A country as a whole, whether Israel or any other country, is often referred to as a "she" in English. It is more stylistically elegant than "it". |

All democratic countries call their nations "she" when referring to their "motherland"
All dictatorial countries refer rather to the "fatherland"
It's an insight into the national mentality. |

My first language is Russian and we refer to all countries as either he or she. We refer to Israel as he because Israel is a male name as it says so in the Bible. I don't know why it's a she in Hebrew, it doesn't make sense. |

I live in the US and we refer to the US as she. In Mexico they also refer to Mexico as she. We refer to them as she as in the motherland I suppose.
Tabatha and her Jewish humor again. She is the kind of Jew that you hear K'vetching and trying to have everyone under control. If you do one little thing she doesn't approve of, she will lock you up.. |

People use the word she to describe boats and countries all the time.
I guess over where you are you never heard it before.
But my first language is french and the countries are either masuclin or femin, and ive been known to call israel and other countries she..
so its just a descriptive word nothing else. |

First time I've heard of it. |

Many languages do not have a neutral gender (no "it") an therefore assign a gender to inanimate objects.
Many people have such languages as their mother tongues.
Simple?
So why is Tabatha pouting again? She has already blocked most good Jews.

I always hear that, and wonder about it myself. People will say "Israel has a right to protect herself", and it doesn't make sense to me.
Edit: the fact that Israel has the right for self-defence does, of course, make sense. :))) It is the "her" part I don't get.
Edit: Ivri's answer makes the most sense. |

....???

The US has always refered to countries as "She" as from motherland, unlike Germany who refers to theirs "He" as the fatherland. |

It could be because Palestine is a she. So it is she VS She not he. |

They refer to America and other countries as a "she" too. Don't worry. |

Lol. I wonder why and it really makes me laugh when I read she referring to Israel. |

I think it just got to do with language like translating from hebrew to english. I speak portuguese and unlike English we have female and male world. Israel would be in my language male. So we refer to Israel as "he"... maybe in hebrew they have the same gramatical rule male/female word but unlike portuguese Israel is considered "female" word... |

Because according to Judaism's law of matrilineal descent, Jewish identity is passed on via the mother only (not the father). So, an Orthodox or Conservative rabbi would not consider you Jewish since your mother is not Jewish.
At the end of the 20th century, the Reform and Reconstructionist movements, partly motivated by the rise in intermarriage and the number of children with a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother, decided the law of matrilineal descent needed to be reevaluated. |

I think because children take after their mothers and it is referred to in the Torah. |

What do you want the Jews to call their country? "Palestine"? Or better yet, do you prefer "Die Vaterland"? |

So you can star the question calling Israel an apartheid state - while at the same time you had the sheer chutzpah to have a go at me, and insult me, and be spiteful to me, because I starred a question in Lebanon???
A question in Lebanon that was not offensive to anyone?
I cannot believe anyone could be that unfair.
I have removed you from my contact list. If you haven't done so already, kindly remove me from yours.

If I'm 'pouting' it's because you're back.
And as for me blocking 'good Jews' - no good person or good Jew would have insulted me the way you did. If you felt anything I said was in error, you were welcome to correct it, of course. But you didn't do that. You instead posted spiteful threads about me - and you feel you are a good Jew???
MALKA - not sure why you felt the need to make such an unprovoked attack on me! If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Oh, and by the way, I'm not any 'kind' of Jew - I'm an individual, as is everyone here. |
