You know "H", you would be surprised at how many foreigners batter the image of SA and most of them haven't even been there. The media has really gone all out to expose the brutality and hideous crimes in SA and who can blame them because it's all true. Yet despite that, I feel angry when people trash my country, disappointed when people say that they will never go there and sad when I see the reality of it all. Do you recall some years ago when NZ staged a demonstration against the Springboks because they were accused of being racists from aparthied SA? Well, most people have not forgotten it yet and that makes me sad. |

I feel sad, Australia is a beautiful place. We don't have any civil wars or anything like that, we're just a laid back, take life as it comes type of country.
I think I'm dam lucky to live here. |

The same way you feel when someone says something stupid about your siblings. You can fight with each other as much as you like, but someone else should just try making a comment... |

peed off...but then again, it's their choice, but they shouldn't have chosen that time to say it when i would be there. i'd also ask them if they'd like it if i said something not nice about there country...they wouldn't, so they should keep quiet. |

I think usually that they are letting one bad experience cloud their judgment about an entire country. Also, that they are sometimes imposing the standards of their own country onto another's and not being open-minded enough to enjoy or at least appreciate a new experience.
I've been to South Africa twice and, overall, loved it. There are several aspects of my experience that I did not enjoy, and some people who I did not enjoy dealing with. But I would never use those few experiences to speak negatively about the entire country. |

I feel the same way I feel when people who live here have nothing good to say about it. Pissed off! I tell them to get the heck out. |

I don“t get upset.
If he was a victim of crime or was irritated by the same things that we are then I can fully understand.
If he“s just being a pr!ck then that“s the end of the conversation. |

I feel like they can just stay home. I don't think we have anything to prove to anyone else. And I don't think they have anything to prove to us. |

Experience has shown that they know very little and aminly from what they read ( mostly from prejudiced sites or newspapers). So, in main I don't give a hoot.
But if they talk from personal experience, I engage them to sympathise and try to gather information for authorities. |

I get really mad and it pisses me well off.
I'm always on the defend for south - Africa.
The thing that gets me the most is that the America's, Europe etc.. Has been at the same place as we are now a long time ago ( with crime, racism etc.) But all that seems to be lost and forgotten. |

It's irritating when the person is in this country.
But then I just tell them to leave. |

My first question to him is: Have you ever been to SA ? A lot of these ou on this side of the equator have no idea what Africa is all about. It seems to be a square metre piece of land somewhere. Lions and tigers on the streets, etc.
If he has been there, I try to put his thoughts on the right path, and justify what he feels so negatively. Usually I can convince him that all is better than he thought it was.
If he has never been near the continent, then I tell him to go there first before he judges.
How can you judge a banana if you have never eaten one, silly monkey. |
