Yes you need both, if you have a US issued passport. I have included this passage from the US Department of State's webpage re: travel to Egypt. I also included the website to the US Dept of State for travel, and the Egyptian embassy where you can obtain your visa. I travel frequently and find that it a lot easier to send your passport with the application and money to the embassy. They will affix the visa and mail your passport back to you. When you fly into Cairo you will be in line for a long time for your visa if you don't get it ahead of time. I just went 2 years ago, and had a fantastic time, easy sailing right through with my visa ahead of time. Contact me if you need some travel ideas while you are there. Happy Travels!
EGYPT - *Passport and visa required. Visas may be obtained upon entry from the Entry Visa Department at the Travel Documents, Immigration and Nationality Administration or most major ports of entry. Entry visa is required for any foreigner arriving in Egypt for purposes other than tourism (e.g. work, study). Tourist visas (single-/multiple-entry) are valid for 90 days. HIV test required for study and work permits. Dependents are no longer exempt—spouses must also get tested, as well as any children aged 15 or older. Students are exempt from visa fees. For specific requirements, consult the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, 3521 International Court, NW, Washington, DC 20008 (202/895-5400) or the nearest Consulate General: CA (415/346-9700), IL (312/828-9162), NY (212/759-7120), or TX (713/961-4915). |

Yes and yes, you need both. You need a passport to even get on the plane out from the U.S., but you can buy the visa once you get into the Egyptian airport.
Btw, Egypt is one of the cheapest places you can go to. For one person, you can spend appx $4,000 usd. Airfare is appx $1500, accommodations to live very well are appx $1500, and you can take $1000 spending cash to live like royalty. That's $4000. Compare that to Europe, which would run you appx $10,000 usd.
Egypt is a bargain.... but don't shop alone. That's when people get you, raising prices just 'cause you're a tourist. Make a friiend there first, and let this friend do all the bartering for you. You will save A LOT that way, trust me.
I was in Khan El Khalili bazaar in Cairo, and pretended to be deaf so that no one would talk to me. My friend did all the bartering, and I got some good buys. I gave my friend some cash and stayed in the taxi while he and the driver went to barter for a shisha pipe. Before leaving, he said to me, "Do not leave the vehicle!" I wound up spending $18 usd total for a tall shisha pipe and 6 boxes of shisha. One would pay appx $100 in the States for that!
Don't shop alone and you'll be fine. |

You do need a passport regardless of your nationality.
As for Visas you have three different categories.
1- Citizen exempt from Visas (Mostly countries from the Arab Gulf Area)
2- Citizen who do need Visas but can get them either from Egyptian consulates abroad or upon arrival from the port of Entry (Airport or Sea port or border crossing) Those are mainly EU countries - USA - Latin American Countries and a few Asian countries.
3- Citizen who are required to obtain visas from Egyptian consulates prior to their departure including African countries - most Asian countries.
So if you are a US passport holder as I presume... you do need a Visa to enter Egypt, even as a tourist, and you can apply for it either from the nearest Egyptian consulate (Usually needs a couple of days for processing), or you can get one on the spot upon your arrival at the port of entry... there is a fee of around $15 involved. |

You will need a passport, even just to leave the US. You can either get a visa from the Egyptian Embassy in D.C., or you can go the easy route and get one from the Egyptian airport you land at. It's a small fee and you'll probably have to exhange some money to pay it in Egyptian pounds, but it's not difficult.
Have lots of fun!
Delores: I loved Khan El Khalili!! Luckily I had visited an alabaster museum and learned the differences between hand made and machine made items (SOOOO obvious!). When we went (DH is Egyptian) a shopkeeper pulled us into his store (realizing I was American) and I fell in love with an alabaster vase that had been dyed blue (gorgeous!). So he wanted 65 pounds for it and swore up and down it was handmade. It clearly was not. So when he heared me tell my husband "He's a liar, let's go!" he slowly talked it down to 15 pounds! That's less than three dollars. The trick if you go yourself is to pretend like you're not interested. That does all the bartering for you, lol! |

you need a passport
and for the visa:
One to 3 Month Visas can be purchased on arrival at the Airport from most countries. Approx. $15 US for a one month Visa.
You will need to have your money ready to go to the Bank on arrival. They will sell you two stamps to place in your passport on a blank page before going through customs. |

Yes you need a passport valid for at least 6 months. And you need a visa. You can get the visa from the Egyptian consulate nearest to you in USA, or you can get it upon arrival at Cairo airport. |

If you plan to live there for a while then you would require to have a visa. If all you plan to do is visit then a passport is what you would need. |

As a US citizen and coming only for a brief visit, you will not need to get a visa beforehand and can get one at the airport. Of course, call the Egyptian embassy in DC just to make sure.
Some nationalities, like Italian and German, don't even need a passport if they're coming for tourism.
I hope this helps. |

I don't think you need a visa to go as a tourist. |

No, you do not need a visa. A visa is if you are going to live there; not just visit. |
