There are 3 kinds of "love".
Friendship love (phileo).
Romantic and sexual love (eros)
Agape (sacrificial) love that gives and expects nothing in return; and loves even one's own enemies. (This is Christ's love).
We all have friends, pals, we enjoy their company, but it is not romantic; can be sacrificial.
The romantic/physical love is just that; it may last for a moment or for years, but can be fleeting and empty when absent of the agape or phileo.
The agape love; this is the love Christ has for his Bride; the love a man and woman in marriage strive for. It is possible through knowing Jesus. It esteems the other as better than yourself. It is not only for marriage. It is the kind of love we should strive for one another as human beings as part of something bigger than ourselves. |
