Ek is Afrikaans, so ek sal sê my Afrikaans is redelik goed.
Translation: I am Afrikaans, so I'd say my Afrikaans is pretty good.
But then again, so is my English. It helps growing up in Natal & having half your family & most your friends being English.... |

I know what you mean, man. I can understand Afrikaans quite well , dont know some words , but i usually pick up the gist of what is being said. When it comes to speaking , im terrible, have to pause too often to think of a word , so usually if im asked something in Afrikaans , i usually answer in English , but im learning more now as most of my co-workers speak afrikaans and they usually translate when they see im looking a bit lost , so that helps... |

Brilliant. :-)
It is my first language.
And I am teaching my son Afrikaans and English. He is 21 months old, and can already speak a little bit of both!
Now how is that for a proud mum? |

Mine was good, but when you don't speak a language often enough you loose it. My kids battled with Afrikaans at school, but they got through. They had all this "met ander worde", even I could not understand what it was all about. |

I think that my Afrikaans is pretty good. I grew up in Worcester in the Boland. If you cannot speak Afrikaans there, you are LOST !! Walk into any shop or business: "Hallo, kan ek help ?" (can I help you). Speak to them in English, and they are totally stymied. Most of our subjects in High School were taught in Afrikaans because our English class was so small, that we had to join in with the Afrikaans A Class. I think that we understood better what the teachers said in Afrikaans, because their English sucked ! |

I matriculated in Hoerskool (how do I get the two dots over the first "o") Hoogenhout in Bethal, Eastern Transvaal. Moved to Durbs, did my tertiary education in English. My mom is a Scot and my dad an Afrikaner. Soooo ek is lekker tweetalig.... Have a few Afrikaans speaking buddies over here but they have lost their identity and battle to speak their mother tongue. Poor Sods LoL. But I still love them. Sterkte mense. |

My afrikaans is uitstekend, alhoewel dit nie my eerste taal is nie. |

you know...I have no idea how I passed matric as well. My afrikaans was really bad. Although I do wish I could have spent more time and effort on the language. And besides.....even if I did learn it well....I wouldnt use it as often as Afrikaaners would. And afrikaans is not commonly spoken in Durban (where I grew up) like it is in Cape Town. |

Average.
I understand Afrikaans perfectly but speak it with a thick accent.
My inlaws speak to me in Afrikaans and I speak to them in English.
*Edit*
Christella J, judging by your response to this question and numerous others, it seems that you are severely lacking in the intellectuality department, could you please explain to me how it is possible for you to state that your mother tongue or primary language is not Afrikaans and yet under source state "Afrikaner"? You are truly deluded. |

Not so good because of the time spent out of SA. One parent only speaks afrikaans when communicating with family.
My first language is english but I aim to 'spruce up' my afrikaans. |
