrator who will determine the amount of money you make and take a percentage of that. It is a tax or tithe. The brochure actually will give you very good information. Just make sure to follow the page numbers. As they are copied from a book .
edit: Usually the cost of religious school is billed separately.
Maybe this is what the woman on the bus meant? |

You can convert and "become" in practice and faith only,
not in actual flesh and blood,
as in the case of Ruth
who was a Moabite; but said to Naomi "...your people shall be my people and your G-d shall be my G-d..."
ie. if you we're born Swedish, you're still of Swedish descent after you "convert" but will be accepted as one who is born as a child of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob.
Cheers

My impression is that the question is not serious.
I also see that it has brought a medieval anti-Semite answerer out from under his rock. |
