I fly down often. I am normally packed to the brim with loads of gifts. My baggage has never been stolen, misplaced or items missing. (touch wood)
Ironically though, it HAS happened to me twice in Europe.
The last trip, I even left a suitcase unlocked. I was in such a frenzy as a snow storm broke out which meant I had to leave much earlier to get to the airport on time. I forgot the locks for my suitcase and simply sent them through as is.
Items in your hand luggage have a higher risk of being stolen.
One more thing....You take a higher risk if you take a connecting flight.
Customs have a right to open your suitcases, clingwrapped or not. They normally leave a document in your bag if they have. |

Well first off don't take excessive cool technology and bling bling with you.
Pack what you need!
You don't really have to worry though, luggage theft isn't that bad here...yet.
But if you are really worried then being one of the first to claim baggage helps, if you get there in time! |

You'll be fine!! If someone is determined to nick your stuff there is nowt you can do to stop it!
Make sure you take change of clothes and other necessaries in hand luggage.
MOST IMPORTANTLY - GOOD INSURANCE POLICY that gives you lost/stolen luggage coverage. |

You do have so much bag value per bag checked in if you are an international passenger. It's written in small print on your ticket envelope. But, just know that flying suks any more. I had everything snooped through in Paris and they overlooked repacking my expensive video camera batteries (or borrowed the batteries). At least the Americans leave a nice little piece of paper in the bag to let you know they were concerned about your underwear and stuff. Carry your expensive stuff onboard. Observe the pocketknife, nail clippers and meds in your suitcase. |

Normally it's not the whole bag that goes missing, just stuff in the bags. So, seal your bags with cable ties or, as is often done in South Africa, seal the whole thing with Cling wrap. It works very well.

Keep valuables eg cameras, jewelry and extra money in hand luggage. I had a friend who had only the £250 that she had in her bag stolen, and the rest was left.
Also as mentioned earlier, wrap the whole bag in clingwrap, that way it wont be tampered with, cause the criminals who work at bagage handling at the airport knows if someone finds a bag with damaged clingfilm they get blamed first.
Take the clingfilm with you and before you check it in at the airport wrap it in clingfilm. A few people (first timers) might giggle at what your doing, but they wont be giggling when they arrive in SA and find their bag has been snooped through.
PS, locks dont work, cause if your bag is made from canvas or other soft material, they will simply cut it open along the edges, and they do it so cleanly you wont notice until you get to the hotel. |

Get a comprehensive insurance.Tie your cases with string
thieves hate string too fiddley to undo. Keep vital things with you.Clothes can always be replaced. |

Get a few of those lockable luggage straps with the code numbers on it. Take about 5 or 6. That delays any would-be thief, and makes your suitcase so easy to identify when it comes of the plane. |

Dont put any vabules in the hold luggage. Keep your hand luggage in sight at all times. Also you need to be careful for pickpockets at the airport. When my dad travels he usually wheres shorts with pockets under his trousers and puts his wallet in his shorts pockets. Dont keep large sums of cash on you and dont display valuble items either |

jo'burgh airport had been under heavy criticism last year for baggage theft and workers were caught in the act by camera footage on a local tv news programme...after that basically u'll be just unlucky to be a victim; last year i carried my laptop from new york in my hold baggage and found it in one piece at home after arriving though jo'burg--------so u aint got nothing to worry about....turns out to be Schipol airport u should be worried about(it conveniently 'sent' my bags to morrocco nd i stiil hvnt got it back)
to be on the safe side..anything expensive u go on board with;ok..but no sharp objects or liquids over 100ml |

Whatever is of great value, have it on you or with you at all times. The rest, tag it, bag it, AND THEN GET SOME LOCKING DEVICE OR 2 ON IT.
I recently came over and didn't follow these rules, and paid a dear price for that error. Got the bag, but some content just got 'redistributed' on the way. |

I would advise you to not use expandable luggage as they can cut the expandable area and zip it back. But just pray because it can happen to anyone, whether you fly business, first or economy.
All the best and safe journey. |

Have your luggage shrink wrapped at the airport - that seems to deter most from easily opening and going through suitcases. |

Request African handlers, only the whites steal in S Africa. They are horrible...and relentless. The whites of S Africa are born thieves, and steal all of their lives. |

I flown a couple times in SA, & have never had baggage problems. I don't think you have to worry about your baggage being stolen at the airport, but it is true, that it might get stolen somewhere else. Robberies aren't uncommon in SA.
Just be weary at all times & don't trust anyone. |

not true what turniton6 said...i've gone on SAA pretty much all the time, my baggage was still there. just keep it simple, don't make it too flashy...keep all your flashy as hand luggage.
EDIT: well shame for you turniton...i hope i didn't waste your energy just to look something up for me...boohoo |

Just use common traveller caution that you would use travelling anywhere in the world. Baggage theft is everywhere, from New York to Rio, Paris to Plymouth, Cape Town to Durban. |

Take a small bag on board with all the things you would hate to be stolen, I always do this and never worry if my main case is lost or stolen, as replaceable stuff in it. |

South Africa is so hot u will only need a couple of T-shirts. If they get stolen then its no big deal. |
