How many times have you been asked?

What country in South Africa are you from? I mean DUH South Africa IS a country! So far in 2 weeks in New Zealand I have been asked 3 times. Mostly people know about SA coz of all the other Saffirs here, but I mean COME ON! :-D

Nobody has asked me that ....yet. But my favourite is:

"My friend Sara lives in South Africa... do you know her?"

Yeah sure I do :)

Nakynak
You will be supprised.. When we "black people" were accepted into white schools for the first time...

The questions that white kids asked were scary... These are people who were born in South Africa and new nothing about people who live ten minutes away.......

Advertising companies in SA also miss the mark.. the only idea of black people they have is of people they see at the Taxi rank or the auntie who cleans the dishes... First South Africans need to Know about South Africans and not perseived ideas about each other.... (Slowly changing)

For example when I Invite my white friends to my house for dinner with my other black buddies.. you can see a bit of tention there.. Like "What if they kill us" ha ha ha

I'm not supprised that people from New Zealand would ask such questions, since in those countries. the only thing they see of Africa Is the Wild and black women with no Bras..

... I know someone who was an Exchange student in Germany and the kids there thought he was from a royal African family or something that baceme rich from selling goats. Cause how could he afford a plane ticket in the first place.. the list goes on...

But it was based on what they see on TV.....

I know someone who worked in Ireland for the UN to curb Xhenephobic views of the citizens there... I think this was a good initiative, even the way they implemented it was so cool.. The problem with Ireland is that the first time they saw a black person was probably in 1996... So it's abvious that they would know nothing about Africa or any African Country....

These guys in Ireland went to almost every comunity making presentations to the communities .. and giving QnA sessions so that people's perceptions were eliminated to facts...

So the underlying problem in the world is that there is just too much information .. But there are very few channels for giving the right information to people.

bean
How is it going there?

Im sure they just dont understand, like I know nothing about countries North of SA.

Spunkfight
I'm from Wales which - in its time - has been located in England, Scotland, Ireland, multiple island-locations, and all over Western Europe.

I just think it's funny.

Yip, welcome to the club. It ranges from what country in SA does one come from to the assumption that Africa is a small little country with just a few towns, that all the inhabitants know each other!!

Virago
Maybe they're confused because South Africa is in Southern Africa which comprises several countries???

Haven't had that one but was asked in the UK by a American how can I be white and come from Africa. It ended up in a 2hour conversation to do the explanation.

*add*
Sheridan I know how that feels I've been asked that aswell. I have actualy said yes and they like REALLY, and you say YE just over the hill about 15 mud huts away. And the worst of all they believe you.

Bwahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!! SAFFIRS!!!!!
ROFLMAO(Rolling on the floor laughing my @ss off!!)

Just don't substitute that ''s'' with a ''k''!

jimbo.c
So duh ..... does this mean you come from South Africa ??

Away With The Fairies
I'm from the UK so I've never been asked that question.

Glad to hear it's not just a problem Canadians have with Americans! But sorry to hear you have it too. I know that my generation of Canadians were only taught a tiny bit about pre-WWII Belgian Congo and if anyone was to blame I think it was the education system. Nowadays, however, with t.v. and same day news it should not be as pronounced as it is. Seems that the Soaps and sit coms are more important to most. Pretty sad commentary on contemporary man.

Skyli - they charged me a fortune to ride an elephant. How lucky you were to get to school for free like that! lmao

none ,I'm just take a tour on this section....

Echo Scout Dog
no, but when i was in school in NZ i was asked:
Speak some african for me
What tribe are you from?

and generally things involving running around in the bush hunting wild animals, its kinda annoying at first, but then you realise you can have lots of fun with it.

Reb Da Rebel
Just deny you're from South africa and read about the UK and pretend you're from there ...then you wont have to answer q's on a place you dont like. Drift from SA, let it be a distant memory... and once I get a Bots address I'll welcome your weather forecast emails on NZ and Bots. Congrats either way on your successful move.
