Inno I don't even try to give thumbs up or down. I woud rather just write to the person and tell them how much they helped me.

Moreoften than not, i give thumbs up than down.
If its an opinion and i agree with that opinion, then ill thumb it up. If i dont agree, i leave it alone.
If the answer is the biggest load of rubbish ive read then ill thumb it down.
Sometimes if someone is getting thumbed down for making what i believe is a valid point, ill sympathisize and thumb it up.
If i see an answer of someone i disagree with on principle, ill hestitate before thumbing down and give it some thought.
I wont thumb someone down just cause i dont like them.
Thats like the president keeping someone in their position jus cause theyre loyal to him...

I give all my fans and contacts a thumbs up no matter what they say! Even if I disagree with them. They chose me as a fan and I chose them as a contact, because I thought they were interesting. And they thought the same about me.

I rarely give a thumbs down. The reason being that it means something if they win a best answer, but nothing if they don't! It's a stupid thing these thumbs ups or - downs! It makes you feel unworthy of answering. This is the reason why I am very selective in what questions I should answer. I stay away from the political ones, because I know I'll get loads of thumbs downs there. And I stay away from personal questions as well. It's strange how a simple thing like the thumbs down can affect your participation here, right?

It must be a real stupid answer for me to give a thumbs down, because then I don't want ANYONE to take notice of it. I give a star for all my contacts to follow and answer as well.

PS: Some people do it to p!ss you off, but I'm way passed that kind of insults.

Edit: I always give a thumbs down to people that copy and paste information instead of putting it in their own words.

Edit: I know my answer sounds unfair and that I favor some, but that's why the thumbs ups and - downs are there for. To pick favorites!

I agree with Tediby, I remember when myself, Alf and others used to received 10 to 20 thumbs down an answer when criticising the ANC and the New South Africa, to me it worked more as a motivation to continue posting than to cave in to the denialists.
Otherwise I rate similiarly to what Porgy described.

i give thumbs up if i aggree with an opinion, in order to emphasize the answer. and then of course thumbs down if i don't - but i'd first consider the question and whether the answerer has a point. just because i dont agree with it, doesn't necessarily make it wrong.

i agree with you that some people use it for the wrong reasons - as you mentioned an opinion on a favourite colour! i think those people are more on a power trip than anything else.

in regard to contacts - i think it's natural that you're more likely to thumbs up their answers, as you probably share the same viewpoint - hence you're contacts! mand you know where they're coming from as you "build" a relationship, be it a virtual one!

yea I have fallen victim to a few odd thumbs down myself
Seen others get them too, for no real reason

thumbs up or down is a personal choice
we just have to deal with it...... try not to let it bother us

Dont do thumbs up/down,starring questions and/or reporting. What is the point? It may have meant something if the Asker couldnt chose a best answer but that is not the case so why bother. I agree with Bull when he says at one stage there was a concerted effort by the ANC morons to thumbs down any answer he or I gave but -am I bothered.

Technically these thumbs are for how much effort and quality is put into an answer and what it actually says should come second. But honestly, who doesn't thumbs down/up for personal reasons. I mean, I wouldn't do that for a favourite colour. Maybe for opinions on music, like if someone slams my fav. band. And of course if you just get annoyed by that user. Some really pIss me off. Not here, everyone in SA section is cool.

If I like the answer I give a thumbs up and if I really really don't like the answer I give it a thumbs down.

I think some people here look at the Avtar and give a thumbs down.

I think its fantastic to have thumbs down, just think how boring life will be if everyone agrees with what you say...ho-hum!!!

Innocentia - I was listening to radio 702 today more specifically about what people thought about the weak and incoherent Thabo Mbeki speech, its amazing, the white callers thought he needed to do much more, the black callers thought it was fantastic and left it at that...Why?...because you are gullible...criticism is a crucial and necessary ingredient in a democratic society...exactly how Bull 8 has said. I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with me on anything and that includes the choice of my colour, or whether they think i dont like my mother, its their Democratic right!!!

It is exactly what- King Of kings, indicated, however you do get the odd troll; who runs along any category and marks Thumbs down no matter what. Oh did I mention?...Will find the need to turn you in too, for no reason at all, but you seldom see that in the SA group.

Yes I have also noticed that .....Cakes calls them the trolls but I think she means "drolle"....droe drolle. I think there are just a few *****holes here that try to stir and be just plain mean. I personally give thumbs up to a question I like and a thumbs down to one that i don't. But I also find that lately (because I "know" a couple of regulars) I just do not rate a question from a regular that I know and I personally think his or her answer is el crappo. but when I asked the question I will rate answer anyway I feel like.

Now as you know with my answers I seldom get thumbs up and lots of down and I don't care.
I get thumbs up when I visit the main board. However, the only way you can get a thumbs down for an answer like that is if it were from people that disagreed with you on another subject.

I give TU if i agree with the answer , or like Tsepo if i have learnt something....and i say so in my posting....eg i agree with so&so....
I have not given a TD , yet , as i believe everyone has a right to their opinion , howevere if i do disagree , i say so directly in my posting....

I give tu's to sincere answers even if they may be wrong. I only give td's (not STD's thank God...LOLL!!!) to abusive answers, or people who answer with "Who cares?" etc. Why do they answer if they do not care, the two-point whores as Styvies and I call them!!! If an answer is so wildly inaccurate and wrong as to be misleading and/or absurd I will td as well. I alway give tu's to the nice and friendly answerers like you though!
Anyway, I am afraid there is a lot of dishonesty in these answers to your question, as I have noticed who tu's and td's by the timing of the answers. Certain people here are speaking with a forked tongue and we all know who they are!!!!

i decide based on my standards and my principles. but sometimes i do consider things like what's the trend...or what would benefit others too... and most of all i decide according to what would give smile to God! that would be my standard of decision...
