Depending on your nationality you may be eligible for a visit visa on arrival. If so, go out the airport and take the Big Bus Tour of Dubai. It starts from the Deira City Centre shopping mall. It's a good way to get an overall idea of the city, and you can hop-on hop-off at places that take your interest. Because you only have a few hours, I'd recommend doing that because there is a guide on the bus to tell you all about the city.
If you are not eligible for the visit visa on arrival, then you're stuck in the airport. But Dubai airport is not the worst airport in the world to be stuck in. There is a huge duty free shopping area (although, quite expensive for a so-called ''duty free'') so you can go shopping, or even just browse.
There are restaurants and there is a bar at the ''Irish Village'' restaurant, so you can have a few drinks. Don't get too drunk, though. It's an Islamic country and I've known people who got arrested and deported for being too drunk in the airport!
Take an Mp3 music player or iPod and some reading material. You can buy books and magazines there.
Find out from the UAE consulate in your country if you're eligible for the visit visa before you go.

Oooh, make the most of it! Dubai's a gorgeous place but small so you'd be crazy not to have a tour of it. There's lots to see but my favourite place was Jumeirah beach - absolutely beautiful. If I had 12 hours, I'd spend some time there, then shopping and finally a nice restaurant. Ahh...I'm depressed now - can I come with you? |

why not pay to use 1 of the airlines lounges and you can get something to eat & a shower and they will wake you in times for your flight
join the airlines frequent flyer club (it,s FREE )and you might get discounted price to there lounge plus you will get @ 10kg extra baggage allowance also FREE

People watch! If you do decide to venture out take a beige cab (don't know the company name), the white cabs tend to take the long way if you know what I mean. Shopping is good there too, you can go to Diera City Centre which is a nice mall or go to the soukes (sorry about the spelling) depending on what your timings are. The soukes are little markets that are open until 10 pm or so, you can buy clothing, gold etc... |

well for sure dont stay in the airport, alot of our freinds that come and have to stay waiting for there other plane we take them out for dinner, or hang out at a shisha cafe, so do something like that, cuz 12 hours is alot |

I don't know what kind of money you'll have with you, but check out the website: Dubailandiaeng.pps and you will at least feel like you've already seen what it's like over there. This is a phenominal view of what their money can do. The scenes are sensational. UNBELIEVABLE! |
