I'm going to Egypt pretty soon, what's important to know?

places to avoid, places to visit, places not worth seeing, what about transport is it good or bad? what should I wear, do most ppl speak a little bit of English or should I buy an Arab-English dictionary? What can I do about the boys who harass female tourists? Can I tell them to get lost or should I just ignore them? Is a fake wedding ring sufficient enough to push them away?

I am very disappointed to see what some of the other people have written here, some of them have been rather extreme in their comments.

You will find that English is spoken in most places, except if you go off the beaten track. If you'd like to, it would be well received if you leant some small phrases in Egyptian.
Some of the musts to see are =
The Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Hatchepsut's Temple, Philea Temples, the Aswan Dam, & Abu Simbel (depending on where you are going).
I dont know how you are travelling or what parts of Egypt you are going to, but some simple rules are =
Be confident, be careful of your belongings, drink plenty of water (bottled only), use sunscreen, wear a hat. I would also avoid the nightclubs, as you would attract the wrong kind of attention. I have worn a wedding ring in the past & it does help some, but a woman travelling alone will always have hassle. Just be polite & confident & you'll be ok.
Truthfully, i never felt safer than when i was living in Egypt, i mean i wouldnt walk in the street at night in London alone, but in Luxor, apart from odd hassling, i was always safe. If you do have a problem, go to the ladies, they will stand by you & scare off the hassler.
As for the Boys, be very careful, some of them are just so cute & dam good actors, the clubs & pubs in Luxor are full of them.
BUT there are really nice & honest people in Egypt, just some who give it a bad name, as in all countries.
If you want any more info, do email me.
I hope you enjoy your holiday, i loved it when i went, & i made some good friends along the way.

don't drink the water and use botteled water to brush your teeth because it can give you a tummy bug and it ain't nice i went to egypt last summer its great !

If your American I suggest you make sure you know the phone number to the American embassy and where it is located. Also the embassy will be able to tell you where it is not safe to go, and what is appropriate attire.

Heres the link to the Embassy http://cairo.usembassy.gov/
It would be a good idea to look over the site.

Another great site is the Department of State website, they have some good travel information on there,

Here is the link

Here the link to the Egypt page

look at the mummies and tombs if you can and bring a lot of light clothing.

Here are some great places to visit

don't drink the water unless it's filtered and don't wander alone

Our government provides fairly good security information. Check that out, then Google Egypt Travel.

The one very important thing you need to know is where is the nearest American consulate?

Like any Middle-Eastern state, Egypt too, has its own customs , rituals and tradition.
I would urge you not to go alone out there at night, always make sure you have company with you.
Beaware of keeping your belongings safe at all times, especially your American pass port. Same goes for your travel cheques and money.
If you like to be acomidating, you could wear the traditional female wear which is so custom in this region. It would probably make a very high impression on them. Remember not to socialize with men, as they do not allow to have contact with females other than with their married once.
It's not wise shaking hands with them. As they have different customs. If you become aquainted with a good lady friend, the usually custom of greeting is few kisses on each of your cheek. I know so from my Eygyptain friend that i have been close with for years.

Travel sites
Eygptain Museum
Eygptains Pyramides
Cairo
River Nile river if you can go there for a day view.

it looks like ur mocking, but don't worry, u probably won't be harassed, we have the "Don't harass ******" rule

egypt is safer than any city i have been to .i will answer your questions one by one.
avoid going to far away places without company .
if you go on a tour , you will move with the group.the Pyramids , the Sphinx , and the Egyptian Museum are worth seeing.
public transport is not good , too crowded even for us .
taking a cab is ok , better with company in the evenings .
everybody knows English and is ready to help even with body language .you dont have to buy a dictionary , English is 1st foreign language in schools .boys may harrass a` female if she shows too much of her body or attracts attention.
Ignore any harrassment .
no one would look at your fingers .
just be natural .
enjoy your trip .

Dye your hair brown for starters if you're blonde & don't go anywhere, even stray the slightest bit!

Make sure you're always with people you know & stay close!

Wear reasonably modest clothing, not short shorts or mini skirts.

You will be abducted & used as a white sex slave...it's happened before.

But apart from all that...don't get paranoid & enjoy yourself & have fun!

Smith
dont buy too much crap there :P

You should learn to say in Arabic: "There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet". It might save your life.

Don't drink the water. And bring noseplugs - Egyptians smell pretty raunchy from what I remember.
